    Resort-like, caring staff, inconsistent management

I toured and moved my mom here. The community is clean, attractive and feels resort-like; front-line staff were warm, responsive and caring, move-in went smoothly, activities are varied, and dining is generally good. My mom adjusted and is mostly well cared for, but I've seen inconsistent management and staff turnover that led to lapses in memory-care (missed meds, occasional odors), housekeeping/billing errors, and uneven food quality. It's pricier with a possible wait, but I'd recommend touring to see if it's the right fit.

    Summary review

Overall impression Reviews of The Oaks are mixed but lean positive in many aspects. A large number of families praise the facility's physical appearance, cleanliness in assisted living areas, friendly frontline staff, chef-driven dining, and active social programming. Many reviewers describe a resort-like environment with bright apartments, flexible, restaurant-style dining hours, transportation to appointments, and an array of activities that keep residents engaged. Several families report smooth move-ins, excellent care coordination, and strong, responsive leadership who communicate well and resolve issues proactively.

Care quality and staffing Care quality is a recurring theme with highly polarized experiences. Numerous reviews highlight compassionate, attentive caregivers who provide personalized attention and treat residents with dignity. At the same time, there are frequent and significant concerns about staffing shortages, high turnover, and inconsistent caregiver training. These staffing problems are often most acute in memory care, where multiple reviewers report limited caregiver interaction, missed personal care tasks (infrequent showers, untrimmed nails, clothing left on), agitation among residents, and a noticeable reduction in activities. Several accounts raise clinical concerns: missed medications, delayed medication administration, unauthorized medication changes, and at least one report of nurses calling paramedics to medicate. Some families also note there is not always an RN on site and question the experience level of on-floor clinical staff.

Facilities, cleanliness, and safety Many reviewers praise the building, layout, and amenities: attractive, bright, two-story layouts, gym access, and well-kept common areas. However, the positive descriptions are interleaved with troubling reports of cleanliness and maintenance lapses. Multiple reviewers mention dirty silverware and glassware, occasional smells in memory care (urine odor), intermittent hot water, and housekeeping failures such as lost linens or mishandled laundry. Safety-related concerns arise as well: at least one resident fall with injury and mentions of heavy laundry doors posing a safety hazard. Noise from in-room HVACs and sporadic maintenance issues also appear in the feedback. In short, the physical plant is often well-regarded but there are pockets of troubling operational inconsistencies.

Dining and nutrition Dining is generally one of The Oaks strengths: many families praise the chef, restaurant-style meals, flexibility in dining times, and menu variety. Several reviews specifically call out excellent soups, open-kitchen hours, and accommodating dining staff. Conversely, a not-insignificant number of reviewers critique the food for being over-seasoned, too salty, inconsistent, or less appealing in memory care. There are reports of menu items being out of stock and difficulty chewing certain offerings. Thus, while dining is a highlight for many, experiences vary by unit and shift.

Activities and social life Activity offerings are often highlighted positively: daily calendars, piano and weekend entertainers, crafts, movie nights, cards and poker games, exercise classes, and bus outings. The activities director receives strong praise in many reviews, with several families noting a marked improvement in resident engagement when the coordinator is active. That said, activity levels appear inconsistent across units, with several reports of limited or no activities in memory care and some residents not participating despite opportunities.

Management, communication, and administration Management and administrative performance shows a wide range. Many accounts commend leadership for clear communication, responsiveness, and proactive problem solving — instances where an initially reported issue was fixed and families were kept informed. But there are also multiple, serious allegations of administrative failures: refusal or delay in providing medical charts to powers of attorney, unauthorized medication changes, billing and invoice errors, overbilling, and delayed care plan creation. Some reviewers describe a sales-driven admission approach or unhelpful administrative staff. These mixed accounts suggest variability in the administrative team's effectiveness and highlight the importance of confirming documentation handling and billing practices during tours.

Patterns, recommendations, and caveats A clear pattern emerges of a facility with strong positives that is vulnerable to operational inconsistencies. Praise tends to concentrate on the aesthetic environment, dining, and caring frontline staff; criticism clusters around staffing levels, memory care quality, medication management, and administrative transparency. Several reviews note improvements after leadership intervened or after an initial adjustment period, while others report persistent issues despite complaints.

If considering The Oaks, prospective families should take away a balanced view: many residents and families are very satisfied and highly recommend the community, but there are recurrent and significant concerns worth investigating in person. Recommended due diligence includes asking specific questions about current staffing ratios (especially in memory care and night shifts), on-site nursing coverage (RN availability), medication administration protocols and audit trails, housekeeping and laundry procedures, incident and fall histories, billing practices, and the facility's willingness to share medical records with designated POAs. Tour multiple times if possible, speak with current family members, and verify how the community supports memory care residents to ensure that the high points noted in many reviews will be consistent for your loved one.

    About The Oaks

The Oaks stands as a senior living community that gives people options for independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing, all in one place, so folks who move in can count on that continuity no matter how their needs change. The community belongs to Merrill Gardens and sits under the Arizona Department of Health Services license. Residents find all sorts of living options, from studios and one or two-bedroom apartments with private bathrooms and kitchenettes, comfortable heating and air, and easy-access showers, so everyone gets something that fits both their needs and wishes. Those who enjoy being out in the open air will probably appreciate the enclosed courtyard, walking paths, sunroom, terrace gardens, and outdoor patio areas that come complete with fireplaces and seating, making it easier to spend time outside safely.

The Oaks makes day-to-day life simpler with housekeeping, laundry, dry cleaning, grocery shopping, transportation, and maintenance-free living, so people have support with daily chores. Transportation comes both complimentary and at a cost, and weekly shuttle trips or private rides help folks keep appointments or get around town with less fuss. An on-site fitness center with daily exercise classes helps keep people moving, while amenities like a movie room, computer room, billiards lounge, library, beauty salon, game room, and arts and crafts center give people many things to do indoors.

Meals at The Oaks come as chef-prepared dishes, with three served every day in the restaurant-style dining room or the bistro, and special diets like low sodium or low sugar handled upon request. Residents can enjoy an active calendar run by a full-time concierge, with activities for social clubs, crafts, spiritual services for Protestant, Catholic, and LDS/Mormon residents, plus a visiting chaplain, and programs like reminiscence and cognitive enrichment, which are especially helpful for those with memory challenges. The memory care area uses secured spaces and routines meant to reduce confusion and prevent wandering for residents with dementia or Alzheimer's. People who need help with daily living tasks, like bathing, dressing, medication, or personal care, get attentive support that respects dignity and independence.

The Oaks also offers respite stays, short term options, hospice services, aging in place, and home care, supporting people even if their needs are temporary or changing. Residents have access to Wi-Fi and cable TV with no extra charge, private parking for those still driving, and security features like emergency response pendants and round-the-clock on-call care. Staff include an executive director, a Director of Sales and Marketing, and contacts like Jessica Gonia, Carol Mazza, and Kevin Pugh, with someone always available in the sales office every day, 8am to 8pm, to answer questions. The Oaks community works to keep people comfortable, secure, and as independent as possible, with a helpful, kind staff and amenities made for older adults at every stage.
