    Good value for independent seniors

I moved my father here and overall I'm pleased: the facility is very clean, laundry is done, meals have good variety, there's outdoor space, ramps, two dining rooms and lots of daily activities (chair exercise, walks, bingo, cards) that keep residents active. The owner, his wife and staff are genuine, attentive and create a friendly, homey vibe - they check on residents and really care. It's budget-friendly but rooms can be shared and personal care costs extra. Important caveat: it's not set up for dementia or high-needs care - staffing/oversight is limited - and the building isn't as well kept as some others; a pervasive smoke smell and residents smoking on porches/indoors was a concern. For an independent, active senior this is a good value; not appropriate for those needing hands-on medical care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed but leans positive with strong praise for staff, activities, and the homelike atmosphere, tempered by notable concerns about smoking, facility upkeep, and suitability for residents with higher-care needs. Across multiple reviews people consistently highlight that staff are caring, attentive, and make an effort to keep residents engaged. Several reviewers explicitly said staff "do a great job," check on residents regularly, and create a friendly, inviting community. The owner and his wife were mentioned as being accessible, and one individual named David Lin was praised for being genuine and understanding. Value is frequently cited — reviewers felt the facility provided good services for the cost and that residents appeared happy and alert.

Care quality: Reviews indicate that Redwood Road Care Home provides reliable daily support for seniors who are relatively independent or need light assistance. Staff are described as caring, concerned, and proactive in checking on residents. Scheduled activities and social engagement appear to be strengths, suggesting staff prioritize resident quality of life and mental stimulation. However, several reviewers emphasized that the facility is not appropriate for residents with dementia or higher medical needs. Comments point to insufficient clinical staffing and oversight for complex care; some families even considered hiring private nurses or supplemental in-home caregivers to meet their loved ones' needs. Personal care services are available but are noted as an extra charge, which factors into total cost and budget considerations for families.

Staff and management: The staff receive consistent positive remarks — they are friendly, welcoming, and active in keeping residents engaged. Multiple reviewers specifically complimented interactions with management and ownership, noting that the owner and his wife are present and approachable. David Lin was singled out positively. This leadership and staff engagement contribute to a homelike vibe and good resident morale. Nonetheless, praise for staff does not always translate to confidence in clinical capability; the recurring caveat is that while day-to-day assistance and social care are strong, clinical or dementia-specific care appears lacking.

Facilities and environment: Reviews about the physical facility are mixed. Several reviewers described the home as clean and well kept, and some noted useful features such as outdoor space, ramps for accessibility, and multiple dining areas. At the same time, other reviewers raised concerns about building maintenance, saying the property is "not as kept up as some others." A serious and recurring negative point is the pervasive smell of smoke and multiple reports of residents smoking on the porch and in living areas. This creates an inconsistent picture: while some families experienced a clean, pleasant environment, others encountered odors and behaviors that would be problematic for persons sensitive to smoke or for families seeking a stricter non-smoking policy.

Dining and activities: Dining is frequently mentioned in a positive light — reviewers noted meals with a nice variety and an overall enjoyable mealtime experience. Activities appear to be well organized and happening daily; specific programs such as chair exercise, walks, bingo, and card games were cited. Reviewers credited staff for making an effort to keep residents active, and several respondents indicated that their family members were happy with the activity schedule and social opportunities.

Key patterns and considerations: The dominant positive themes are strong staff engagement, active programming, a homelike and friendly atmosphere, and perceived value. The dominant negatives are smoking and odor issues, uneven facility maintenance, and insufficient care capability for residents with dementia or high medical needs. Shared rooms and extra charges for personal care were also mentioned as potential downsides that affect cost and privacy. Prospective families should weigh these trade-offs: Redwood Road Care Home appears well suited to budget-conscious families seeking a warm, activity-rich environment for relatively independent seniors. It is less suitable for those needing skilled nursing, dementia care, strict non-smoking policies, or private, high-level clinical oversight.

In summary, reviewers consistently praise the people who work at Redwood Road Care Home and the social environment they create, but several important operational and clinical limitations appear repeatedly in the feedback. If you prioritize compassionate staff, daily activities, and a homelike feel and your loved one is fairly independent, these reviews suggest the facility could be a good fit. If your primary concerns are clinical supervision, dementia-specific care, a smoke-free environment, or top-tier building maintenance, the reviews recommend caution and additional inquiry before committing.

People who can't drive can get rides to medical appointments or run errands, though there's an extra cost for transportation, and if someone has a car, there's parking and the place is close to buslines too. Hospice care and respite stays are available for those who need them, and memory care is an option for residents dealing with cognitive issues. Pets are welcome, and there's a hair salon on-site for grooming needs. The staff checks up on each resident's changing needs, tailoring care as needed, and they help everyone feel a sense of community and safety. No smoking is allowed inside any room or public area. Redwood Road Care Home maintains a "Very Good" 3.5-star rating and welcomes both men and women, with care and activity options aimed at helping people live as independently as possible in a friendly, comfortable space.
