    Spotless facility, excellent care, caveat

I moved my dad here and have been very happy: the facility is spotless and beautiful, public areas and rooms are well cleaned and smell fresh, meals are excellent, and there are many activities, pools, exercise rooms and common areas. The staff are outstanding-friendly, genuine, responsive and truly involved in care, they set up a care plan with doctor/nurse/social worker, kept our family informed, and even facilitated a quick move. Dad feels at home and I would recommend it to family and friends. One caveat: the memory-care unit seemed depressing, had odor issues and a waiting list, and the community can feel quite religious (may not suit everyone).

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with repeated praise for staff, cleanliness, food, activities, and the quality of accommodations. Reviewers consistently describe staff as responsive, kind, genuine, and engaged; many notes emphasize that caregivers are friendly and make residents feel at home. Families report good communication and that staff keep them well informed. Several reviews highlight that move-ins are facilitated quickly and smoothly, and that there is a formal care plan involving a doctor, nurse, and social worker — indicating an organized, multidisciplinary approach to resident care.

Facility maintenance and common areas receive high marks: reviewers mention excellent cleaning of public areas, clean resident rooms, pleasant smells, and attractive interior spaces. Amenities such as multiple common areas, an exercise room, and a pool are repeatedly cited, as are frequent activities. Dining is another consistent positive—meals are described as good to excellent. Skilled nursing units are explicitly liked by some families, and the overall impression of the physical plant is that it is outstanding and resident-focused.

The staff culture is a standout theme. Beyond being competent caregivers, staff are portrayed as personable and engaged with residents—examples include playful pranks and staff who appear to enjoy their work. Multiple reviewers say their relative feels cared for and at home, and several explicitly state they would recommend the community to family and friends. The community is described as welcoming and supportive, with attention to continued care and resident wellbeing.

However, there are notable and recurring concerns that temper the otherwise strong endorsements. The memory care unit draws mixed to negative comments: some reviewers find that unit depressing, some report unpleasant odors, and it is mentioned that there is a waiting list for memory care placement. These points suggest variability in experience between units or that the memory care area may need attention or renovation and capacity expansion. Another consistent theme is the facility's religious character — almost daily mass and rosary are mentioned and viewed positively by some residents, but several reviewers say the Catholic/religious emphasis may be too strong for others or explicitly say they do not want a Catholic facility. This makes religious orientation a key factor to consider depending on a prospective resident's preferences.

Other lesser but relevant issues include concerns about affordability (some reviewers note that cost is a consideration, though options may exist) and that the facility's large size may not suit everyone. Demographically, many residents are in their 80s, which may influence the social environment and activity mix. In summary, St. Camillus receives very high marks for staffing, cleanliness, amenities, dining, and overall management of assisted living and skilled nursing, producing strong family endorsements. Prospective residents and families should, however, ask specific questions about memory care conditions and wait times, confirm how the campus's Catholic identity is integrated into daily life, and verify cost and unit availability to ensure the community matches their preferences and needs.

St Camillus sits in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and serves older adults who want choices for how they live as they age, offering everything from independent living apartments in the East and West Residences where people stay active and social, to Assisted Living and Memory Care in the South and North Residences for residents needing more help, and in the South Residence there's also a 70-bed Medicare- and Medicaid-certified Health Center for those who need skilled nursing or short-term rehab, and there's home health services, too, if someone wants care in their own home, so people can pretty much stay here even as their needs change. Here, folks can get meals prepared with good, nutritious ingredients, and there's help with bathing, dressing, hygiene, getting around, and managing medicines if needed, with diabetic support and incontinence care available, and if someone is living with Alzheimer's or dementia, the North Residence offers activities and therapies that try to keep everyone engaged and safe. Staff stay awake and on duty 24 hours a day, and there's a call system that always works in case someone needs assistance in the middle of the night, and for people needing help moving, they've got lifts and people trained to do one- and two-person transfers from bed to wheelchair.

St Camillus sees to spiritual needs, too, with daily Catholic Mass, weekly ecumenical services, and three chapels right on campus, and they have a Pastoral Care team, so if someone wants support or just to talk, there's always someone available. Residents get meals in an elegant dining room or lounges, and there's a coffee shop, bank branch, woodworking shop, salon, country store, game and card rooms, billiards, garden areas for outdoor walks or gardening, and lots of places to just visit with neighbors, plus a library, spa, fitness room-even a business room if someone needs it-which suits folks who like to keep busy or pick up something new. There's complimentary transportation for getting to appointments or activities, and guest apartments for when family visits. If someone has a small dog, they can bring them along, which brings comfort to many.

They run lots of activities including movie nights, music, arts and crafts, and events both on and off-site, offering chances to stay social and connected, and their Life Enrichment program aims for physical, intellectual, spiritual, social, and emotional health, so people don't get bored or feel left out. The St Camillus staff will provide hospice care if it becomes necessary, and they also have respite stays for short-term needs. Residents can pick from studio, semi-private, or two-bedroom rooms, and the community takes private pay, veteran's benefits, social security, and commercial insurance, though there are some extra costs for higher care levels, second residents, and community or respite fees. St Camillus has run for over 100 years as a non-profit, aiming to offer stability and security in one place, and has a solid history of caring for seniors with needs that change over time.
