    Friendly staff, clean, minor drawbacks

I chose this community for my mom and overall we're happy. The staff are friendly, caring and responsive, the place is clean and well-run, and there are lots of activities and meal choices that residents enjoy. Some rooms and building areas feel dated, meal quality and scheduling can be inconsistent, and occasional staffing/communication gaps (and mixed reports about outside care providers) are drawbacks. Despite that, I feel her needs are met and I would recommend this community to others.

About American House Southland Senior Living

American House Southland Senior Living sits on the west side of Telegraph in Taylor, Michigan, standing three stories tall with a bright and elegant design, and the place has a wide range of living options for older adults, whether folks want independent living, assisted living, memory care, respite stays, or even skilled nursing care when higher-level medical support is needed, and there are all sorts of rooms, from private one- and two-bedroom apartments with full kitchens to rooms with classic furnishings that feel more like home, with wheelchair accessible showers and private baths included, and they do let people bring small pets, though they don't allow cats or small dogs, so people who like animals can still have some company, and residents get daily chores taken care of with housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance, and staff check on appliances and keep things working, and every apartment has emergency response systems for peace of mind and 24-hour staff on-site.

Folks here can join in a full calendar of activities like games, hobbies, field trips, parties, and scheduled outings, and there's an activities director who plans events to keep everybody engaged, so there's always something to do in the spacious common areas, like the well-furnished dining room, the library, the residents' lounge, or the cinema room for movie nights, and if anyone likes billiards or shuffleboard, there's a game room too. There's a restaurant-style dining room where meals get served three times a day with balanced menus, and if someone needs a little help with shopping, meal prep, or personal care, those services are included, and transportation to medical appointments or for group outings is available, so getting around isn't hard.

The community features an on-site beauty salon and barber, a fitness center with wellness programs, a physical therapy clinic, and social spaces both indoors and outdoors for spending time with visitors or neighbors, and people with different spiritual needs have devotional services both on and off-site, and there's Wi-Fi for staying connected. Medical services offer several levels of support, with nurses on call, medication reminders, hospice, and podiatry visits, and those living with Alzheimer's disease or other memory challenges get specialized memory care services to reduce confusion and promote safety, with dedicated staff and programs aimed at helping residents feel calm and comfortable.

Residents can choose living arrangements that suit their needs, whether fully independent or with more support, and for folks who qualify, the MSHDA Tax Credit Program makes some housing options affordable, helping a broader group of people find a place here. The building's location puts it close to Oakwood Heritage Hospital and Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, with local doctors and entertainment nearby, and staff aim to foster an environment where people can enjoy both social activities and quieter moments, whether they're spending time in the theater, library, or just joining neighbors for a meal. The whole place is part of the broader American House Senior Living network found in several states, and they've earned some awards for care and service, but what stands out is their effort to offer a safe, well-maintained, and socially active community where older adults can find support for whatever stage of aging they're in.
