    Compassionate staff but poor management

I appreciated the compassionate, skilled CNAs and nurses, the clean, beautiful facility, private room, delicious meals and lively activities - my family and I felt welcome and well cared for at times. However, communication and medical coordination were often poor: nurses didn't update family, meds were delayed or missed, records were incomplete, and rehab/discharge decisions were handled badly (even sudden discharges and readmission). I also saw understaffing, slow call-button responses, occasional unprofessional or discriminatory behavior, and small issues like lumpy beds and cold meals. Great frontline care and atmosphere, but management, safety and communication lapses give me serious pause about recommending it without reservation.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is mixed but leans positive in many reviews: a substantial number of reviewers praise La Loma Village Health & Rehabilitation Center for its caring staff, cleanliness, and robust programming. Many families emphasize the professionalism and compassion of nurses, CNAs, and therapy staff, noting attentive, patient-centered care and instances of staff going "above and beyond." The facility’s multidisciplinary team is frequently called out positively, with food services, social services, and administration also receiving favorable mentions. The environment itself is often described as clean, modern, and well maintained, with attractive grounds and spacious or private rooms. Dining and activities are strengths for many: reviewers mention delicious, healthy meals and a wide range of menu options, along with a lively social calendar, varied activities (painting, gardening, bridge groups, party celebrations), and explicit praise for a Life Enrichment director (Mary G) who creates meaningful resident engagement.

However, there is a clear and recurring set of concerns that temper the positive comments. Understaffing and slow response times surface repeatedly: reviewers report long waits after pressing call buttons, delayed toileting assistance, limited or disrupted showers, and in some cases reliance on bed pans due to delayed help. Medication management problems are another frequent theme—delayed meds, pain medication timing issues, single nurses administering meds causing delays, and inadequate explanations about medications. Those care-delivery problems often overlap with communication breakdowns: family members report poor or absent communication from nurses or physicians, incomplete medical records, and discharge paperwork or planning issues that created stress and, in some cases, resulted in readmission to hospital.

Care consistency is a strong dividing line in the reviews. Several families describe "amazing" nursing staff, fantastic CNAs, excellent physical therapy, and organized, reassuring teams that make them feel welcome and well cared for. Conversely, other reviewers recount disinterested staff, unorganized teams, rude or unprofessional behavior, and management that they deem inadequate. This inconsistency appears across multiple service areas—nursing, rehab, and administration—so that one family’s 5-star experience can coexist with another’s one-star complaint. Notably, rehabilitation experiences are mixed: some praise therapists and rehab outcomes, while others say rehab care was poor, discharge timing inappropriate, or that the resident was sent home prematurely without adequate support.

Serious concerns are also raised about culture and professionalism. Multiple reviewers allege racist or discriminatory treatment and hostile reception by some staff; these claims, even if from fewer reviews, are significant because they touch on resident safety and the facility’s atmosphere. Other operational issues mentioned include broken equipment or bed controls, room cleanliness problems (dust beneath beds), phones not being answered at the nurse station, and perceived prioritization of insurance or billing considerations over patient-centered release decisions.

Dining and activities receive generally positive marks but are not immune to criticism. Many reviewers praise the food—sometimes calling it better than hospital food—while others report cold breakfasts, late meals, or uneatable items. The life-enrichment program is a standout positive in many accounts (special events, classes, and a full activity roster), but a few families felt activities or engagement could be uneven depending on staff availability.

In summary, La Loma Village Health & Rehabilitation Center shows clear strengths in staffing compassion (especially CNAs and some nurses), therapy services, life enrichment programming, cleanliness, and an attractive facility. These strengths lead many families to highly recommend the center and to feel reassured about their loved ones’ care. Nevertheless, there are consistent and substantive negatives to consider: staffing shortages and responsiveness, medication and communication failures, inconsistent care coordination, discharge and paperwork problems, and alarming reports of unprofessional or discriminatory behavior. Prospective residents and families should weigh these patterns carefully: the facility can provide excellent, nurturing care but also demonstrates variability in reliability and management that may materially affect a patient’s experience. When considering La Loma, visitors should ask about staffing levels, medication administration procedures, discharge planning protocols, how the facility handles complaints and allegations of discrimination, and directly observe a typical mealtime and activity to assess consistency.
