    Beautiful facility with infection concerns

I chose this community for my mother-in-law and was impressed by the beautiful, clean, home-like facility, friendly welcoming staff, tasty meals, engaging activities, and a strong rehab/therapy team. CNAs, nurses, dining and housekeeping were caring and professional and made the transition smooth. That said, the COVID outbreak exposed serious infection-control failures (inadequate PPE, staff floating between sick and well, short-staffing and inconsistent attentiveness) that led to a resident death. Overall it's a wonderful, well-maintained place with compassionate people, but families should weigh the past lapses in infection control and occasional staffing inconsistencies.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Westchester Village of Lenexa are strongly positive in aggregate, with consistent praise for the facility’s physical condition, dining, social programming, and many aspects of staff performance. Reviewers repeatedly describe the community as clean, modern, and well-maintained, with spacious, handicap-accessible apartments, ample storage, and useful apartment features (e.g., breakfast bars, central HVAC and large closets). The facility’s hotel-like aesthetic, underground parking, pool, salon, and restaurant-style dining repeatedly draw favorable comments. Many reviewers explicitly characterize the place as "home-like," noting a warm atmosphere and strong sense of community driven by long-tenured staff and engaged residents.

Care quality and staff: The dominant theme is that staff are caring, professional, and deeply involved with residents’ lives. Multiple reviews highlight CNAs, nurses, therapy staff, dining and housekeeping, and administration as compassionate, respectful, and attentive. Low staff turnover and employees knowing residents by name are cited as evidence of continuity of care and family-like relationships. Many families report that staff went "above and beyond," helped with transitions to assisted living, and provided personalized attention (flexible scheduling, timely visits, and memorization of resident preferences). Administration and admissions staff frequently receive positive mention for being helpful, organized, and communicative during tours and move-ins. However, this generally positive picture is tempered by repeated notes about variability: some reviewers report inconsistent attentiveness from certain aides and nurses, and a minority describe episodes where response times were slow or communication was poor.

Facilities, amenities, dining, and activities: Across reviews the dining experience is consistently praised — described as tasty, restaurant-style with multiple daily meal choices, soups and snacks, fresh fruit, and attentive dining staff. Cleanliness is another recurrent positive: reviewers emphasize outstanding cleanliness across rooms and common areas. The community offers a broad list of amenities and activities such as Bible study, exercise classes, sewing clubs, social events, bus trips, and group transport for errands and dining out. On-site therapy and rehab services, convenient on-site primary care, salon services, and pool/fitness add to the appeal. Reviewers also appreciate practical conveniences like underground parking and prompt maintenance.

Care spectrum and rehab: A strength repeatedly mentioned is the availability of a full continuum of care — independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, rehab, and on-premise hospice — which many families find reassuring for long-term planning. Several reviewers report excellent therapy and rehab outcomes, praising the therapy team’s effectiveness and transitions to assisted living. That said, there are contradictory reports: a few reviewers explicitly call out substandard rehab care in specific instances. This mixed feedback suggests that rehab outcomes and experiences may vary by unit, staff on duty, or individual cases; prospective residents should verify therapy metrics and speak to current rehab families for specifics.

Safety and infection control concerns (COVID): One of the most significant negative clusters centers on the community’s handling of COVID-19 during an outbreak. Multiple reviewers alleged poor infection control practices, including inadequate PPE usage, staff floating between ill and well residents, failure to move infected residents to separate areas, and short staffing that compromised standard of care — with at least one reviewer citing a resident death attributed to transmission. These accounts stand out because they contrast sharply with other praise for safety and cleanliness; they represent a serious concern for prospective residents and families. Related safety issues include the absence of bedrails or bed alarms (some reviews noted these were not available and were told they were illegal), which reviewers questioned and cited as a potential risk.

Management, communication, and operational notes: Management and administrative staff generally receive favorable comments for communication, transition assistance, and responsiveness. Several reviews mention positive tours and helpful admission coordinators by name. Still, some reviewers experienced unresponsiveness (unanswered phone calls) and noted limited staff visibility in assisted living neighborhoods. There are also logistical gripes: confusing campus layout with long distances between connected buildings and small outdoor spaces/porches. The community’s pricing is described as "high-end," though many reviewers qualify that as "good value for money" given amenities and service level.

Patterns and contradictions: The reviews show a clear pattern of high satisfaction among many residents and families — especially for food, cleanliness, amenities, and compassionate long-term staff — but are punctuated by recurring issues around staffing consistency and a few serious safety/infection-control complaints. Rehab experiences and responsiveness to immediate care needs appear to vary across stays and time periods. Several reviewers praise hospice and end-of-life supports and note the facility’s willingness to accommodate large family needs and visits, which aligns with the overall emphasis on family-centered care.

Recommendations for prospective residents and families: Based on the review themes, prospective residents should (1) visit and evaluate assisted-living staffing levels and observe caregiver availability during peak times, (2) ask direct questions about infection control policies, PPE protocols, and any changes made since the COVID outbreak, (3) inquire specifically about bedrails/bed alarms and fall-prevention options, (4) request outcome data on therapy/rehab and speak to recent rehab families, (5) confirm details about assisted living staffing presence and response times (including protocols for urgent call responses), and (6) assess the campus layout and outdoor access relative to mobility needs. Also verify waitlist timelines, pricing structure, and what additional fees cover.

Bottom line: Westchester Village of Lenexa is frequently described as a high-quality, well-maintained community with strong dining, broad programming, compassionate long-term staff, and a comfortable, home-like atmosphere. These strengths make it attractive for many families seeking a continuum-of-care community. However, the serious COVID-era infection-control criticisms, reports of inconsistent caregiver responsiveness, and a few accounts of substandard rehab care are meaningful negatives that warrant careful, specific questions and on-site verification before making a decision.
