    Beautiful facility, many positives, inconsistencies

I placed my father here and overall the facility is beautiful, clean and spacious with lots of activities (bingo, recitals, garden, chapel), large TVs, bird cages and excellent physical therapy. Many staff are friendly, kind and responsive and residents generally seemed happy, but I also witnessed rushed or inattentive aides, a medication dosing error, and occasional cleanliness lapses. Management sometimes felt cold and unresponsive, COVID lockdowns were difficult, and the food is only average; it's pricey, so value is mixed. In short: great amenities and many caring staff, but watch closely for uneven care and communication.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment about Ecumen St. Benedict's Community - St. Cloud is mixed but leans toward a generally positive experience with important and recurring caveats. Many reviewers praise the facility's physical environment, amenities, and activity offerings. The campus is frequently described as clean, spacious, and up-to-date with pleasant grounds, a garden, and ample common spaces (recital hall, cafeteria, walking areas, gift shop). Rooms are noted as roomy with large HD televisions and semi-private bathroom options. The presence of an on-site chapel and an overt Catholic tone is commonly mentioned and is viewed positively by those seeking religious programming.

Activities and social programming are a consistent strength. Reviewers cite a large and varied activity calendar that includes bingo, shuffleboard, knitting classes, clubs, movie nights, and frequent musical entertainment (bands, violinists, keyboardists, guitarists, and recitals). The facility appears well-equipped for group events and community engagement, and many residents are described as happy and entertained. Transportation services are available, making outings and appointments more convenient for residents.

Clinical services and day-to-day caregiving receive mixed but significant attention. Several reviews commend the nursing staff, aides, and physical therapy—calling PT excellent, nursing very good, and staff responsive and attentive in many cases. Multiple families report that staff “bent over backwards” to help and that residents get needed assistance promptly. However, there are also serious and recurring complaints about care quality: reports range from staff feeling rushed and patient-centered care being insufficient, to grave allegations of negligence including a lost resident, dehydration leading to an ER visit, and medication mismanagement (unnecessary medications kept and a documented medication dose error). These severe accounts are interspersed with positive caregiving experiences, which suggests inconsistent performance across shifts, units, or individual staff members.

Management, communication, and administrative concerns are another prominent theme. Some families portray management and the executive director as cold, unresponsive, or callous—claiming that family calls were ignored and appointments were scheduled without family knowledge. One review alleges the on-site physician was invalidating or incompetent and that incidents have been reported to health authorities. Such accounts point to potential problems in transparency, family engagement, and incident escalation procedures. Conversely, other reviewers explicitly state the facility is not understaffed and that nursing coverage is adequate; this illustrates variable perceptions and possibly variable reality depending on unit, time, or resident needs.

Dining and cleanliness receive predominantly positive remarks but with notable exceptions. Many reviewers describe meals as delicious and express no complaints about food, while others call the food average or report cold meals. Cleanliness is often praised—“very clean” appears multiple times—yet a few reviews mention dirty room floors, crumbs under cushions, and even spiders on a couch. These contrasting descriptions again suggest that experiences can vary and that some lapses, though not universal, have occurred.

Cost and value are a consistent concern for a subset of reviewers who describe the community as expensive or outrageously priced relative to the care received. For prospective residents and families, this raises the importance of clarifying billing, services included, and how extra charges are handled. COVID-era restrictions are also noted: at least one review recalls a strict lockdown with no visitors and curtailed activities, plus a unit that resembled a sub-acute hospital during the pandemic. While pandemic restrictions affected many facilities, families should confirm current visitation and infection-control policies.

In summary, Ecumen St. Benedict's Community - St. Cloud appears to offer a well-maintained environment, robust activities and music programming, and many examples of compassionate, responsive staff and strong rehabilitation services. However, there are important and serious negative reports—some alleging clinical negligence, medication mishandling, poor communication from management, and inconsistent caregiving—that warrant careful consideration. Prospective residents and families should tour the facility, speak with current residents and multiple family members, ask for recent inspection reports and incident logs, verify staffing levels and medication safety protocols, and clarify costs and administrative policies to ensure the community’s strengths align with their expectations and to confirm that any past issues have been addressed.
