    Neglect abrupt closure refunds pending

I moved in after good initial care but after heavy staff turnover I saw neglect and residents treated poorly. My room/bath was shared and hot water often took forever, though meals were usually okay and activities (bingo, movies) were very good. Management and some staff were caring, location and pricing were convenient, and parts of the building felt homey. Then the owners abruptly shut the facility, I was charged full rent with no notice, and refunds are still pending - overall very disappointed.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries is mixed, with clear strengths but also serious and recurring concerns. Positive comments emphasize a welcoming, home-like environment, engaging activities, and generally good food and caring staff — particularly at earlier stages or under certain management. However, several reviewers describe a decline in quality tied to staff turnover, inconsistent care, and operational problems that have materially affected residents and families.

Care quality and staffing present the most prominent pattern. Multiple reviewers reported that initial care was good and staff were nice and caring; however, several accounts indicate that after staff turnover the perceived quality of care declined, and some residents experienced neglect or being treated poorly. There are also contrasting notes that some caregivers remained nice and that management was attentive — indicating variability across time, shifts, or wings of the facility. Staffing instability and turnover appear to be a key driver of uneven experiences.

Facility and room arrangements are similarly inconsistent. Some reviewers enjoyed private rooms with private baths and appreciated the comfortable, homey setting and the option to use curtains for privacy. Others reported being placed in shared rooms with shared bathrooms and noted practical issues such as long waits for hot water. There are also mentions of building updates and planned improvements, which suggest investment in the physical plant, but these upgrades do not appear to have resolved all operational concerns for every resident.

Dining and activities are generally a strength but show variability. Several reviewers praised the meals — some saying the food is very good — and appreciated the regular activities such as games, bingo, and movie nights. At the same time, there are repeated comments about occasional mediocre or fair meal days, indicating inconsistent food quality. Activities are commonly cited as positive and meaningful for residents, contributing to the comfortable, homey atmosphere.

Management and ownership reveal mixed impressions and a major red flag. Some reviews compliment management as nice and attentive and cite planned improvements and positive engagement with families. However, the most serious and concrete concern is that owners reportedly shut down the facility without sufficient notice to residents and families — with reports of residents paying full rent with no prior notice and refunds still pending. That event shifts the overall assessment significantly: operational or ownership decisions at the top level have had direct, disruptive impacts on residents.

In summary, Oak Terrace Retirement Community appears to have offered a supportive, home-like environment with good activities and generally acceptable food for many residents, particularly when staffing was stable and management was engaged. Nevertheless, recurring reports of staff turnover, inconsistent care, shared-room placements for some, operational issues like hot water delays, and — most critically — an abrupt facility closure with unresolved refunds create substantial concerns. Prospective residents and families should verify current ownership and operational status, ask for details about staffing continuity, room options, dining consistency, and contractual terms related to closures and refunds before committing. The reviews suggest significant variability in experience depending on timing, staffing, and which management or ownership period the resident encountered.
