    Caring staff, serious safety concerns

I found the staff loving, compassionate and friendly - devoted nurses who made my loved one comfortable in a very clean, active facility with lots of activities and a lovely park/outdoor space. End-of-life care and personalized rooms were strengths, and ongoing remodeling kept things fresh. That said, I saw safety concerns and heard reports of elder abuse, experienced uneven care and bland food, and felt the place can be emotionally heavy; it's also expensive (I found Angelhaus cheaper or equal), so I'm grateful for the caring staff but would be cautious.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews for Avera Mother Joseph Manor Retirement Community are mixed but lean positive in several important domains. Many reviewers praise the facility's longevity, cleanliness, and active community life; staff are frequently described as caring, compassionate, and devoted, with multiple mentions of excellent end-of-life care and a Christ-like approach to service. At the same time, there are a number of significant negative comments—most notably allegations of elder abuse and safety concerns—that are serious and stand in stark contrast to the otherwise positive reports. The aggregated picture is of a well-established, largely well-regarded facility that nevertheless has inconsistent experiences depending on the reviewer or specific staff on duty.

Care quality and staff: One of the strongest and most consistent themes is praise for staff. Reviews repeatedly call out caring, compassionate, and devoted nurses and caregivers; several reviews use highly positive language ("angels among them," "loving care"). Families say loved ones receive positive attention and would consider staying there again. However, this is tempered by comments noting inconsistency—"some nurses not all faithful"—and at least one explicit claim that overall care quality was not great. The presence of both glowing testimonials and serious complaints indicates variability in individual experiences. Given the gravity of some comments (including an isolated but severe claim of elder abuse), prospective residents and families should verify staffing stability, training, and incident reporting during a visit or by reviewing facility records.

Facilities, activities, and environment: The facility is described as clean and actively maintained with ongoing remodeling, which many reviewers appreciate. Activity offerings are highlighted as a strength: music, TV, and a good number of optional activities keep residents engaged and happy. Personalization of rooms is allowed and appreciated by families. A notable local asset is the large, well-equipped park and outdoor recreational space—playground equipment, picnic tables, sports fields, a dog park, skating/hockey in winter, and open space for croquet and other activities—which reviewers mention as a meaningful benefit for residents and the community. That said, a subset of reviewers find the interior environment depressing or report social friction such as gossip among residents; these social dynamics may affect individual satisfaction.

Dining, social atmosphere, and daily life: Several reviewers praise the facility's friendliness and the prioritization of resident health, yet there are repeated comments about bland or cold food. While some residents and families report a positive outlook and happiness tied to activities and staff interaction, others describe a more somber atmosphere. The social environment appears mixed—activities and friendly staff create positive experiences for many, but resident gossip and depressive tones create negative experiences for others. Memory-related comments (for example, a reviewer saying a resident "can't remember coming here") likely reflect the presence of residents with dementia; such statements suggest families should ask specifically about memory care programming and supervision if that is a concern.

Management, cost, and comparison to alternatives: Reviewers notice ongoing maintenance and remodeling, which signals capital investment and a willingness to update the campus. Cost-related feedback is mixed: one review praises the price ("buen precio"), while others say the cost is high and suggest a competitor (Angelhaus) is cheaper and provides equal or better care. These conflicting statements mean pricing and value perception may vary over time or by level of care; prospective residents should obtain current fee schedules, inquire about what is included, and compare care levels and services with local alternatives.

Safety concerns and recommendations: The most serious pattern in the reviews is the presence of at least one explicit allegation of elder abuse and broad statements to "avoid at all costs." While most reviews are positive and describe compassionate staff, any allegation of abuse must be taken seriously. Because reports are mixed and experiences appear variable, prospective residents and families should perform due diligence: tour the facility multiple times at different hours, request recent inspection and compliance reports, ask about staff turnover and training, check incident/complaint histories, and speak with current residents and families. Also inquire in detail about dining quality and menus if food is a priority.

Bottom line: Avera Mother Joseph Manor shows many strengths—experienced staff, a clean and active campus, robust activities, and a valuable outdoor park—alongside important caveats. Caregiver compassion and end-of-life care receive strong praise, but inconsistent reports of care quality, food complaints, social friction, and at least one severe safety allegation create a mixed overall picture. Prospective residents should weigh the positive indicators against the negative reports, verify current conditions and incident histories, compare costs and services with nearby competitors (such as Angelhaus), and prioritize direct visits and references before making a placement decision.
