    Homey, caring staff; small bedrooms

I toured this small 8-room, homey facility and was very impressed - unbelievable, caring staff with great communication, 24/7 kitchen staff, cute dog, bright cheery rooms, beautiful backyard and handicap-accessible deck. Residents looked happy and staff seemed knowledgeable about dementia, though it isn't a dementia-specialized facility. Downsides: bedrooms are small and there's a single shared bathroom. My mom would feel at home here, but I'm also touring another place closer to home.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with recurring emphasis on compassionate, knowledgeable staff and a warm, home-like environment. Reviewers repeatedly describe the facility as small and intimate (an eight-room community), bright and cheery, and staffed by people who are attentive and communicative. Multiple comments highlight that residents look happy and well cared for, and one reviewer explicitly credited staff with excellent support during a resident's final days, indicating reliable personal care and comfort at end of life.

Care quality and staff: The reviews consistently praise the staff — they are described as helpful, wonderful, and caring. Communication from staff to families is singled out as excellent, and reviewers note that staff demonstrate specific knowledge about dementia, which suggests clinical awareness even if a formal memory-care unit is not present. The presence of attentive staff and positive reports about final-days care point to a high standard of personalized caregiving and responsiveness to both resident needs and family concerns.

Facilities and environment: The facility is repeatedly characterized as homey and comforting rather than institutional. Positive physical features mentioned include a handicap-accessible deck and a beautiful backyard that likely contribute to a pleasant outdoor space for residents. The presence of a pet (a “cute dog”) is noted as a comforting element that adds to the homelike feel. The small size and homely decor are seen as strengths by many reviewers, contributing to a friendly, community-oriented atmosphere.

Accommodations and layout: Several reviewers point out space limitations — bedrooms are described as small, and there is mention of a single shared bathroom. While some residents have private rooms available (and reviewers appreciated private room options), the layout and limited square footage could pose challenges for residents who require more space or privacy. The small, 8-room capacity is a double-edged theme: it supports individualized attention and a family-like culture, but it also indicates limited capacity and fewer private amenities than larger facilities.

Services, dining, and activities: The operation appears to have on-site kitchen staff available around the clock, which suggests reliable meal preparation and responsiveness to dietary or timing needs. Reviewers also noted activities and bus transportation, indicating programming and outings that support engagement and mobility. These service elements reinforce the sense of a functioning small community where daily needs and social opportunities are provided.

Memory-care considerations and suitability: There is a notable tension in the reviews around dementia services. While staff are described as knowledgeable about dementia, at least one reviewer explicitly stated the facility “lacks dementia facility,” implying there is no formal memory-care unit or secured environment for higher-level memory impairments. That nuance means the community may be appropriate for residents with mild cognitive issues who benefit from trained caregivers in a small home-like setting, but it may be less suitable for people requiring specialized or secure memory-care units.

Patterns and practical considerations: The most consistent patterns are praise for attentive staff, a warm atmosphere, and strong communication. Practical concerns center on physical limitations (small bedrooms, shared bathroom) and limited capacity due to the small size, which could affect couples, people who value en-suite bathrooms, or those needing more space. Location was mentioned indirectly — one reviewer planned to tour another facility closer to home — suggesting that proximity to family may be a deciding factor for some prospective residents.

Conclusion: Port Haven appears to be a small, well-staffed, and compassionate community that offers a homelike environment, good communication, onsite dining staff, activities, and accessible outdoor spaces. It seems especially well suited for families seeking attentive personal care, strong staff-resident relationships, and a cozy, community feel. However, prospective residents and families should weigh space limitations (small bedrooms, shared bathroom), limited overall capacity, and the lack of a dedicated memory-care unit when assessing fit — particularly for individuals with advanced dementia or those who need private en-suite accommodations or a facility closer to family.

    About Port Haven

Port Haven is a licensed senior living community that gives people a place to live with different levels of help, offering something for everyone, whether someone wants independent living with meals, housekeeping, and activities available, or needs assisted living services for bathing, dressing, or medication management, and for those facing memory problems like dementia or Alzheimer's, there's specialized memory care in a secure area with tailored activities, plus bracelets that set off an alarm if anyone tries to leave who shouldn't, so families can know their loved ones are safer. The staff at Port Haven stays on site 24 hours a day, with nurses on staff and a doctor on call, and they handle medications, injections, and special care like diabetic care, behavioral management, and transfers with mechanical lifts if needed, as well as help with toileting and grooming, and they even look after people with incontinence or complex care needs. The building is a single-story ranch-style home with six beds-four semi-private and two private-two bathrooms with grab bars, and wide hallways for wheelchairs, so it's easy to get around, plus there's a big living room with plenty of seats, sunlight, and a big TV, while the activity director plans arts, crafts, and entertainment, whether on site or out in the community. Residents can also use landscaped grounds outside or common areas inside, eat meals served in the dining room, join devotional services, and take part in trips to restaurants or parks nearby, and for people needing short breaks, Port Haven gives respite care, as well as hospice care when it's needed, with help available for planning care and figuring out funding, and there's always someone to talk to when you've got questions or concerns.
