    Clean caring facility with flaws

I placed my mom at Deer Ridge Memory Care and was impressed by the beautiful, very clean facility, pleasant dining (two dining rooms), lots of activities, walkable spaces, and genuinely caring, patient staff who made the hospital-to-facility transition smooth and gave us peace of mind. That said, it's a small place with noticeable staffing shortages and some worrying lapses - missed meals/meds reported, lost laundry/hearing aids or glasses, and a months-long refund/billing delay that required repeated advocacy. There are exceptional, attentive caregivers and good communication, so I'd recommend Deer Ridge for many families looking for a homey, bright memory-care option, but I would caution those with advanced Alzheimer's or very high care needs to consider whether it's the right fit.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews of Deer Ridge Memory Care are mixed but lean positive on environment and basic staffing qualifications while showing consistent concern about operational reliability and dementia-specific care. Many reviewers praise the facility’s physical environment, meal program, and the compassionate attitude of numerous caregivers and leadership. At the same time, multiple reviews raise serious concerns about staffing levels, lapses in day-to-day care for residents with advanced dementia, and several administrative problems.

Facilities and atmosphere: The facility is repeatedly described as homey, bright, and very clean. Common physical highlights include wide, decorated hallways, two distinct dining rooms (The Rose and The Ivy), a media room, relaxed seating areas, a large kitchen, and a central patio. Reviewers frequently note that the building is walkable and that the overall set-up feels like an upgrade over a traditional nursing home. The smaller size/intimate feel is mentioned positively by many families, though a few noted rooms are small and that the facility may not be the right fit for everyone.

Staff and care quality: Many reviews emphasize that Deer Ridge staffs certified CNAs and LPNs and maintains a favorable staff-to-resident ratio in practice, with dementia training in place. Specific staff members (head nurse, director, housekeeper, chef) receive praise for being attentive, communicative, and helpful. Families commonly report timely updates, personal recognition (staff know residents/families by name), and smooth transitions from hospital stays. These positive experiences contribute to peace of mind for many relatives.

Care concerns and safety issues: A recurring and significant theme is inconsistency in hands-on care, especially for residents with advanced Alzheimer’s or complex needs. Several reviewers reported missed meals, missed medications, infections leading to hospitalizations, hospice involvement, and even death in at least one case where family members felt care was inadequate. Allegations include neglect, lost items (hearing aids, glasses), clothing/laundry problems, and security concerns. Multiple comments indicate staffing shortages or turnover and characterize the operation as going through "growing pains," with families sometimes needing to advocate strongly to get appropriate attention. These issues appear to be the primary driver of negative experiences.

Dining and activities: Dining receives generally positive notes—meals are described as enjoyable and well presented even if "not gourmet." The two dining rooms and shared meals are seen as social positives. Activities, a walkable layout, and programs (including a track some residents enjoyed) are mentioned frequently as beneficial; reviewers appreciate opportunities for engagement, and many say visits are enjoyable because of available activities.

Management, communication, and billing: Communication from direct-care staff and administrators is singled out favorably in many reviews—staff call with concerns and provide updates, and some families found leadership easy to work with. However, there are notable administrative negatives: at least one family reported a months-long unresolved refund for a community fee after moving a parent out within 24 hours, resulting in a billing dispute and a lasting negative impression. These financial and administrative breakdowns stand out as avoidable problems and contribute substantially to dissatisfaction when they occur.

Patterns and variability: The reviews show a pattern of polarization: many families strongly recommend Deer Ridge because of the facility’s cleanliness, pleasant environment, caring staff, and good communication. Simultaneously, a meaningful subset of reviewers report serious lapses, particularly for residents with progressing dementia, and recurring staffing shortages that negatively affect care reliability. Several reviews explicitly state that Deer Ridge was not suited to their loved one’s needs despite the attractive physical environment and friendly staff.

Advice for prospective families: Ask specific questions about current staffing levels (day/night/weekend), staff turnover rates, dementia-specific training and protocols for medication and meal administration, protocols for infection control and hospitalization, and how they prevent and handle lost personal items and laundry issues. Request recent examples of how the facility handled complex dementia behaviors, inquire about the billing and refund policies (documented timelines), and meet the head nurse and key caregivers. Visit during activity times and meals to observe interactions, and ask for references from current families whose loved ones have a similar care profile.

Bottom line: Deer Ridge Memory Care offers a well-maintained, attractive memory-care setting with many compassionate, communicative staff and a range of amenities that families appreciate. However, repeated reports of staffing shortages, care inconsistencies for advanced dementia, lost items, and at least one significant billing dispute indicate risk areas. Prospective residents with complex or rapidly progressing Alzheimer’s may require extra diligence and ongoing family advocacy to ensure needs are met; for others, the facility’s environment and many positive caregiver interactions make it a strong contender if the administrative and staffing concerns are satisfactorily addressed during the selection process.

    About Deer Ridge Memory Care

Deer Ridge Memory Care sits in Puyallup, Washington, surrounded by tall evergreen trees, and offers a safe place for seniors living with Alzheimer's, dementia, or other memory conditions, and you'll find that the staff here focus on kindness, patience, and respect while helping each resident with their daily needs like bathing, getting dressed, and enjoying meals that a trained team prepares in a big, nicely decorated dining room with family-style service, and there's always a nurse and caregiver staff on hand day and night, so someone's available if there's ever a problem or if a resident needs help. The building itself is secure and modern, with craftsman-style stone and wood details outside, and you'll see many safety features inside, like motion sensors, window alerts, pull cords, and secured doors and outdoor spaces that let people walk around and explore without wandering off or getting confused, and the rooms, though a bit smaller than in some other places, are clean and cozy, decorated in a traditional style with displays of old keepsakes to help spark good memories.

Residents take part in a daily activities program with social events, music, arts and crafts, and exercise, so everyone has something to do and someone to talk to, which helps build friendships and keeps minds active, and there's even a library, media room, and beauty salon right in the community for a bit of relaxation or fun. Deer Ridge runs transportation services for doctor's visits, and being close to the Kaiser Permanente Puyallup Medical Center means medical needs are handled promptly, and with health monitoring, medication help, and strong partnerships with area providers, residents get what they need when they need it. The community is pet-friendly, with maintenance-free apartments and reliable Wi-Fi, and families mention that the place is very clean, the staff are warm and attentive, and there's good communication when updates are needed.

Deer Ridge uses a personalized care model tailored to each resident and relies on the Living Well® program's seven pillars to enrich daily life and the Humanitude® techniques to improve how care is delivered, aiming to help each person feel a strong sense of purpose and dignity, and the facility focuses on reconnecting residents to cherished memories. There are engaging meals and cognitive-focused activities, and the environment supports both privacy and social time, so everyone can have their own routine but still feel connected to others, and the whole place is designed with memory care in mind, from the layout to the way staff provide help. While the community's still new and growing, and there have been some minor growing pains, Deer Ridge has a reputation for compassionate care, advanced safety, and a calm, peaceful setting, about 45 minutes out of Seattle and less than 30 minutes from Tacoma, making it a practical choice for families looking for specialized memory care in the Puget Sound area.
