    Great staff, serious care concerns

I have mixed feelings. The staff and doctors I dealt with were outstanding - loving, communicative, and quick to resolve problems - and the new facility, gardens and visiting spaces are beautiful and odor-free. But I also experienced serious issues: an advance directive was changed without consent, a patient was cruelly discharged and improperly transferred, tests were done against wishes, and nursing care, cleanliness and food quality were inconsistent; I reported concerns to the health department and think a new medical director is needed.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is highly mixed and polarized: many reviewers praise Edgemoor Hospital for exceptional, compassionate care and excellent facilities, while others report serious, sometimes potentially legal and ethical concerns about patient rights, discharge practices, and management. The dominant positive themes focus on caring staff, strong communication, and an attractive, modern physical environment. The dominant negative themes raise red flags around legal/ethical behavior, inconsistent nursing care, cleanliness inconsistencies, and dining/routine concerns.

Care quality and staff: A substantial portion of reviewers emphasize outstanding, loving, and compassionate staff, highlighting excellent communication and quick resolution of issues. Several reviewers specifically praise the doctors and hospice/palliative care services, saying the clinical teams provide sensitive, appropriate care in difficult circumstances. These positive comments suggest that many families and patients experience attentive clinical care and good coordination. Contrastingly, other reviews describe nursing staff as unfriendly or indifferent, including claims that nurses "could care less" and do not assist with mobilizing patients ("do not get the patients up"). This split suggests inconsistent experiences across units, shifts, or patient cases — some teams provide exemplary bedside care while others fall short of basic support and engagement.

Management, legal, and ethical concerns: Multiple serious concerns appear in the negative summaries and should be highlighted as distinct and significant patterns. Reports include an alleged illegal change of an advance directive, invasive tests performed against a patient's wishes, cruel or abrupt discharges, and improper hospital transfers. These issues are severe because they relate to patient autonomy, consent, continuity of care, and regulatory compliance. Several reviewers explicitly said legal actions or complaints were reported to the health department, and there were calls for a new medical director — indicating loss of trust in clinical leadership and oversight. While positive reviews vouch for clinical compassion and communication, these legal and ethical allegations represent high-priority concerns that could warrant investigation or verification before relying on the facility for vulnerable patients.

Facilities, cleanliness, and environment: The physical plant and grounds receive strong praise from many reviewers. Descriptions include "state-of-the-art" facilities, a beautiful garden area, and a generally very clean, odor-free environment. Visiting experiences are described positively, and some reviewers rank the hospital among the best in San Diego County. However, a minority of reviews describe filthy conditions, which creates a notable contradiction. The coexistence of both "very clean" and "filthy" reports suggests variability in housekeeping standards across different areas or times, or differences in individual expectations and experiences.

Dining, routines, and patient comfort: Several reviews mention problems related to food and daily routines. Complaints include "food is old" and an enforced early bedtime of 7:00 pm. These comments point to potential issues with meal quality, timing, or patient-centered routines, particularly for patients who require flexible schedules. Such concerns tend to affect satisfaction and perceived quality of life even when clinical care is otherwise strong.

Context and reputation: There is also a historical note in the reviews about the demolition of the old Edgemoor Hospital before 2009, which some reviewers mention with dissatisfaction or nostalgia. At the same time, the newer facility is frequently praised as modern and attractive. The overall picture is of a facility with a strong, positive reputation among many users (including praise for staff, communication, and the environment) but with serious, recurring criticisms in areas that directly impact patient rights and safety. These criticisms — particularly allegations of unauthorized changes to advance directives, unwanted invasive testing, abrupt discharges, and regulatory complaints — are significant and should be investigated or clarified by prospective patients, families, or regulators.

Bottom line: If you are evaluating Edgemoor Hospital, weigh these polarized experiences carefully. The facility appears capable of delivering high-quality, compassionate care in a modern, pleasant setting, and many families report excellent interactions. However, there are multiple, serious allegations regarding patient autonomy, discharge practices, transfers, and management oversight that represent major red flags. Prospective patients and families should seek specific assurances about how advance directives and consent are handled, ask about leadership and medical director stability, inquire about nursing ratios and mobilization practices, and, if possible, talk with recent families or inspect the specific unit of interest to assess consistency in cleanliness and daily routines.
