    Decline in care after management

I chose this pet-friendly community because it preserved independence, had a nice tour, FaceTime accommodation, varied meals/activities and initially caring, gentle staff. After new management the experience declined: higher rates with no better care, staffing turnover, missed meds, care plans and paperwork not followed, poor night-shift communication, a deposit/refund issue and unsanitary incidents - hospice was helpful but didn't fix the bigger problems. Many staff were kind and informative, but overall the care didn't match the cost; I do not recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment about Brookdale Portage Memory Care is mixed, with clear strengths in staff demeanor, activities, dining variety, and facility setup, contrasted by serious administrative and care consistency concerns. Several reviewers praised the interpersonal qualities of many caregivers — describing them as kind, gentle, patient, friendly, and informative — and highlighted positive first impressions from tours and interactions with the marketing director. The community is noted as pet-friendly, supports resident independence, offers a range of meal choices and activities, and has a generally clean, well-laid-out building. Hospice services were specifically called out as helpful by some families, and accommodations for remote contact such as FaceTime were appreciated during transitions or restricted visitation times. For a number of reviewers, these positive elements made Brookdale Portage a top choice among local options.

However, a recurrent and significant theme is inconsistency and decline in care, especially connected to management and staffing changes. Multiple reviews report that care was good initially but worsened after new management or with staffing turnover. Specific clinical issues were raised: staff failing to follow established care plans, medication doses or supplies not being provided, and night shift performance flagged as a concern. These operational lapses contributed to reports of residents not receiving needed services and, in some cases, short stays that were not reimbursed. One particularly serious cleanliness incident was reported where feces was left on a recliner — an event that contrasts with other comments about cleanliness and raises red flags about standards being inconsistently applied.

Communication and administrative handling are another area of consistent complaint. Reviewers described poor communication, impersonal responses from staff or administration, and problematic handling of sensitive matters. Paperwork misalignment was mentioned, suggesting that documentation and coordination of care may be unreliable. Financial and policy grievances appear multiple times: families reported higher rates that did not match perceived value, deposit refund issues, denied reimbursements for short stays, and an overall impression that the facility can be money-focused. There were also mentions of a lack of condolences or empathetic administrative responses during difficult moments, which compounded family dissatisfaction.

Despite these issues, several families conveyed positive, trust-building interactions with specific staff members. The marketing director was described as non-pushy, tours were described as nice, and some reviewers explicitly stated they felt comfortable with the staff and the community's environment. Activities and dining received favorable mentions repeatedly, indicating that the daily life aspects for residents who are well served can be strong. Hospice integration being helpful suggests that the facility can coordinate with outside clinical supports effectively when those relationships are in place.

Patterns suggest two distinct experiences: one where families encountered attentive, compassionate care in a clean, activity-rich setting; and another where administrative changes, staffing instability, and lapses in basic caregiving led to significant problems and a sense that residents were not receiving promised services. For prospective families, the key considerations are evaluating current management stability and staffing levels, verifying how care plans are implemented and monitored (including night staffing and medication administration), clarifying financial policies (deposits, refunds, short-stay reimbursement), and asking for references from recent families to determine whether the positive aspects described by some reviewers are consistent today. Overall, Brookdale Portage Memory Care shows strengths that many families appreciated, but recurring reports of care decline, communication breakdowns, and administrative/financial issues warrant careful, up-to-date inquiry before making a placement decision.

    About Brookdale Portage Memory Care

Brookdale Portage Memory Care sits on Old Centre Road in Portage, Michigan, near The Moors Golf Club and the YMCA, and is part of Brookdale Senior Living, which means the community follows standards for memory care, assisted living, and home health care. The building is purpose-built with a secure setting, easy for residents with Alzheimer's or dementia to move about safely, and staff stay available around the clock-there's always someone awake, with nurses on staff too. The associates are trained to support residents each day, focusing on helping everyone achieve small moments of success and maintaining as much independence as possible. The surroundings try to look and feel familiar, with a home-like touch, so residents feel comforted and reassured, and the whole place is set up to let residents wander safely, whether they're exploring spacious sunlit common areas with plants, cozying up by a fireplace, visiting the activity room with games, or enjoying the outdoor patio and only need to step outside to find landscaped gardens and walking paths or rest beneath shade umbrellas.

The programs at Brookdale Portage Memory Care are designed for folks facing memory challenges, offering morning mental workouts, discussions, and games to encourage recognition, recall, and wellness, and there's a steady stream of organized outings, arts and crafts, and community-sponsored events to keep both mind and body active. The community supports resident-run initiatives, which promote socialization and give a sense of purpose, and companions and care staff stay patient and compassionate, experienced in responding to difficult behaviors and providing attention for those needing extra help or increased confusion. Residents can bring their pets-dogs and cats are allowed-which helps keep things feeling like home.

The facility is built to make life easier and safer, with an emergency alert system, monitoring bracelets that sound alarms if someone's about to wander away, and staff who handle laundry, maintenance, and housekeeping as well as regular checks on each resident's health and behavioral needs. There are different levels of care-light, medium, and heavy-so people can stay even if their needs change, and staff provide standby help or assisted transfers, including one-person, two-person, and mechanical lifts, as needed. Residents with incontinence get reminders or more hands-on care, and those with diabetes receive blood sugar monitoring and insulin injections. For those needing more help, the community offers hospice care, respite stays, aging-in-place options, and accepts people who might be struggling with major behavioral problems. All rooms have emergency call systems and private bathrooms, and units can be customized with personal items if a resident wants.

Dining is a social time in the well-lit memory care kitchen and dining area, set up for comfort, and meals are cooked fresh daily by a culinary team. There's an on-site salon, a library, a residents' lounge, and a sunroom or screened porch, plus internet access, wheelchair accessibility, and transportation services available. Staff encourage every resident to enjoy each day, create new memories, and stay as independent and active as possible, and the whole community keeps a respectful, kind, and peaceful atmosphere for everyone living there. Like many senior living places, there's a community fee and charges for different levels of care, but those details get worked out when someone moves in or changes what they need. Overall, Brookdale Portage Memory Care offers a calm, secure environment and strives to give every resident comfort, compassionate help, and a chance to belong.
