    Bright, amenity-rich campus; costly deposit

I toured this large, riverfront continuing-care community and was impressed by the brand-new feel, remodeled bright rooms (the two-bedroom was phenomenal, step-in showers) and beautiful landscaping, gardens and walking areas. The campus is packed with amenities - pool/gym/therapy, woodworking shop, snack areas, restaurant-style dining and outings - and the staff were friendly, caring and informative (Ray explained everything well). It seems great for quality of life and for those with limited mobility thanks to multiple care levels, but it's expensive with a large deposit and potential price increases.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive. Reviewers consistently highlight a welcoming, professional and informative admissions/sales experience — several comments single out staff by name and describe tours as fantastic and comprehensive. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, committed and familiar with residents, contributing to an observable sense of resident satisfaction. Multiple reviews explicitly say residents know the staff and seem happy, and the community is characterized as caring and engaged.

Care and community model is a clear strength: Covenant Living at the Holmstad is described as a continuing care community (CCRC) offering multiple levels of care, including a "catered care" option between independent and assisted living. Several reviewers noted the community's financial stability and comprehensive services, which supports confidence in long-term care availability. At least one reviewer did mention that the community "was not suitable for my mother at this time," indicating that while the CCRC model is robust, individual care needs and timing still matter.

Facilities and amenities receive frequent praise. The campus is described as large, well-maintained and beautifully landscaped with gardens, trees, walking areas, benches and riverfront surroundings. Interior updates and remodeled rooms give many units a brand-new feel; specific comments call out bright rooms and an impressive two-bedroom unit. Amenity highlights include a pool, gym, physical therapy/workouts, a woodworking shop and snack/gathering areas. Reviewers also mention convenient outing opportunities (shopping and trips) and an active social calendar. For residents with limited mobility but who need only modest assistance, the environment is repeatedly described as suitable and supportive.

Dining is another commonly praised area: reviewers refer to dining rooms that function both restaurant-style and buffet-style and comment that the food is good. Yet there is a contrasting note in one review that states "no meals," suggesting differences in what is included in various contract plans or that a particular reviewer expected meals to be included when they were not. Prospective residents should confirm dining inclusions for the specific living plan they are considering.

Cost and contract terms are the most frequently raised concerns. Several reviewers describe the community as expensive, cite a large upfront deposit, and call out the potential for price increases over time. These financial considerations are important trade-offs given the high level of amenities and the continuing care model. Another practical detail noted by more than one reviewer is unit bathroom configuration: rooms tend to have step-in showers rather than tubs, which may be a positive for accessibility but a downside for those who prefer bathtubs.

In summary, Covenant Living at the Holmstad is portrayed as a high-quality, well-staffed, full-service continuing care community with extensive amenities, attractive grounds and a strong emphasis on resident life and activities. Its strengths are knowledgeable and friendly staff, a wide range of facilities (fitness, therapy, hobby spaces, pool), good dining options, and the security of multiple care levels and financial stability. The main drawbacks center on cost and contract terms (large deposits and potential rate increases), some variability in what is included (meals), unit features like no tubs in some apartments, and the possibility that the size or care model may not match every individual's immediate needs. Prospective residents and families should weigh the lifestyle and security benefits against the financial commitment and confirm specific inclusions and care capabilities for their situation.

About Covenant Living at the Holmstad

Covenant Living at the Holmstad sits on 38 wooded acres in the Fox River Valley, with many trees, walking paths, and outdoor seating where folks can visit, relax, or watch the seasons change. The campus has a chapel, scenic water features, patios, a community garden, and plenty of peaceful spots for spending time outside, and people often enjoy the walking and hiking trails. The community offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing, all within the same place, so residents can stay as their needs change, and there's a waitlist if you want one of the independent living homes. The living options include studios, one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms, duplexes, and each unit gives you closet space, a living room, kitchen appliances, climate controls, washer/dryer, WiFi, and cable TV, and the pet policy allows pets in independent living.

The Michaelsen Health Care Center offers palliative, in-home health, hospice, and skilled nursing care, and the healthcare team includes full-time nursing staff available day and night, plus trained experts for medication management, injections, wound care, chronic illness, cardiac support, and more, with physical, occupational, and speech therapy on site, along with support for memory care and post-stroke recovery. Folks can get help with bathing and incontinence, and short-term respite stays exist but may pause if there's high occupancy. There's a dietician, podiatry services, and dietary management available, too, and staff speak English and Spanish. The pharmacy is on site, with medication reminders and management, and there are references and background checks for all staff, who get ongoing training.

Dining fits whatever level of care you're in, with options like a coffee shop, casual and fine dining, a demonstration kitchen, and outdoor seating. Residents can enjoy chef-prepared meals, flexible meal plans, room service, and takeout, and there's a Bistro 700 and communal dining rooms for sharing meals with friends or family, plus menus for allergies or special diets. The activities calendar covers fitness classes like Tai Chi, yoga, and aquatic programs, trips with the community transportation service, games, creative arts, music, movie nights in the theater, support groups, and even an annual bazaar. There's a fitness center, pool, hot tub spa, creative arts center, library, general store, beauty salon, and event spaces for sports, crafts, spiritual gatherings, and lawn games, with religious services, chaplain staff, Catholic services, and counseling for those who want it.

Maintenance, housekeeping, laundry, groundskeeping, pest control, and plant care get handled by staff, and there's a secure campus with emergency response, alert systems, security guards, controlled access, and wheelchair-accessible transportation, plus safety checks and support for ambulatory needs. Residents get help moving in and arranging their space, can park in lots or garages, and take part in programs from the LifeConnect wellness center focused on staying healthy, active, and connected. The campus is not-for-profit and faith-based and holds a state license, providing a full continuum of care so many can age in place for as long as possible. People find a lively community here, with familiar faces and lots to do, and there are several entrance fee choices, some refundable, depending on what suits your situation. The community is busy, with a long list of folks waiting for independent living, and takes pride in keeping clear and timely communication with families, and in having residents' needs and complaints handled quickly by the right staff depending on the level of care needed.
