    Friendly staff, cautious about administration

I love the friendly, helpful staff - they know residents by name, run lots of activities and trips, keep the grounds and units clean, and the dining and transportation make independent living easy. My concern is the administration: I've found them evasive and money-focused (extra charges like moving furniture, talk of evictions), and a few families reported serious care lapses. Overall I'm very happy with the staff and community and would recommend the place, but be cautious and get everything in writing about fees and policies.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive for daily life, social opportunities, affordability, and basic cleanliness. Many reviewers praise the front-line staff as friendly, helpful, and responsive; several note staff know residents by name and are attentive to family concerns. The facility is described as very clean with well-kept grounds, reasonable pricing relative to other options, and with practical conveniences such as monthly housekeeping that includes bathroom and kitchen cleaning. Dining is frequently reported as accessible and good-tasting, and residents appreciate the ability to cook in in-unit kitchens for those living in duplex/villa options.

Activities and social life are recurring strengths in most reviews: residents report a myriad of activities including regular bingo, exercise classes, political discussion groups, weekly tea/social gatherings, and frequent shopping or day trips. The facility’s proximity to a university is highlighted as an extra benefit that brings in additional resident events. Multiple reviews describe successful social adjustment — residents making friends, being active in programs, and enjoying a social dining room atmosphere. Transportation services are available and used for shopping and excursions, which contributes to resident independence and engagement.

Care quality and safety receive mixed ratings. Several reviewers specifically commend the nursing staff and describe the memory care functioning well, with careful monitoring of walking and other safety measures. End-of-life care is singled out positively in at least one review for being compassionate and family-centered, and family members note that staff accommodated visits such as a dog visit. However, there are also serious and concerning criticisms: one relative reported a severe care failure leading to hospitalization and transfer out of the facility, stating that the staff "had no idea how to take care" and that the resident was not returned. This isolated but serious allegation contrasts sharply with many other positive care reports and suggests variability in the quality of clinical care or case management.

Management and administrative issues are another notable theme with mixed impressions. Some reviewers praise responsiveness and recommend the facility, while others criticize administration as being focused on money, evasive, manipulative, or even "ruthless," with at least one complaint referencing possible eviction maneuvers. Financial transparency concerns appear: reviewers mention upfront pricing worries and pay-for services that some expected to be included (for example, being charged for moving furniture assistance). These administrative complaints appear less about day-to-day caregiving and more about billing, policy enforcement, and perceived communication style from leadership.

In summary, Fairhaven Senior Services appears to offer a clean, affordable community with a friendly caregiving staff, varied activities, good dining, and practical amenities such as transportation, housekeeping, and housing options (duplexes/villas and in-unit kitchens). These strengths support good social adjustment and independent living for many residents. Conversely, the reviews reveal inconsistent experiences: some families report significant administrative and care failures, unexpected charges, and negative interactions with management or some staff. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility’s evident social and value advantages against isolated but serious care and administrative concerns, ask specific questions about billing and move-in fees, inquire about recent staffing and incident histories, and arrange multiple visits (including speaking with current residents and families) to get a fuller picture before deciding.

    About Fairhaven Senior Services

Fairhaven Senior Services sits close to downtown Whitewater and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, so residents often see younger faces and get to join in intergenerational programs, which probably keeps things lively around here, and being a Life Plan Community means folks can start out in independent living and then move to assisted living, memory care, rehab, or hospice, all within the same campus if they ever need more help as the years go by. There's the Hearthstone neighborhood for memory care, made for people with dementia or Alzheimer's, so it's designed to feel safe and homelike, while care gets tailored to each person's needs. The place has lots of amenities-there's a library, beauty salon and barber, fitness room, game and billiards lounge, movie room, and both indoor and outdoor walking paths, plus an enclosed courtyard and raised gardening beds for those who like to get their hands in the dirt. There's a mini-mart, general store, business center, coffee shop, and even a woodworking shop, and the staff provides housekeeping and laundry, so no one has to worry about chores, with meals coming three times a day in the Skylight Dining Room, made by chefs who focus on healthy, good-tasting food, and they can accommodate special diets like vegan dishes, low sodium, gluten-free, or international foods.

Fairhaven has a solid activity program, run by a full-time director who oversees things like outings, book readings, music, sports, arts and crafts, and dog treat making, as well as structured wellness and exercise classes like balance, brain fitness, dance, chair exercises, and personal training. Residents can attend regular religious and devotional services right on site, with Protestant, Catholic, other faith services, and a visiting chaplain, since the place is associated with the United Church of Christ but welcomes all backgrounds. Apartments and patio homes have different layouts, from studios to two-bedrooms, all with their own bathrooms, climate control, cable, and some nice views of the grounds; there's family rooms, kitchen appliances, and for those who need it, wheelchair accessible spaces and transfer assistance. The grounds are well-kept and the staff tends to be described as friendly, kind, and helpful, always there 24 hours a day in case anyone needs medical help or just a bit of extra care with daily life, like bathing, dressing, grooming, medication reminders, and meals, plus there's respite care to give family caregivers a break.

Health services at Fairhaven cover many needs, including skilled nursing, medication monitoring, psychiatric help, therapy for things like cardiac rehab, speech, occupational, stroke, or pain, and even support for anxiety, depression, or chronic illness. The community tries to help residents stay independent and active as long as they can, with transportation services for shopping and appointments, plus parking for those with cars. There's regular outings and events, like field trips, bridge, bingo, social hours, seasonal parties, dog visits, and a resident garden, and the place is pet-friendly, too, as long as no one's got a large dog or a pet that's hard to manage. The second-floor assisted living area's been recently remodeled and newer features keep things comfortable and up to date.

Fairhaven's got a not-for-profit setup aimed at promoting dignity and independence, with Life Lease options for those looking to settle in, and it offers a simple, small-town feeling even though the community runs big, with different floors and buildings for varying care levels, and people seem to appreciate how the community feels safe, homelike, and friendly without too much fuss.
