    Attractive facility but inconsistent care

My experience was mixed. The facility is attractive and generally well-kept with lots of amenities (salon, PT/rehab, game/TV rooms, patio), spacious rooms and some very attentive nurses - meals were often warm and enjoyed. However, staff reliability and responsiveness were inconsistent, cleanliness varied (I saw insects and an unclean dining area), rooms can be cramped for three, parking is tight, items went missing and care follow-up was poor - pricey, so I recommend with caution.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Alden Lakeland Rehab & Health Care Center is mixed, with a clear pattern of polarization: multiple reviewers praise the facility’s appearance, amenities, and some aspects of care, while others report serious lapses in cleanliness, responsiveness, and clinical care. Several reviewers highlight a well-kept property, attractive décor, and a range of on-site amenities that support rehabilitation and quality of life. These positives include skilled nursing and regular rehabilitation/physical therapy, an on-site workout room, salon services (beauticians and nail techs), an ice cream parlor, and numerous communal spaces such as an outdoor patio, game room, TV room, family and party rooms. Some family members specifically say meals were served warm and enjoyed by their relative, and they appreciate attentive, professional, and friendly staff and clearly outlined care progress.

However, the other side of the feedback raises significant concerns about consistency and basic care practices. Multiple reviews allege unhygienic conditions and even pest problems (cockroaches/insects). These complaints coexist with reports that some areas and shifts are very clean and well-maintained, indicating inconsistency—cleanliness appears to vary by unit, shift, or time. Clinical care concerns are serious in some accounts: residents reportedly were not repositioned as needed (not turned every two hours), respiratory care around tracheostomies was allegedly neglected, and there were reports of inadequate follow-through on care plans and doctor visits. Several reviewers said the nursing station was unresponsive or didn’t answer calls, and at least one report described roommate agitation or screaming without staff intervention. There are also reports of missing personal belongings, which raises safety and management questions.

Dining experiences are similarly mixed in the reviews. While some residents and family members loved the meals and praised them being served warm, other reviewers described the dining area as unpleasant or unclean and found the food quality poor. This split suggests variability in food service and dining-room upkeep depending on time or specific dining shifts. Room accommodations likewise show mixed feedback: some reviewers praised large rooms with private bathrooms and spaciousness, while others found rooms too small for three residents—suggesting that room size and occupancy vary across the building.

Management and operational issues surface repeatedly. The facility is described by some as above average with helpful, professional staff and regular rehabilitation, while others feel the staffing is unreliable and the facility fails to follow up on physician visits or individualized care plans. COVID-era visiting restrictions were mentioned as a negative by some families (limited access), and practical concerns like a small parking lot and perceived high cost were raised. A small number of reviews are extremely negative—stating the facility should be shut down—which indicates there have been at least some severe incidents or perceptions thereof. Taken together, the pattern suggests that experiences at Alden Lakeland can range from very positive to seriously concerning depending on which unit, shift, or staff members a resident encounters.

In summary, the dominant themes are strong amenities and rehabilitation services and a generally attractive, well-maintained physical environment reported by several reviewers, contrasted with inconsistent execution of care and cleanliness by others. The reviews point to variability in staff performance and responsiveness, which appears to be the key driver of disparate experiences: where staff are attentive and professional, families report positive outcomes; where staff are described as unreliable or unresponsive, reviewers report lapses in clinical care, hygiene, and safety. These mixed signals suggest that prospective residents and families should evaluate current staffing levels, infection-control practices, responsiveness of the nursing station, and specific room/unit conditions in person, and ask management about protocols for wound/respiratory care, turning schedules, lost-item procedures, and pest control to understand whether the positive elements are consistent and reliably enforced across the facility.

About Alden Lakeland Rehab & Health Care Center

Alden Lakeland Rehab & Health Care Center sits in Chicago and works mainly as a skilled nursing facility for people who've got serious medical needs, whether that's after a hospital stay, surgery, or illness, and it handles both long-term and short-term needs through the Alden Network, which is good because sometimes folks just need a bit of help to get back on their feet. The building's got 300 beds, and the ownership falls to The Alden Group, LTD, which runs it for profit, while accepting Medicaid and Medicare for payment, so many people can use it if they need to. The facility does a lot when it comes to therapy and specialty care, offering things like short-term rehab, post-acute services, ventilator care, dialysis on-site through a partnership with DaVita Dialysis, memory and dementia care, neurostroke and cardiac rehab, as well as orthopedic therapy. Residents get skilled nursing between 12 and 16 hours a day, and there's a 24-hour call system and emergency alerts in place for safety.

Rooms come with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, cable TV, air conditioning, telephones, Wi-Fi, and they're already furnished, so moving in isn't too much work, plus there are options for folks who have allergies since the kitchen staff, including a professional chef, will make meals that suit special diets, and meals happen in a restaurant-style dining room. The center runs scheduled activities daily, from movie nights to music programs, fitness classes, and even has its own movie theater, arts and crafts room, library, and spa, and folks have both indoor and outdoor common areas with walking paths, community gardens, and beautifully landscaped spaces where people can get some fresh air or have outdoor programs. For folks who need them, the place arranges transportation and helps with moving in, plus there are practical services like housekeeping, laundry, and family support, and a business room for those who still need to keep up with a bit of paperwork.

There have been federal and state inspections over the years, with Alden Lakeland earning a two out of five star rating on Medicare for staffing, inspections, and quality; it has received citations, including for pressure ulcer care, and has faced lawsuits over allegations of negligence and resident abuse, which is something families might want to ask about. In the last three years, the home got federal fines totaling around $61,400. The staff speak English, and there may be other languages spoken by some clinic staff, though there's no clear list of what those might be.

Right now, Alden Lakeland Rehab & Health Care Center isn't accepting new patients, and while the facility doesn't offer much in the way of marketing hype, it does try to provide needed medical and rehabilitation services for people coming out of hospitals or living with more complex conditions. People considering the center should weigh both its mix of therapy options and its inspection history as they think through their choices.
