    Lovely amenities but management concerns

I toured Rose of Des Moines East and had mixed impressions. The grounds, layout and amenities are lovely - sunny, spacious apartments, nice dining area, activities, 24/7 nursing and caring staff - and my mom settled in and seems happy. but the interior and lobby felt shabby and odorous, privacy and background-check issues worried me, and administration/communication was unresponsive and at times confrontational about paperwork. Staff on the floor were helpful and admissions was fast, but I'd be cautious and wouldn't blindly recommend it given the management and safety concerns.

    About Rose of Des Moines

Rose of Des Moines offers seniors a place to live with several care options like independent living, assisted living, memory care, and nursing home services, so you'll find folks there needing different levels of help, and there's also hospice care for those at the end of life, with home care and Open Arms Home Healthcare available. The main building has a U-shape, a big wraparound porch with flower boxes, and well-kept landscaping, and you can sit out front or in the raised-bed gardens or take a walk on the path around the yards. They've got different kinds of apartments, mostly one- and two-bedrooms with full kitchens, dishwashers, plenty of storage, and even air conditioning, with some units having waterfront views, patios, and gated entries, and everything's set up to be accessible for people who need it. All the rooms have mini-blinds and neutral carpets, and the bathrooms have big vanities and walk-in showers with seats. Pets can live with you.

Meals are important here, since there's a private chef who makes three meals daily using good ingredients, and everybody eats in a shared dining room, which can be a nice time to talk to others, and if you need help with dressing, bathing, or medication, the staff will help any time, and someone's always on site for emergencies, along with a call system and emergency pendants. There's laundry on every floor, a barber and beauty salon by appointment, community spaces for movie nights or music, an activities room, back patios with places to sit, a library with a fireplace, computer den with internet, and a chapel/theater for quiet or group events, while the fitness room, garden, and wellness spa are also available. Housekeeping, linen laundry, and medication management are all part of the support, and they'll organize activities like games, educational talks, and religious services, plus help with social outings, and transportation is free if you need a ride.

Rose of Des Moines runs as a continuing care retirement community, which means you can move in while you're still pretty active or if you need more nursing support, and staff will help you transition if your needs change. They do a twice-yearly license check from outside reviewers to make sure everything's in order. Medical places like Mercy Medical Center, Surgical Affiliates, and Walgreens pharmacy are nearby, which can be handy. The dining and activities get good marks for being friendly and organized, and there's a mix of resident-run and staff-led programs, so you'll see people staying busy with games, music, crafts, or just sitting around chatting. With space for pets, no smoking indoors, and a minimum age restriction, Rose of Des Moines is a place for folks 55 and up who want support and community, from breakfast through dinner and into the evening, whether you need a lot of daily care or just want to live in a simple, social setting as you age.
