    Severe neglect and unresponsive management

I wanted to like this place - the building, meals, activities and some staff were great and my mother enjoyed parts of it - but overall I'm deeply disappointed. We experienced serious neglect: missed medications, no shower for days, 45+ minute call-button responses, ignored pleas, refused x-ray, forced to walk on an injury, dental issues, bedsores and overall deterioration while management was unresponsive. I cannot recommend this facility.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is mixed and sharply polarized: multiple reviewers praise the facility and staff for dedication, compassion, teamwork, and good day-to-day care, while others report serious neglect and safety concerns. The positive reviews emphasize staff members who prioritize residents, provide above-and-beyond service, and create a supportive, attentive environment. These reviewers also note good meals, engaging activities, adequate living spaces, a convenient location, and overall satisfaction expressed by residents or family members.

Conversely, a subset of reviews describes serious and specific care failures. Reported incidents include ignored pleas for help, refusal to obtain an x‑ray or otherwise address acute medical needs, forcing a resident to walk despite injury, dental-care neglect, development of bed sores, and a general deterioration in resident condition. There are multiple accounts of basic personal-care lapses: one reviewer reported no shower for five days, and another cited missed medications. Long call-button response times (reported as 45+ minutes) and instances of staff being disrespectful or inattentive were also raised as significant concerns.

The pattern suggests variability in care quality. Several reviews explicitly praise teamwork, support among staff, and examples of staff making a meaningful difference in residents' lives; others describe the staff as neglectful or the facility as poorly run. This contrast points to inconsistency — positive experiences coexist with negative ones, which may reflect differences across shifts, units, or changes in staffing or management over time. Some reviewers describe the facility as 'average overall,' while others go so far as to advise avoiding the facility entirely, so perceptions are not uniform.

Dining, activities, and physical facilities receive generally favorable comments from those who are satisfied: meals and activities are called out as positives, and rooms and location are described as adequate or convenient. However, at least one dissatisfied reviewer reported a lack of events and limited engagement, indicating that programming may be uneven. The most serious safety-related themes — missed medications, delayed emergency responses, untreated injuries, and bed sores — warrant particular attention because they can indicate systemic problems that go beyond isolated incidents.

In summary, potential residents and families should approach Sheboygan Senior Community with balanced caution: there are clear reports of compassionate, committed staff and positive resident experiences, but there are also multiple, specific allegations of neglect and unsafe care. Before deciding, it would be prudent to tour the facility, ask about staffing ratios and turnover, review recent inspection or complaint records, inquire about medication administration and bathing schedules, and observe response times to call buttons. Asking for references from current families and checking how management addresses concerns may help evaluate whether the facility's strengths align with your expectations and whether the negative issues identified in some reviews have been addressed.

    About Sheboygan Senior Community

Sheboygan Senior Community, a faith-based nonprofit serving seniors since 1962, offers a range of care options like independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, home care, respite care, and rehabilitation through places such as Maple Creek, Oak Drive, Willow Lane, and the Beach Health Care Center, and they make sure seniors feel at home with private and semiprivate rooms, fireplace living rooms, communal dining, and units with Wi-Fi. The community believes in promoting dignity, safety, and comfort-Paul Treffert leads as CEO, and they've kept that mission since their ruling year of 1964, always accepting seniors for skilled nursing care no matter their financial status. Volunteers, coordinated by Isabel Mueller, help lead activities and events, which makes the atmosphere lively with programs like devotional services, game nights, entertainment, and field trips, and they really try to get every resident involved either with arts in the Artists Gallery, church services, or group outings, aiming to bring meaning and friendship into daily life.

Residents can enjoy fitness and wellness programs including group exercise, access to a gym and hot tub spa, and outside amenities like gardens, hiking paths, and safely enclosed courtyards, which are nice for walking or just getting fresh air, and you can tell they've made spots for gathering and socializing, like the main courtyard and their event-rich recreational rooms. There's real attention to health and safety with staff specially trained in medication management, mobility support, diabetic and incontinence care, plus therapies like physical, occupational, and speech, and they pair these services with physical and mental activities-everything from games to hobbies, movies, spiritual programming, and a packed event calendar. They've made sure to accommodate special diets, and the meals win praise for freshness and flavor, recognized by awards for best dining, activities, and friendliness.

This facility stands out for offering a full continuum of care, from short-term rehab in Hickory Hills, assisted living at Willow Lane, to long-term nursing support, all while focusing on residents' medical, nutritional, spiritual, and social needs, and they use safety systems, monitored security, and help with things like housekeeping and transportation, so daily life is as easy as possible. Sheboygan Senior Community stays active in town, works with the local Chamber Foundation, and produces impact reports to keep the community updated, all while organizing initiatives for workforce, advocacy, and professional growth, keeping the focus on service rather than profits or hype, and when you walk through you can see why people say the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming with longtime staff, unique room names, and good views of one of the state's newer facilities.
