    Upscale, spotless community; high-end care

I toured this beautiful, well-maintained, upscale community and was impressed - spotless rooms, lovely grounds, Frank-Lloyd-Wright feel, and high-end finishes. The staff are outstanding, attentive and friendly, and the caregiver ratios and service gave me real peace of mind. Dining is restaurant-quality with lots of variety and special events, and there are many activities, gyms, pool, outings and small restaurants on site (though the pool/exercise rooms seemed underused). It felt a bit club-like and impersonal at times - not very warm or homey - and the buy-in/high fees make it unaffordable for many. Overall I'd recommend it if you want top-of-the-line care and can afford the cost, but it's not the right fit if you want a cozy, small-scale community.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews portray The Garlands of Barrington as a high-end, well-maintained senior living community with many standout strengths. Reviewers repeatedly highlight the beauty of the campus, including gardens and notable Frank Lloyd Wright–inspired architecture, and describe the facility as upscale, clean, and club-like. Staff receive consistent praise for being friendly, skilled, attentive and often going above and beyond. Many families reported improved moods and wellbeing for their loved ones after moving in, and several reviewers explicitly recommended the community.

Care quality and staffing: Care is frequently described as superb, with outstanding caregiver ratios and staff who are kind, patient, and skilled. Multiple reviews emphasize smooth, confidential transitions from independent living to assisted living and skilled nursing, which is a meaningful advantage for families seeking a true continuum of care. That said, there are a few comments expressing concern about care for residents with complex medical needs; while many praise the care, a minority believe the community is better suited to relatively healthy, active seniors than those needing more intensive medical management.

Dining and culinary experience: Dining is one of the most consistently praised aspects. The community offers multiple intimate restaurants (reviews mention four dining venues and a grill), a creative executive chef (Chef Nick is specifically named), gourmet and restaurant-quality meals, and opportunities for both fine-dining and casual cuisine. The on-site restaurant being open to the public also stands out as a community-facing amenity. While most reviewers love the food and variety — some even single out desserts and vegetables — a few commenters described the food as merely average, indicating occasional variability in culinary experiences.

Facilities and amenities: Amenities are extensive: fitness center, pool, pickleball, craft rooms, large social spaces, well-maintained grounds, and thoughtful architecture. The community is described as having a homelike feel while also offering upscale touches, like special events, symphony outings, tea service, and robust social programming. Apartments are generally reported as large and well-made, with some units offering patios. Housekeeping/maid service and routine maintenance are appreciated. A few reviewers noted underutilized facilities such as the pool and exercise rooms, and some found certain neighborhoods within the community (e.g., Prairieview) to have smaller apartments.

Activities and community life: Reviewers emphasize a lively schedule of activities — card games, movies, hand massages, outings, arts and music events, and short trips. The community attracts a friendly, interesting mix of residents from across the United States. Families report the campus is child-friendly and that grandchildren enjoy visiting. Many reviewers felt a strong sense of community and neighborhood, with opportunities for dining together and social interaction.

Management, culture, and drawbacks: Cost is the most frequently cited downside. Entrance fees and ongoing costs are repeatedly described as very high or even unaffordable to some, although several reviewers feel the cost is justified by the level of service and amenities. The buy-in model with a 90% refundable fee and rental options are noted as important financial details. Criticisms of management center on perceptions of a profit-driven or impersonal administrative approach; some residents/families felt the community could lack warmth and individualized attention despite its many offerings. A few reviewers said the facility felt too big or club-like for their tastes.

Safety and policies: Most comments about cleanliness and safety are positive. However, there is at least one report concerning COVID-positive staff and a policy issue about paying positive-tested staff that reviewers flagged as problematic — management was aware of the situation. This introduces a cautionary note about infection control policy transparency and consistency for prospective residents and families to discuss during tours.

Who it fits best and final observations: The Garlands of Barrington consistently appears as a top-tier, resort-like retirement community that excels in cuisine, staffing, facilities, and a full continuum of care. It will likely appeal most to affluent seniors seeking luxury, social opportunities, excellent dining, a beautifully designed campus, and a place that can provide higher levels of care over time. Families seeking extensive amenities, a strong social program, and an upscale environment report high satisfaction and peace of mind. Prospective residents who prioritize intimate, small-community warmth, or who require complex ongoing medical care, should probe care protocols and staffing for medical needs and consider whether the community’s size and pace match their preferences. Cost and administrative culture are the main decision points: the community commands premium pricing and some perceive an administrative emphasis on revenues, so thoroughly reviewing contracts, refund terms (the cited 90% refundable fee), and policies (including infection control and staff testing/pay) during the visit is advisable.

    About The Garlands of Barrington

The Garlands of Barrington is a community for people aged 55 and older that provides a range of living options like independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and home care, so older adults can move between care levels without leaving their home if needs change, and that's one thing that gives a lot of peace of mind to families. You'll find a large campus with apartment homes, villas, and penthouses that come with open layouts, tall ceilings, big windows for lots of light, granite and quality finishes, and plenty of storage, and the buildings look nice and well-cared for. The kitchens have lots of cabinet space and good appliances, so you can cook if you want. There's a selection of floor plans to suit different needs, and homes are often ready for move-in with picture-perfect interiors, but sometimes the best layouts don't stay available for long.

The campus has a resort-like feel, with amenities that include a swimming pool, a hot tub, an art studio, an enclosed memory care patio for safer time outside, walking paths, gardens, and raised garden beds, and the community's got a performing arts center, a surround-sound theater, a coffee shop, a general store, and lots of common areas where residents can meet up, read, or have coffee with guests. Communal dining with well-prepared, healthy meals is offered daily, and there's room service and guest meals, which makes it easy for families to visit, and there's pet-friendly policies in place for people who want to have their small animals close by. Handicap accessibility and Wi-Fi/high-speed internet are standard, as are private and shared guest suites.

You can take part in programs like yoga, Tai Chi, FitSprings classes-where yoga and Pilates get mixed for a low-impact exercise-and stretching, while the wellness center puts on classes that actually won an International Council on Active Aging "Innovator Award." The place is licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health for assisted living, and there's always staff on site, including a nurse and care team who've built a reputation for being helpful, careful, and kind. Health services cover medication reminders, hospice, psychiatric support, pharmacy deliveries, and a full range of therapies including occupational, physical, and rehabilitation work, when needed.

Residents with memory loss or dementia get custom support, like structured housing, therapies, an enclosed patio for safe outdoor time, and activities with extra help. Assisted living covers help with bathing, dressing, medication, and others, and the facility's got skilled nursing and respite care so families can get a break if a loved one only needs short-term stays. There's safety in mind with gated access and plenty of staff nearby, alongside personal care.

Daily life brings a wide range of activities like games, crafts, music, literary programs, outings, field trips, men's groups, art appreciation, equestrian therapy, pet therapy, education, and volunteer options, so there's nearly always something to do if you want to join in, and programs get tailored to abilities and interests. Transportation is available for people who need a ride to appointments or out for events, and there's parking for visitors. The property keeps a private art collection, which gives the place a unique touch, and you'll find the atmosphere feels neighborly because many people stay there for many years, and that kind of community spirit doesn't happen everywhere.

The Garlands of Barrington holds several awards for design and services, but what many folks notice first is the friendly, joyful staff, the quality of food, and how it's less about flash and more about steady, reliable care and attention for older adults in every stage of aging.
