    Clean spacious living excellent dining

I love living here - the building is very clean, beautiful and well-maintained, my apartment is spacious with a great layout and in-unit washer/dryer/full kitchen, and the dining is generally excellent with chef-prepared, appealing plates and anytime dining. The staff and residents are warm, attentive and helpful, with plenty of activities, transportation and weekly housekeeping; a few hiccups (occasional staff turnover, inconsistent food/service and some communication issues) keep it from perfect, but overall I'm very happy and would recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The Carlstone Independent 55+ Living receives strongly positive feedback across a majority of reviews, with particular praise for its staff, cleanliness, apartment quality, and many elements of dining and social programming. Many reviewers and family members describe the staff as caring, communicative, responsive, and willing to go above and beyond; multiple comments call the staff "fantastic" or "wonderful." The building is frequently described as new, clean, well-maintained, and pleasant-smelling, and apartments are characterized as spacious, well laid-out, and comfortable. Residents appreciate in-unit washer/dryer units, full kitchens, weekly housekeeping, and the attractive, home-like atmosphere. Value emerges as a repeated theme: many reviewers feel the community is economical or cheaper than alternatives while still delivering strong service and amenities.

Staff and care quality: Staffing is the single strongest positive theme. Reviews consistently note that staff are attentive, accommodating, and quick to meet requests. Communication from staff is often singled out as excellent, and families report smooth transitions and that residents feel valued. There are frequent reports that staff make residents feel part of a community, with many comments from family members saying their loved ones are happy. However, a notable minority of reviews raise issues with management and ownership — including poor communication, rudeness from specific owners or managers, and the perception that some staff or ownership prioritize pay over resident care. High turnover is mentioned, particularly among kitchen employees, and a few reviews point to a problematic individual staff member; these comments suggest variability in the day-to-day experience that prospective residents should be aware of.

Facilities and apartment features: The physical plant draws consistent praise. Reviewers highlight the modern, clean, and appealing building design and call apartments "large" and "well-designed." The presence of an in-unit washer and dryer and a full kitchen are repeatedly appreciated. The primary appliance-related complaint is the absence of a dishwasher (and sometimes a disposal), which several reviewers note as a drawback compared with expectations. Additional on-site amenities that receive positive attention include an on-site salon, a theatre room (also referenced as a tornado shelter), and pleasant common areas.

Dining and kitchen operations: Dining is a mixed but generally positive area. Many residents rave about the chef-prepared meals, specialty dishes (some reviewers said the food is better than local restaurants), and the anytime/all-day dining model with three meals included — several accounts describe appealing plating and weekly special meals. At the same time, a significant subset of reviews raise concerns: inconsistent meal quality tied to frequent kitchen staff changes, small portion sizes, occasional overcooked or bland items, slow service, and a lack of variety (the salad bar is specifically called "embarrassing" by some). Several reviews note that while the food can be excellent, consistency and quantity are areas for improvement. Dining hours were also noted by one reviewer as ending at 5:30 p.m., which could be a restriction for some residents despite the broader "anytime dining" praise.

Activities, social life, and transportation: Social programming is another strong selling point. Reviewers list many activities — music programs, Pilates and exercise classes, Bible study, cards, movies, live music events, and regular parties — and many residents say these offerings contribute to a lively social environment. A few reviewers, however, find some activities not very engaging or desire a wider range of programming. Transportation is offered for shopping and medical appointments and is appreciated by many, but a few reviewers report transportation issues or limitations, indicating variable reliability or availability at times.

Management, patterns, and notable concerns: While the majority tone is positive, certain patterns deserve attention. Repeated remarks about management communication problems, changed promises after move-in, and occasional rudeness point to leadership and consistency issues. High turnover—particularly in kitchen staff—appears to be correlated with complaints about food inconsistency. A small but significant number of reviewers describe a decline in services or resident attrition; this could signal localized operational challenges or transitions that prospective residents should clarify during tours. Cleanliness is overwhelmingly praised, yet there are isolated reports about restroom cleanliness that contrast with the dominant positive narrative.

Bottom line: The Carlstone appears to deliver strong overall value for independent seniors seeking a clean, modern community with excellent staff, roomy apartments, plentiful activities, and chef-driven dining. Most reviews recommend the community and report high resident satisfaction. Prospective residents should, however, probe management stability, kitchen staffing/food consistency, and the presence or absence of specific in-unit appliances (dishwasher/disposal) during a visit. It would also be prudent to ask for details about transportation schedules and sample activity calendars to confirm fit with personal needs and expectations.
