    Excellent therapy, but staffing problems

I appreciated the beautiful, well-maintained, handicapped-accessible building, nice dining area, and outstanding rehab/physical therapy team - several nurses, CNAs and therapists were loving, patient and professional. Too often, though, the place felt short-staffed: slow call-button response, long dining waits, inconsistent/tasteless food, small rooms, and spotty housekeeping or residents left waiting. Administration seemed dismissive and possibly misleading about staffing, which undercut otherwise excellent clinical care. In short: great therapy and many caring staff, but persistent staffing and management problems make me cautious.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment from the collected reviews is mixed and at times sharply polarized. Multiple reviewers praise compassionate caregivers, an effective therapy/rehab department, and an attractive, modern facility; at the same time, other reviewers describe serious operational and safety concerns — leaving a pattern of both strong positives and significant negatives. That contrast shows up repeatedly: where some residents and families experienced attentive, lifesaving care and strong therapy outcomes, others report neglect, poor cleanliness, and administrative failures.

Care quality and frontline staff: The most consistent positive theme is the quality of care delivered by many individual caregivers. Several reviews call staff "angels," describe nurses and CNAs as loving, patient, and professional, and state that medication dispensing was accurate. The physical therapy and rehab teams receive particularly strong and repeated praise, with multiple mentions that the rehab department was excellent and even life-changing for some residents. However, an opposing and recurring concern is slow or inadequate assistance when residents need help — long call-light response times, staff described as slow to assist, and incidents where residents were left in wheelchairs for hours or were kept flat in bed. These staffing and responsiveness issues are linked by reviewers to understaffing and appear to be the primary driver of negative experiences.

Facility and environment: Several reviewers describe the building as attractive, well-maintained, handicapped accessible with wide hallways, and relatively new (e.g., a two-year-old building). Others, however, report serious cleanliness problems — rooms never cleaned and an overall dirty facility. These conflicting accounts suggest variability over time or between units/wing experiences. Rooms are generally described as sufficient or nice by some, but a subset of reviews call rooms too small. The dining area is frequently called nice or beautiful.

Dining and activities: Dining reviews are also mixed. Multiple reviewers applaud the chef and describe the food as great and tasty, while others find meals inedible or tasteless. Operational issues such as long dining waits are noted, and at least one review mentions long dining-room wait times tied to staffing. Several reviewers say there are not enough in-house activities, indicating an area for programming improvement.

Management and communication: Management receives divergent comments. Some reviewers praise management and an Administrative Director for being engaged and trying to improve operations. Conversely, significant criticisms include allegations that administration is uncaring, ignores family concerns, or misrepresents staffing levels (e.g., CNA numbers). There are also complaints about misleading marketing, such as photos or "chef-inspired" claims that reviewers felt did not match reality. These administrative issues contribute to distrust among some families and could exacerbate problems arising from understaffing.

Safety and serious concerns: The reviews contain several serious red flags around resident safety and neglect: residents reportedly left unattended in wheelchairs for long periods, residents begging for help, transfers that apparently saved lives, and reports of being kept in bed for extended periods. These incidents, combined with slow response times and alleged understaffing, create clear safety concerns that prospective residents and families should investigate further.

Patterns and takeaways: The dominant pattern is one of inconsistency — high-quality care and excellent rehab experiences for many residents, paired with operational failures, staffing shortfalls, and administrative problems for others. Positive aspects most commonly praised are the rehabilitation team, many compassionate caregivers, and the facility’s physical environment when maintained. Negative aspects most often cited are understaffing, slow response to call lights, cleanliness lapses, food quality variability, and problematic administration or communication.

Given these mixed reports, anyone considering The Healthcare Resort Of Colorado Springs should weigh the facility’s strong rehab reputation and reports of caring staff against the recurring accounts of staffing shortages, slow assistance, cleanliness issues, and administrative concerns. A careful onsite visit, conversations with current families and the therapy team, direct observation during meal and shift-change times, and verification of staffing ratios and incident history would help clarify whether the aspects most important to a prospective resident are reliably met.

About The Healthcare Resort Of Colorado Springs

The Healthcare Resort Of Colorado Springs sits at 2818 Grand Vista Circle, right at the base of Pike's Peak, and you get some pretty nice views of the mountains from the building, which is laid out in a way that makes it very easy to move around, especially if you use a wheelchair or walker, thanks to the wide hallways and main floor design. The facility has a reputation in the Colorado Springs area for keeping everything clean and well maintained, and they offer fully furnished private suites. Residents can choose from assisted living, independent living, memory care, and short- or long-term rehabilitation services, so there's a range of options whether someone needs day-to-day help, recovery from surgery, or a safe place that can handle dementia and Alzheimer's needs in both secure and open settings.

The place aims for a resort-like atmosphere, so residents and guests get nutritious meals made from fresh, seasonal ingredients, and there's Wi-Fi, high-speed internet, and accommodations for pets. There's a dining option meant to make meals enjoyable and healthy while keeping in mind various dietary needs, which is nice for people who have special requirements. A dedicated professional staff led by Mr. Royal Jensen works on making every resident's experience as smooth as possible, and the team includes nurses, therapists, and clinicians who are around to help with personal care, rehabilitation, rehabilitation therapy like speech and occupational therapy, and managing medication, bathing, or dressing if needed.

There's also a strong family focus with support groups for dementia caregivers and regular involvement in the Alzheimer's Association's art therapy program, which brings creative activities to the residents. The environment has been described as both friendly and professional, with plenty of staff who go out of their way to help and bring a positive mood to the community. People can access both short-term rehabilitation suites and longer-term care units, and the aim seems to be to deliver healthcare alongside hospitality, with staff trying to meet both medical and social needs without the place feeling too much like a hospital. The management is part of The Ensign Group and is recognized within the state's health care association, providing coverage for Medicare and all major insurances. The Healthcare Resort keeps a presence online through Facebook, and though it's rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau, the facility isn't officially BBB accredited.
