    Welcoming staff and good meals

I moved my loved one here and I'm impressed by the beautiful, clean campus and welcoming, professional staff who genuinely treat residents like family. Meals are good (dietitian-driven, three meals plus a bistro), there are plenty of activities, outings and rehab/therapy options, and apartments are comfortable if a bit small. Nursing and medication management have generally been attentive and proactive, and the community feels safe and home-like. That said, I've heard a few serious complaints from others (billing/staffing issues, rare medication or care lapses and occasional unprofessional behavior), so it's worth touring and asking specific questions to make sure it's the right fit.

    Summary review

Overall impression: The reviews for Hubbard Hill - Living Wisdom Community present a predominantly positive picture of a well-appointed, activity-rich senior living campus with many visitors and residents praising the staff, amenities, and dining. A substantial number of reviewers describe a warm, family-like environment with professional and caring staff, strong rehabilitation services, attractive grounds, and high-quality meals planned by certified dietitians using local produce. However, these positives are counterbalanced by several serious, recurring concerns raised by other reviewers. The result is a mixed but nuanced portrait: many families are very satisfied, while a smaller but significant set of reviewers report troubling incidents and administrative issues that warrant careful attention by prospective residents and families.

Care quality and staff: Numerous reviews highlight attentive, friendly, and professional caregiving and nursing staff. Several accounts specifically praise round-the-clock nurse supervision, a robust rehab program, helpful physical therapy facilities, and staff who make proactive medication notifications. Memory care and Alzheimer’s accommodations receive positive mentions for home-like layouts, private bathrooms, and staff knowledgeable about dementia care. Conversely, other reviewers report inconsistent care quality across units or shifts. Serious complaints include medication errors (one reported 4x dosage), overmedication, hygiene neglect, poor nutrition for some residents, and instances where staffing levels appeared insufficient. There are also reports of unprofessional or unkind individual staff members and allegations of racial discrimination. These contradictions suggest variability in staff performance and/or oversight that results in markedly different experiences depending on the unit, shift, or specific staff on duty.

Facilities, amenities, dining, and activities: The campus features and services receive strong, repeated praise. Reviewers mention well-maintained landscaping, courtyards, an outdoor amphitheater, aviaries, a pond with ducks and geese, gardens, library and computer access, and communal spaces that encourage social engagement. Dining is frequently described as high-quality: certified dietitians, meals made from scratch, fresh vegetables from local markets, multiple meal venues (formal dining room with tablecloths and menu service, bistro), and cooking demonstrations. Recreational programming is robust, with scheduled activities, musicians, field trips, resident-led events, and occasional outside entertainment; some accounts describe the community as creative and resident-driven. Independent living options such as villas and private apartments are appreciated by families seeking varied levels of care on one campus. At the same time, a few reviewers note that apartments can be small and that the facility’s size can make it feel busy; some felt apartments were not as nice as the common areas.

Management, billing, and operational concerns: Several reviews identify administrative and management problems that are not trivial. Reported issues include perceived misrepresentation of staffing ratios, overbooking that led to inappropriate placement of residents, delayed initiation of services (such as physical therapy), lack of aftercare/home PT following discharge, and inconsistent post-discharge billing practices. Financial complaints include a reported 38% cost increase and a disputed $1,800 security deposit charge billed after a resident had left. These kinds of administrative and billing problems contributed to some families’ negative experiences and eroded trust even when clinical care in other cases was viewed positively.

Patterns, risk factors, and practical advice: The pattern in these reviews is one of sizable overall strengths (amenities, food, many caring/proficient staff, strong rehab services, and an engaging campus) combined with uneven execution in other areas (staffing consistency, medication safety, hygiene, aftercare coordination, and billing transparency). That mix means Hubbard Hill can be an excellent match for many residents, particularly those who value a strong activities program, good dining, and on-site rehab services. However, families should be cautious and perform targeted due diligence before committing. Recommended actions for prospective residents and families include: touring multiple care areas (assisted living, memory care, rehab), asking for current staffing ratios and turnover metrics, inquiring about medication error prevention protocols and recent incident reports, verifying policies on fees/fee increases and security deposits in writing, asking how transitions of care and home health/aftercare are handled, checking state inspection records and recent surveys, and speaking with current residents’ families about their experiences. Observing mealtime, cleanliness, staff-resident interactions, and staff responsiveness during a visit can help reveal whether the positive aspects cited by many reviewers are consistent on the day of your visit.

Bottom line: Reviews indicate Hubbard Hill offers many hallmarks of a high-quality senior community—beautiful grounds, strong rehab services, good food, and many caring staff members—but there are credible and serious complaints about inconsistent care, medication safety, administrative transparency, and occasional unprofessional behavior. Prospective families should weigh the many positive reports against the severe negative reports, confirm policies and quality metrics in person, and seek direct references to determine whether Hubbard Hill is the right fit for their loved one’s needs.

About Hubbard Hill - Living Wisdom Community

Hubbard Hill - Living Wisdom Community sits on a quiet, wooded campus in Elkhart, Indiana, with much of the property looked after by a master gardener, and it covers about 54 to 70 acres depending where you walk, so there's plenty of space to move around and see flowers and tall trees. This community, which folks used to call Hubbard Hill Estates Retirement Community, has provided care since 1977 and does so as a faith-based, not-for-profit place, which some people like because they feel it's more personal and less about money. It's run by Mr. Patrick E. Pingel as the executive director and has earned an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

The environment is meant to feel both peaceful and lively, with a big focus on mental and emotional health, and if you walk around you'll find apartments and different kinds of living services, so people can get independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and continuing care all in the same campus, and the whole place is open 24 hours a day so help is always nearby. The Living Wisdom Center offers a new kind of memory care, which comes with skilled nursing and special programs for people living with Alzheimer's or dementia, and they've got therapists on hand for physical, occupational, and speech therapy. There's also palliative care, short-term rehabilitation, and nutritional support, so many types of needs are covered.

Hubbard Hill puts a lot of value on community connections, even running what's called the Early Learning Center, which brings younger folks and kids together with the seniors for intergenerational programs that keep things spirited. Seniors can spend time at the Sailor Community Center, join in on social and recreational activities, and there are educational events and community links that keep everyone involved. A big wellness facility has fitness equipment like nautilus machines, and apartments come with five-star touches, up-to-date amenities, and even high-speed internet and "Skype" on a flat screen TV so folks can keep in touch with family.

The whole campus was recently renovated, so most of the spaces look fresh and modern. There's a gourmet bistro open for breakfast and lunch, floral arrangements spread throughout, and staff always ready to help, including a skilled medical director and licensed nurses. Services like work order requests and clear move-in instructions are there to make things smoother. The foundation makes sure to keep things faith-based and compassionate, focusing on a wise and supportive community, and the staff aims to make care as personal as possible. Being in a lively neighborhood, residents also have nearby services and recreational options for when they want to venture out. The campus has won awards for its approach, and it keeps adapting to meet the needs of people at different stages of aging, so many residents stay as their needs change.
