    Warm community, great food, cautious

I live at Concordia and overall I'd give it 5 stars - beautiful, well-maintained grounds, excellent facilities (movie theater, pool, salon, patio homes), delicious chef-prepared meals with lots of choices, and a lively calendar of exercise classes, clubs, trips and volunteer opportunities that kept me active and social. The staff are in large part caring, attentive and helpful; maintenance is quick, apartment living is convenient, and having on-site assisted living gives peace of mind. I've made new friends, tried new activities, and appreciate the cleanliness and generous services like biweekly apartment cleaning and dining delivery. That said, I've witnessed troubling problems - high staff turnover, occasional neglect, delayed assistance, falls and UTIs, lost laundry/gifts, restricted communication/locked areas, and some unresponsive or overworked employees - plus small assisted-living rooms and high cost. Management and HR have had lapses at times; staff clearly deserve better pay and support. Despite the issues, for me the warm community, excellent food and active lifestyle make Concordia a strongly recommendable choice, but go in informed and vigilant.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Concordia Village are predominantly positive, with a strong majority of residents and families praising the staff, amenities, social atmosphere, cleanliness, and range of activities. Many reviewers describe the community as warm, homey and well-run; words and phrases repeated across reviews include "friendly/helpful/caring staff," "excellent food," "gorgeous facility," and "active lifestyle." Residents frequently cite the campus’ ability to provide multiple levels of care (independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care) as a major benefit that supports aging in place and provides peace of mind for families.

Care quality and staff: A clear strength is the staff and management in many reviewers' experiences. Numerous comments highlight staff responsiveness, management that listens and acts quickly on concerns, and employees who go above and beyond (including during the pandemic). Multiple reviewers specifically praised nurses, therapists, dining staff and the assistant manager for helping new residents settle in. That said, a recurring negative pattern is staff turnover and inconsistency: several reviews report frequent personnel changes, phone communication problems, and a small but important number of accounts alleging neglect (falls, UTIs), delayed assistance, or poor treatment. There are also more serious HR/management complaints from some former employees or residents' perspectives—allegations of wrongful terminations, unprofessional HR behavior, and claims that staff are overworked and underpaid. In short, while most residents describe caring, attentive staff, there are meaningful reports of variability and isolated serious concerns that prospective residents should probe further.

Facilities and maintenance: Concordia Village is repeatedly described as very attractive and well maintained. Positive themes include immaculate grounds, beautiful landscaping, comfortable public rooms, fountains, and a generally "first-class" or "cruise-ship" vibe. Amenities mentioned often are a saltwater pool, movie theater, beauty salon, wood shop, art room, library, multiple activity rooms, and accessible garden spaces. Maintenance response times are praised in many reviews and regular housekeeping (including biweekly apartment cleaning) is a plus. Some negatives touch on the built environment: a few reviews call assisted-living rooms small and missing basic kitchen appliances (stove/fridge), and a couple of reviewers noted an unpleasant smell in a dining area. Accessibility and security policies—such as the main door being locked after 8pm and specific pool lifeguard policies—were also noted as potential inconveniences.

Dining and food service: Dining is consistently a major positive: chef-prepared meals, varied menus, plentiful choices, and attractive dining rooms receive many compliments. Several reviewers mention that servers are accommodating, and that dietary requests are handled. Conversely, a minority of residents reported that meal service was cut back in some periods and that not every individual liked the chef's menu choices. A couple of reviews noted an unpleasant dining-room odor at times, but the preponderance of comments praise the food and dining experience.

Activities, wellness and social life: One of Concordia’s strongest selling points is its robust activities program. Reviewers frequently mention exercise and balance classes, multiple daily activity times, movie nights, card games and bridge, concerts, art classes, volunteering opportunities, Bible classes and church services, planned trips, and special-event programming. The pool aquatic program, social events, and a welcoming dining culture help many residents build new friendships and reduce loneliness. A few residents described limited activities (sometimes related to pandemic restrictions), but overall the activity/engagement offerings are a consistently positive theme.

Value, cost and policies: Price is a repeated concern—several reviewers characterize Concordia as expensive or over budget. At least one reviewer reported net cost savings relative to their prior center (~$15K/year), and others called the value good given the amenities and care options. Some house rules and policies (locked main door after 8pm, pool lifeguard hours) were flagged as inconveniences. Families should clarify pricing structure, what is included (apartment appliances vary by unit), and any extra fees for services or guest stays.

Patterns and recommendations for prospects: The dominant pattern is a highly positive residential experience driven by strong amenities, plentiful activities, appealing dining, and largely attentive staff. However, there is a consistent minority of reviews describing staffing instability, occasional lapses in personal care, administrative or HR problems, and a few troubling reports (lost items, communication restrictions, and medical incidents). Prospective residents and families should visit multiple times (including evenings and weekends), ask detailed questions about staffing ratios and turnover, review incident reporting and response protocols, verify what appliances and features a specific unit includes, and discuss after-hours entry and pool policies. Also ask about current activity levels post-pandemic, recent changes to meal service, and any documented corrective actions the community has taken in response to past concerns.

Bottom line: Concordia Village scores highly on facilities, dining, activities and the social environment, and many residents and families describe it as a welcoming, well-run community with quality care options and strong resident engagement. Nevertheless, variability in staffing and isolated but significant reports of care or administrative problems mean that an individualized assessment (unit inspection, staff interviews, and review of care policies) is important before committing. For many people the campus offers an excellent, active lifestyle with comfortable amenities and continuity of care; for others, concerns about cost, staffing stability, or specific care needs may necessitate careful due diligence.

    About EverTrue Concordia Village

EverTrue Concordia Village sits within a campus in Springfield, Illinois, where older adults can find nearly every level of support they might need as they age, starting with independent living for those who want their own apartment but less upkeep and moving through assisted living that gives help with things like bathing, meals, and medication when daily chores become harder, and then onto memory care that provides support and structure for people living with Alzheimer's or dementia, complete with special activities and round-the-clock staff, and then on to skilled nursing care, where residents get daily help from nurses, wound care, and other medical support for both short stints and longer stays. The community also offers board and care homes, which means smaller, homelike spaces where a limited number of residents can get more personal attention each day, and there are HUD and LIHTC apartments onsite for those living on limited, fixed incomes, with these apartments located in the wider metropolitan St. Louis area. EverTrue Concordia Village believes living should be active and meaningful, so there are plenty of social groups, events, and activities-things like entertainment, knowledge-sharing, spiritual programs, pet therapy, and even beautification or landscaping to help people get involved-plus dining help, transportation, and support with things as small as using a wheelchair or as simple as library visits. EverTrue Concordia Village is faith-centered, run by a nonprofit that traces its work back 165 years, with a mission to help seniors live as fully as possible, wherever they call home, and they're also part of LeadingAge Illinois, which gives staff more training and connects the community with up-to-date resources-like downloadable guides and professional meetings-so both residents and staff can stay informed. All buildings are smoke-free, and the community offers a warm, welcoming place where seniors can keep their independence while knowing more help is always nearby if they need it, whether it's home health care, hospice, or just a little bit of encouragement to join something new, and the REACH Short Stay Rehab program offers support for those who want to recover before heading home. The facility is open to people needing a lot of different services and has a community spirit that seems to include everyone, whether they're interested in activities, need care, or just want a sense of belonging as they grow older.
