    Vibrant campus but costly care

I live here and love the beautiful, walkable campus, friendly-often very attentive-staff, and the nonstop activities (music, lectures, classes, pools, even a preschool) that keep residents engaged. Grounds, rooms and cleaning are excellent and the community feels family-oriented and vibrant. Downsides are real: it's very expensive with high buy-ins/extra fees, occasional staff communication/low-pay problems, and it's better for healthy, mobile seniors than for those who are very frail or need intensive medical care. Overall I'm happy here if you can afford it and don't need heavy medical support.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries for Kendal at Oberlin is strongly positive about the community’s atmosphere, programming, and physical environment, but tempered by recurring concerns about cost, inconsistent reports about healthcare and food quality, and some organizational/staffing issues.

Facilities and environment: Reviewers repeatedly highlight the beautiful, well-maintained campus and grounds, spacious accommodations, large wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, and recreational amenities such as lap and therapy pools. The property is frequently called clean, peaceful, and walkable to town. Many families and residents emphasize a homey, family-like atmosphere and describe Kendal at Oberlin as a remarkably comfortable and attractive place to live. The presence of preschool/daycare programming and intergenerational activities is noted positively.

Activities, culture, and education: One of the community’s standout strengths is its cultural and educational programming. Multiple reviewers praise an active slate of activities—painting, theater, book clubs, concerts, recitals, and conservatory performances—as well as the strong relationship with the nearby college that allows residents to audit classes free of charge and attend lectures. Resident-led committees and a generally active, engaged resident population contribute to a vibrant social life; some reviewers even note a relatively younger resident demographic compared with other retirement communities.

Dining and services: Dining receives mixed but generally favorable mentions. Many reviewers describe the food as delicious with appropriate portion sizes; others report that the food has become bland or declined over time. Services such as housekeeping, groundskeeping, and campus amenities are often cited as first-rate, and some pricing structures are described as inclusive of cottage maintenance and a weekly housekeeper, which reviewers value.

Care and healthcare services: Reviews are mixed on the quality and suitability of clinical care. Several reviewers praise the community for outstanding care, noting attentive staff and good outcomes for residents who are ill or frail and referencing an onsite care center for medical needs. Conversely, other reviewers warn that the healthcare services could be improved and suggest Kendal may be better suited to healthy, mobile residents than to those with more intensive medical needs. This split suggests variability in individual experiences or transitions over time; prospective residents should probe current care staffing, clinical oversight, and outcomes.

Staff, management, and community governance: Many reviews commend attentive, caring staff who go to great lengths to support residents and families. However, there are consistent concerns about staff compensation and morale—some reviewers report low pay, unhappy staff, and instances where staff do not listen or communicate well. Management receives mixed assessments: several reviewers praise outstanding administration, while others report management problems, perceived erosion of the Kendal brand, and planning that focuses on maintaining the status quo with uncertainty about future direction. Reports of residents trashing or otherwise mistreating parts of the community also indicate governance and enforcement challenges in some areas.

Cost, contracts, and value: Cost is a frequent and significant concern. Multiple reviewers describe Kendal as very expensive, citing high buy-in costs, high monthly fees, and additional charges for many services—some characterize the billing as nickel-and-diming. There are also direct complaints about resale/buy-in terms (difficulty or inability to sell cottages). At the same time, other reviewers explicitly state that while not inexpensive, Kendal is worth the price and that they love living there. This split underscores that perceived value depends strongly on individual priorities: those seeking robust cultural life and excellent facilities may feel it is worth the premium, while others are troubled by financial terms and ongoing fees.

Operational issues and other concerns: Several reviewers note practical problems such as difficulty finding the address, poor internal layout or navigation, and organizational shortcomings. A small number of reviews mention a politically charged environment or planning tensions related to broader governance issues. These items, while less frequently raised than cost or care, contribute to a complex picture of community life.

Overall assessment and implications for prospective residents: Kendal at Oberlin appears to be an attractive, culturally rich, and well-maintained retirement community that many residents and families praise for its staff, campus, and programming. It seems especially well suited to active, engaged, and relatively healthy seniors who value arts, education, and a collegial community. However, prospects should carefully investigate the financial contract (buy-in and monthly fees, extra charges, and resale terms), current quality of clinical care and staffing levels, management stability and communication practices, and any specific operational concerns such as wayfinding. Given the mixed reports on food and healthcare quality and the recurring financial complaints, a thorough tour, conversations with current residents and families, and review of contractual and care-arrangement documentation are recommended to determine whether Kendal’s strengths align with an individual’s needs and expectations.

    About Kendal at Oberlin

Kendal at Oberlin sits at the corner of North Pleasant and Maple Street on over 110 acres with walking trails and an arboretum, and the place really brings together many different ways to live as a senior, whether someone needs independent living, assisted living, memory support, or even skilled nursing care, and everything's under one community with various amenities like apartments, cottages, and shared dining and living rooms. The facility's got kitchen facilities inside the living units so residents can fix meals if they like, but there are also shared dining spaces where folks can eat together, and there are apartment dining options as well so people can choose how communal or private they'd like things to be. There's an on-site gym and a wellness or fitness center where not only residents but also community folks join in on classes, and outside, people can walk among gardens and maintained paths or just enjoy the views of the buildings and nature beyond.

The StephensCareCenter focuses on assisted living, memory support, and nursing care with staff that includes a Director of Creative Arts Therapy and a Dementia Specialist, and along with their care for daily living needs, Kendal at Oberlin wants to promote independence, ongoing learning, social connection, and good health for all 325 residents or so. Kids come for the Kendal Early Learning Center, and there's a strong sense of community through things like the Active Residents Association, and everyone is encouraged to stay active, involved, and engaged. The community is nonprofit, started in 1993, founded on Quaker values, and cares a lot about diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Kendal at Oberlin offers programs such as Senior Independence and Kendal at Home, and with both independent and shared spaces throughout, residents can be as involved or as private as they want in their daily routines. The facility's accredited by CARF, has an A+ financial rating from Fitch, and is one of only three communities nationwide with this sort of financial distinction, and among its main strengths are the unique programs for care and engagement, and a long-standing commitment to resident comfort and well-being, and honestly, having choices in living, meals, privacy, engagement, and care makes it a place with a lot of options for different needs.
