    Impressive community with minor concerns

I toured this community and was impressed - bright, exceptionally clean, well-maintained grounds on the water, lovely private rooms, and a huge range of activities (outdoor/lake, pool, gym, music, memory care). Staff are professional, long-tenured and caring, dining is good, and amenities/transportation/therapy are excellent. My only cautions: there are reports of high-pressure sales/asset-based denials and occasional lapses (slow call-button response, rare therapy or night-shift issues), so clarify contracts and care expectations up front.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is mixed but leans positive for the facility’s physical attributes, amenities, and many aspects of care; however, there are recurring and serious negative reports around staff behavior, communication, and specific care failures that merit careful attention.

Facilities and environment: Reviewers consistently praise Shorehaven’s physical plant and location. The campus is described as beautiful, often on the water, with well-maintained grounds and attractive interiors. Amenities frequently mentioned include an on-site restaurant, underground parking, car wash, pool and hot tub, gym, game rooms, and plentiful social spaces. Many reviewers note bright, clean living areas and the ability to personalize rooms with furniture. Several accounts describe assisted-living units as spacious with separate bedrooms, living rooms, and large handicapped bathrooms. Overall cleanliness and modern/up-to-date facilities are a commonly cited strength.

Staff and care quality: Feedback about staff is polarized. A substantial number of reviewers strongly praise the staff — calling them caring, kind, competent, long-tenured, and attentive, in some cases becoming an "extended family." These reviewers highlight excellent medical care, exceptional physical therapy, helpful admissions/tour staff, and staff who know residents and families well. Conversely, other reviewers report troubling experiences: organizational disarray, poor communication, rude CNAs, lack of compassion (including a specific complaint about a night nurse named Mary), denial of pain medication, and at least one report of an infection that required hospitalization. Some families said they had to visit daily to ensure proper care. These contrasting accounts suggest variability in staff performance across shifts, units, or individual caregivers.

Clinical services and rehab: Many commenters explicitly praise the rehabilitation and therapy services, noting skilled physical therapy staff and comprehensive care. Yet there are also specific complaints about inadequate therapy or unsatisfactory rehab outcomes. This mixed feedback indicates the rehab program may offer strong services in many cases but that individual experiences can differ; prospective residents should clarify therapy goals, staffing, progress tracking, and expected outcomes before admission.

Dining and activities: Shorehaven receives frequent positive comments about the variety of activities and social programming — memory-care engagement, crafts, piano players, outdoor grilling, lake activities, transportation to events, and numerous organized programs. Dining usually receives favorable remarks for variety and dining options for families, though some reviewers describe the food as very poor. The majority indicate a broad, active calendar that supports different interests and levels of mobility.

Management, communication, and administrative concerns: Multiple reviews point to organizational issues and inconsistent communication from staff or management. Reported problems include unanswered call buttons, distracting lights/beeping, and administrative practices that some found problematic — notably high charges for holding an unused room (one reviewer cited $400/day), allegations of manipulative sales tactics, and denials based on assets. These administrative complaints, combined with reports of spotty communication about care, suggest families should carefully review contracts, financial policies, and communication protocols.

Patterns and risk areas: The most significant negative themes are serious: alleged care lapses (including infection and hospitalization), reports of neglect or lack of compassion, and inconsistent responsiveness (call buttons, night shift concerns). While many reviews emphasize excellent care and staff who go above and beyond, the severity of some negative reports means these may not be minor or isolated issues for the families affected. The polarity suggests variability in resident experience possibly tied to particular units, shifts, or staff members.

Recommendations for prospective residents and families: Given the mixed but detailed feedback, visitors should (1) tour at different times of day (including evenings/nights) to observe staffing and responsiveness, (2) speak with current residents and family members about recent experiences, (3) review medical, therapy, and infection-control protocols and ask how incidents are handled, (4) clarify pain-management and medication policies, (5) ask for staffing ratios and turnover details for relevant units, (6) carefully read contracts for fees related to holding rooms or asset-based admission rules, and (7) verify meal plans and sample dining if possible. If a potential resident has specialized needs (memory care, wound care, intensive rehab), request documentation of outcomes and references specific to those services.

Bottom line: Shorehaven scores highly on facility quality, cleanliness, amenities, programming, and for many residents the staff provide compassionate, skilled care. However, there are multiple concerning reports about communication failures, administrative practices, and serious care lapses. These mixed signals mean the facility can be excellent in many respects but that each family should perform targeted due diligence on staffing, clinical oversight, and contractual terms before committing.

    About Shorehaven

Shorehaven sits on 23 acres along the shores of Lac La Belle in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and offers senior living options across independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing care, all within a peaceful campus with views of the lake. Residents can choose from furnished rooms or apartments, with utilities included, weekly housekeeping, and two meals a day in some living options like Shorehaven Tower, which feels home-like and welcoming, and provides cable TV, WiFi, and emergency pendants for extra safety. The skilled nursing facility holds 88 beds, takes Medicare and Medicaid, and gives specialized care for more complex health needs, including round-the-clock supervision, medication help, and hospice care, as well as private or semiprivate rooms, and regular rehabilitation therapies for recovery or chronic conditions.

Shorehaven helps residents with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and medication management, with a 24-hour call system always available for emergencies, and offers memory care in a secured area with its own activity rooms, a den for private gatherings, and an enclosed walking path, especially made for people living with Alzheimer's or dementia, focusing on personalized care routines that fit each person's needs and choices. There are also assisted living programs, including Hillside Terrace, which has up to 26 rooms and another smaller 14-bed residential area, both with support for daily living but not requiring heavy medical services, and the campus also offers independent living at Shorehaven Tower, where active seniors enjoy maintenance-free living with their own schedules, social activities, and community-sponsored programs that include arts and crafts, walking paths, lifelong learning in classrooms, and devotional activities offsite.

Food and social life come together at places like Café LaBelle and the community center, with shared spaces like dining rooms, family rooms, and a library, plus a boutique, fitness and strength center, and an arts room, where different activities and classes are held as part of the Center for Life Enrichment. There's also a health and rehabilitation center, a salon, and a country store for everyday needs, as well as non-medical home support services through Life@Home for seniors who want help but still wish to live at home. The staff at Shorehaven believe in person-centered care, which means residents get to make choices about their routines, meals, and activities, and care services are offered as needed, sometimes on an a la carte basis if someone lives in Shorehaven Tower.

Safety is important, especially in memory care, with secured entry and enclosed outdoor spaces, and emergency call pendants offered in certain areas like Hillside Terrace. The grounds don't have listed outdoor amenities, garages, or parking details, but do offer places for walking and sitting outside, and there are no stated policies about what's included in the rent. Shorehaven operates under a faith-based mission, reflecting Christ's love by providing care and resources for seniors of all backgrounds, and Wisconsin state law protects residents from discrimination based on their income source, though federal law doesn't cover orientation or gender identity at this property. The setting stays welcoming and supportive, with friendly staff, many social and wellness programs, and a community feel that aims to help seniors live as independently as possible, whether they need a little help or full-time skilled nursing care.
