    Excellent care, poor management experience

I had a mixed experience. The US News-ranked facility has a nice room and dining area, excellent Alzheimer's and end-of-life care, and many compassionate, professional staff (Judy included) - residents were wonderful. But management was unhelpful and several CNAs were inattentive or not doing their jobs, making the overall visit feel negative despite good clinical care.

    Summary review

Overall impression: The reviews for Lutheran Life Villages - The Village at Kendallville present a predominantly positive picture of the facility's clinical strengths and environment, tempered by a notable set of interpersonal and operational concerns. Many reviewers highlight high-quality clinical care—especially end-of-life care and Alzheimer's care—which in some accounts exceeded family expectations and provided a better experience during difficult times. External recognition such as a US News ranking and repeated mentions of “good patient care” and “professional” staff reinforce the perception of solid clinical standards. Facilities-related comments are favorable as well, with mentions of nice rooms and a pleasant dining room contributing to an overall comfortable setting for residents and visitors.

Care quality and special programs: A consistent strength across the summaries is strong clinical care, particularly for palliative/end-of-life needs and memory care. The Alzheimer’s care unit is called out positively, and several summaries note that care quality met or exceeded expectations. This is corroborated by multiple mentions of compassionate, supportive staff and statements that family experiences were improved by the care received. Such comments indicate reliability in clinical protocols and sensitivity in caregiving for residents with complex needs.

Staff and culture: Staff receive mixed but mostly favorable feedback. Numerous summaries call staff caring, compassionate, supportive, and professional; phrases like “wonderful service,” “great staff,” and a named individual (Judy) being praised suggest there are standout caregivers and a subset of employees who deliver excellent resident interactions. Additionally, comments such as “love it, great place to work” point to a positive workplace experience for at least some team members, which can help sustain quality care.

Concerns: Despite the many positive notes, there are clear and repeated concerns about staff behavior and management responsiveness. Several reviews explicitly describe some staff as unkind and management as unhelpful or “not nice.” There are also specific operational complaints that CNAs are not helping or not doing their jobs. These points suggest inconsistency in staff performance and potential gaps in supervision, training, or staffing levels. The combination of praise and criticism indicates variability across shifts, units, or individual employees rather than uniformly excellent or poor performance.

Facilities, dining, residents, and visitation: Facility amenities and social aspects are generally viewed positively. Reviewers mention nice rooms and a nice dining room, and the facility is described as a great place to visit. Residents themselves are noted as “great,” implying a pleasant resident community and a welcoming atmosphere for family and guests.

Notable patterns and overall takeaway: The dominant themes are strong clinical capability—especially in memory care and end-of-life services—and many examples of compassionate, professional caregivers. However, the presence of multiple comments about unkind staff, unhelpful management, and CNAs failing to perform duties is significant: it points to uneven service delivery and potential management or staffing issues that could affect resident experience. In summary, Lutheran Life Villages - The Village at Kendallville appears to offer high-quality care and a comfortable facility with many caring employees, but prospective residents and families should be aware of variability in interpersonal interactions and front-line assistance and may want to ask about staffing consistency, supervision, and complaint-resolution practices when evaluating the community.
