    Warm caring staff, excellent amenities

I live at Marquette and have been very pleased - the staff are warm, long-tenured and genuinely caring, and the campus is beautiful and well maintained. Amenities are excellent: indoor pool, robust fitness/therapy programs, many activities and three dining options, plus smooth transitions across independent, assisted and skilled care. Nursing and rehab teams have been exceptional and responsive; residents are happy and engaged. It's on the pricey side and you may see occasional service hiccups or inconsistent dining, but overall it's a welcoming, high-quality community I'd recommend.

    Summary review

Overall impression: The reviews paint Marquette as a large, well-resourced, and highly amenitized continuing care retirement community (CCRC) with a strong overall positive sentiment from a majority of residents and families. Praise clusters strongly around the campus aesthetics, breadth of amenities, robust fitness and aquatic offerings, and the presence of a full continuum of care on one campus. Many reviewers emphasize a resort-like, country-club atmosphere combined with the security of on-site healthcare services and skilled rehabilitation. The facility’s nonprofit status and reported reinvestment of funds into services and benevolent assistance also contribute to a perception of mission-driven care.

Facilities and amenities: Multiple reviewers consistently highlight the beautiful grounds, spacious apartments and cottages, and the variety of on-site conveniences — bank, salon/barber, shop, tavern, covered and underground parking, and strong transportation options. The fitness center (MAC), indoor pool, hot tub, and certified instructors receive frequent positive mention. The campus’s physical plant and renovated rooms and common areas are often described as modern and well maintained. Dining options are a major plus in many reviews: reviewers mention multiple dining venues, restaurant-style service, a dedicated chef, room service, and special Legacy dining for occasions. Activities programming is robust and diverse — lectures, live music, classes, outings, spiritual services, and many volunteer opportunities — contributing to an active social environment.

Care quality and staff: A recurring theme is the presence of long-tenured, experienced, and compassionate staff, especially in nursing, CNAs, and therapy teams. Numerous accounts recount excellent rehab outcomes, attentive nursing care, and emotionally supportive interactions during end-of-life situations. Staff who know residents by name, engage warmly, and go above and beyond are cited frequently. At the same time, the reviews reveal variability: while many describe responsive, proactive management and helpful maintenance, others report slow responses or unanswered maintenance requests. Communication strengths are often balanced by occasional complaints about staff appearing rushed, rude, or disengaged.

Critical concerns and variability: Although the majority of comments are favorable, there are notable pockets of serious concern that introduce variability to the overall picture. A few reviews allege neglect in memory care — including reports of residents being left in urine and insufficient nurse presence — and accusations of aggressive medication practices by QMAs. Some reviewers state the assisted-living level did not meet expectations and reported hospitalizations for issues such as dehydration, along with pressure to pay for higher care levels without demonstrable benefit. These serious allegations, while not pervasive across all reviews, suggest inconsistencies in care quality between units or shifts and indicate the importance of verifying staffing ratios, oversight, and specific memory-care practices before choosing this community.

Culture, management, and staffing dynamics: Multiple reviewers praise the leadership, describing resident-centered management, smooth transitions between care levels, and strong therapy/rehab coordination. Contrasting reports describe internal problems in certain departments (dietary/back office) with allegations of bullying, retaliation, and staff turnover. There are also mixed reports about administrative communication — some families report quick, proactive problem resolution while others note marketing/robo-call frustrations and difficulty reaching certain contacts. Overall, the dominant narrative is of a caring, stable workforce, but the negative accounts point to localized cultural or managerial issues that prospective residents should probe.

Dining and daily life: Dining is commonly lauded for variety, quality, and service, with many reviewers equating meals to fine dining. However, specific critiques include salty or unappealing dishes, inconsistent meal orders, and individual preferences not always being met. Daily life is characterized as active and socially rich: residents report lots of laughter, friendships, educational programs, spiritual opportunities, and ease of travel without worrying about home maintenance. The campus attracts people looking for an engaged lifestyle with many available wellness and recreational programs.

Cost and perceived value: Cost is a clearly recurrent theme. Many reviewers call Marquette pricey and refer to a country-club atmosphere; however, a large number of those same reviewers feel the cost is justified by the quality of care, amenities, and peace of mind. Prospective residents should therefore weigh the premium pricing against the full package of services, rehabilitation capabilities, and campus lifestyle.

Miscellaneous operational concerns: A few reviewers noted specific operational issues — indoor smoking or smoke odor with unclear disclosure, dress-code expectations in dining rooms, occasional housekeeping or maintenance oversights (clogged sink), and technology/communication annoyances (automated calls). These are not dominant themes but recur enough to merit consideration during a tour and discussion with administration.

Bottom line: The dominant sentiment across these reviews is strongly positive — Marquette is frequently described as a beautiful, activity-rich, and clinically capable CCRC with many glowing accounts of compassionate staff, outstanding rehab outcomes, and a high-quality living experience. However, there are meaningful, specific negative reports — some describing poor care or neglect in memory/assisted units and others citing management or departmental culture problems — that create variability in the overall experience. Prospective residents and families should prioritize an in-person visit focused on memory-care staffing and oversight, dining trials, observation of staff-resident interactions across shifts, discussion of exact costs and care-increase triggers, and clear policies on smoking and pet accommodations to assess whether Marquette’s many strengths align with their individual priorities and risk tolerance.

    About Marquette

Marquette is a local senior living community on a large 46-acre wooded campus, sitting just minutes from downtown Indianapolis, where people can find independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and short-term rehab, all on one site, so folks can move as their needs change over time. The place has apartments and ranch-style cottages for independent seniors who want maintenance-free living, and there's help available if and when people need it with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and managing medicine, which happens in the Bernard L. Strange Pavilion and Reflections at the Pavilion for those who need assisted living. Memory care programs for seniors with Alzheimer's or other dementia focus on safety and support, with spaces designed to prevent wandering and reduce confusion, and the staff encourages talents and interests using proven approaches.

Marquette supports an active, social lifestyle with plenty of programs and outings, like day trips and group activities, plus a wellness program, a calendar full of events, and a big 14,000 square foot fitness and aquatic center where folks can swim or keep fit. Pets are welcome, and the grounds outside are well kept, with plenty of walking paths and outdoor spaces where people can enjoy the neighborhood, and the community's restaurant-style dining serves home-cooked, healthy meals made from quality ingredients. Wi-Fi and high-speed internet are available, and the buildings are accessible for wheelchairs and walkers.

This community is pet-friendly and has a home care service so trained aides can help people who stay in their own homes but need some company or non-medical support. There's a healthcare center on campus that offers skilled nursing for both short stays and long-term care, with rehabilitation and therapy in a comfortable setting for those recovering from illness or surgery. Marquette earned good reviews from residents and families and has won awards for care, activities, and friendliness, and the campus is managed by Life Care Services®, an LCS® Company, and follows high standards with CARF International accreditation since 1994 for its continuing care and person-centered programs.

Families can expect a range of residential options, all designed for comfort, and a continuum of care that allows for a smooth change from independent living to more support if and when medical needs arise, so people can stay in a familiar environment as they age. The community's main goal is to offer services that support meaning, satisfaction, and health for seniors, with support and amenities to make life easier and more fulfilling.
