    Lovely community with some concerns

I live here and I love the bright, modern apartments, beautiful grounds, large library, dining room, and the many amenities-game rooms, exercise classes, chapel and a community garden with frequent activities like bingo and bridge. The life-care/continuous-care option, rides to doctor appointments, and good meals give my family reassurance. Staff are often attentive and caring, but I've also seen understaffing, scheduling problems and occasional unprofessional behavior and reports of discrimination that worry me. COVID precautions were reasonable and reopening has been cautious. Move-in costs are high but many find the independent-living community, sense of safety, and friendly residents worth it; opinions about long-term skilled care are mixed.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is broadly positive but nuanced: many residents and family members praise The Residency @ Northfield for strong nursing care, a warm, home-like atmosphere, and a wide range of amenities and activities. Multiple reviewers highlight attentive and pleasant staff, excellent care in the care center, and a continuous care or life-care structure that reassures families because it allows residents to transition from independent living to higher levels of care in one community. Long-tenured residents report happy years, consistent care, and a strong sense of community, while new residents appreciate the welcoming environment and the freedom to come and go.

Care quality and staffing receive mixed-but-leaning-positive assessments. Numerous comments emphasize high-quality nursing, attentive staff, and good day-to-day care. The community’s ability to transport residents to doctor appointments and provide full-continuum care is frequently noted as a major advantage. At the same time, several reviews raise concerns about understaffing, administration scheduling problems, and episodes where staff behavior was unprofessional or unfriendly—particularly toward new residents. Some reviewers describe staff drama and a stressful work environment, which they feel can negatively affect resident care at times. A small but serious subset of reviews alleges civil rights violations, language suppression, and racial profiling; these are outlier but weighty claims that prospective residents and families should investigate directly with management.

Facilities and amenities are strong selling points. The building and grounds are described as bright, shiny, and well-maintained, with a beautiful dining room, a huge library, game rooms, meeting spaces, lounges, a fitness room, and a community garden with a farmer’s market. Apartments are characterized as comfortable and modern, with options such as ground-floor units, in-room kitchens, and in-room laundry plus additional laundry facilities. Practical conveniences—garage parking, pet-friendly policies for small dogs, no yard work, and meals prepared for residents—add to the community’s appeal. Multiple reviewers explicitly called out the tour experience and apartment guides as wonderful, which suggests strong sales/marketing interactions for many visitors.

Dining and activities are frequently singled out as positives. Reviewers note good, well-prepared meals, flexible dining choices (dine-in or delivered to rooms), and a variety of activities including exercise classes, bridge, bingo, puzzles, and chapel/church services. The social environment—meals with new friends, group activities, and accessible shared spaces—contributes to a strong sense of belonging for many residents. However, activity availability was impacted by COVID-19 restrictions for some time, and a few reviewers referenced limited programming during reopening phases.

Cost and value perceptions are mixed: several reviewers mention a high move-in cost, but many also say the community represents good value for money given the amenities, care options, and peace of mind provided by the life-care model. Some see the community as “the best investment” for their stage of life, while others caution that it may not be the top choice if long-term, high-acuity healthcare is the primary need.

Notable patterns and recommended inquiries for prospective residents: there is a general pattern of strong communal life, robust amenities, and solid nursing care, balanced against occasional staffing and management challenges. Because reviews range from very satisfied long-term residents to those reporting significant administrative or staff-related concerns (including serious allegations about rights and treatment), prospective residents and families should tour the facility, meet both administrative and clinical leaders, ask for specifics about staffing ratios and turnover, request recent inspection or quality reports, and inquire about how the community handled pandemic safety and how programming has resumed. Also ask for references from current long-stay residents, and request clarity about costs, the life-care contract, and what levels of long-term/high-acuity care the community is equipped to provide.

In summary, The Residency @ Northfield is frequently praised for its caregiving, attractive facilities, broad amenities, and strong community feel, offering peace of mind to many families through its continuous-care model. However, mixed reports about staff professionalism, administrative scheduling, understaffing, and a few serious allegations mean due diligence is essential for anyone considering a move, especially if long-term skilled nursing needs are a primary concern.

About The Residency @ Northfield Retirement Communities

The Residency @ Northfield Retirement Communities sits at 2100 Circle Drive in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, on about 19 acres right across the street from Monument Mall, so folks don't have far to go for shopping, movies, or dining out, with places like the North Platte Valley Museum and Farm & Ranch Museum close by, too, and the apartments themselves come in different sizes ranging from a 660-square-foot one-bedroom to a roomy two-bedroom with a den stretching up to 1,600 square feet, some with walk-in closets, patios, or balconies, and each has a full kitchen, its own thermostat, cable, and WiFi, so people can set things up like home, whether they're more independent or want extra help down the hall. The community serves those age 55 and up, offering independent living, assisted living in The Vista, memory care, and skilled nursing at The Care Center, with extra support for those needing help with daily activities, medication, or care for conditions like Alzheimer's, all under one roof, so when health needs change, people don't have to move far, maybe just down the hall instead of to a new place entirely. Residents can get services like housekeeping, meal plans with all-day dining, nursing call alerts, laundry, and transportation as part of the monthly fee, while amenities help people keep busy and connected-they can tend gardens, walk the paths, play billiards, read in the library, make art in the crafts room, catch a movie, take fitness classes, sing with the musical group, or join Bible study, wellness programs, and even go on winery tours, baseball games, or trips to local attractions. Respite care and rehabilitation are available for folks who only need a short stay, and pets are accepted under certain rules, which many like. There's room service, plenty of common areas, a chapel for religious services, beauty salon and barber shop, storage options, secure parking, garages, a café, overnight guest suites, and a shuttle for getting around, plus safety is a focus, with emergency call systems, locked garages, and licensed staff on duty 24/7. The community is non-profit and locally run, any profits get put back into making the place better, and the Life Care program helps protect residents from big jumps in long-term care costs, which gives some peace of mind. The Residency has a good range of activities with folks from all over Scotts Bluff County attending community dinners or events, so there's always something to do for anyone wanting company or quiet time, and the whole community's built to let people live independently but get help quickly when or if health changes happen.
