    Clean facility, cautious safety concerns

I'm impressed by the clean, well-kept, apartment-style facility, caring and courteous staff, active programming, and improved management since PRA Living - my family has appreciated the attentive, on-time care. That said, I have serious concerns about safety and compliance after hearing reports of delayed emergency response, improper lift use, gaps in staff certification, payroll/communication problems, and occasional disrespect toward residents. It's a friendly, well-maintained place I'd cautiously recommend only after confirming training, emergency procedures, and transparency.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive with important and specific negative exceptions. The predominant themes among positive reviewers are professionalism, cleanliness, and a home-like, apartment-style environment. Many reviewers highlight large, well-maintained rooms, wide halls and numerous communal spaces that make the facility feel open and welcoming rather than like a clinical nursing home. Recurring praise centers on the caregiving staff — described as friendly, caring, proactive, attentive, and on-task — as well as timely medication and meal delivery. Multiple accounts praise management and note that care quality improved after Prairie Ridge (PRA Living) took over operations, with ongoing healthcare education for staff and a sense of strong teamwork and organization.

Facility amenities receive generally favorable comments: there are daily activities and outings, an exercise area, a chapel, and an on-site hair salon (noted to charge a fee). Many reviewers appreciate the apartment-style layout and common areas that support visitation and socialization. Several accounts describe residents as happy and safe, and recommend the facility as a companionable and more secure alternative to living alone. Some reviewers specifically call out the site as one of the best options in the region and express gratitude for attentive caregivers and supportive office staff.

However, there are significant, specific concerns raised by a minority of reviewers that warrant careful consideration. A set of reviews allege serious safety and compliance problems: policy noncompliance with emergency procedures, delayed emergency responses, and improper use of patient lifts — including claims of staff lacking proper certification. Some comments go further, alleging disrespectful treatment of residents, unequal care, perceived dishonesty, and an unsafe work environment. These reports include strong language (including explicit warnings not to place loved ones at the facility) and are among the most serious issues cited. Reviewers also mention payroll and communication problems affecting staff morale and organization, which could indirectly impact care continuity.

Dining and costs appear as mixed themes. A few reviewers describe the dining as basic or limited, while others compliment the food. The on-site hair salon requires an extra fee, which some may view as an added cost. Multiple reviews call out price as relatively high and indicate pricing can vary by location. Another practical concern raised by multiple reviewers is the lack of central air, which could be an important comfort consideration depending on climate and resident needs.

Patterns across the reviews suggest improvement over time in many operational areas following management changes (PRA Living takeover), with several reviewers explicitly noting improved cleanliness and staff performance. At the same time, the most serious safety and compliance allegations are not isolated to typical customer-service complaints; they touch on emergency response, lift use, and staff certification. Given the mixture of strong positive testimonials and severe negative allegations, prospective families should both acknowledge the facility’s many strengths (cleanliness, apartment style, attentive staff, active programming) and proactively verify corrective actions and current status on safety compliance.

Recommendations for a prospective resident or family: visit the site to assess room size, ventilation (central air), and common areas; ask management for documentation of staff training and lift certification; request information on emergency protocols and recent incident records; inquire about staff-to-resident ratios, payroll/turnover history, and how the facility handles quality improvement; confirm costs and what services (e.g., salon) incur extra fees; and talk to current residents and families about recent experiences. This balanced approach will help confirm whether the generally positive environment cited by many reviewers applies consistently and whether the serious concerns raised by others have been addressed.

    About Prairie Ridge Assisted Living

Prairie Ridge Assisted Living in Waupun, WI is a Community-Based Residential Facility (CBRF) that provides different levels of care so residents can stay as their needs change, and they have a focus on light care, with all residents currently needing only light care, which means most people need help with things like dressing, bathing, or medication but not constant medical attention, and the staff, including nurses available all day and night, helps with daily activities, medication management, and housekeeping, plus there's a 24-hour emergency alert and call system throughout the building, including special buzzers for residents to use when they need help, so nobody needs to worry about being alone in an emergency, and there are secured memory care areas-one in a separate building-for residents who have dementia or tend to wander, which helps keep everyone safe, and the community's equipped for non-ambulatory residents, with wheelchair-accessible showers and one-person transfer assistance, and the facility also manages bowel and bladder care, diabetic care like blood sugar checks and insulin, plus they offer respite care if someone just needs a short stay, or hospice services when it's time for that level of support.

Residents have a lot of places to gather and socialize, like several common rooms, a community lounge, an arts room for crafts or hobbies, and a dining room with all-day meals, even special options for those needing vegetarian, diabetic, allergy-friendly, or other diets, and meals are served in the dining room, but there's also room service arrangements, and every resident's room comes furnished with a telephone for easy communication and wheelchair access for comfort, and laundry and housekeeping services are included, which makes daily life easier, and there are recreational amenities like a well-stocked library, garden with walking paths, and organized activities, both community-sponsored and resident-run, so there's always something to do, and the staff helps arrange move-in and transportation for new residents, and residents can go on group excursions or use the complimentary transportation around town, or pay a small fee for extra rides, plus there are parking spots for residents who drive.

There's a beauty salon and barber shop right at Prairie Ridge, along with services for haircuts, and they hold movie nights, offsite outings, and devotional services in the onsite chapel so people can connect with their faith, and pets like dogs and cats are allowed, which can be important for some folks who want that companionship, but there's no smoking in any indoor area, whether it's the rooms or common spaces, and the building's handicap-accessible throughout. They have unique rooms and names for their gathering places, and they offer counseling and therapy for those who want more personal support, with staff who're known for being friendly, helpful, and on-task, creating a setting where residents can feel comfortable and respected as they age in place, and with different care types and specialized support, the facility's designed to meet the changing needs of seniors in a practical way.
