    Caring staff but management failures

I lived in a small, homelike community (~10 residents) with caring, patient staff, homecooked meals, communal dining, daily activities (music, drawing, exercise), outdoor walks, and attentive medical/medication support - counselors Joe and Mary were especially professional and helpful. Unfortunately I also experienced verbal abuse by a caregiver, neglect from overworked staff, lack of supervision, and an unresponsive owner/GM (they ghosted; police were involved), with possible racial bias - I plan to report to the Department of Labor. I'm grateful for the companionship and support but recommend with caution because of those serious management and conduct issues.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is mixed but strongly polarized: several reviewers emphasize a warm, small, homelike community with attentive, compassionate care and a robust activities program, while other reviews report serious concerns about staff conduct, neglect, and management responsiveness.

Facilities, dining, and social environment: Multiple reviewers describe TenderCare as a small (about 10 residents) facility with a family-like atmosphere. Positive comments repeatedly note homecooked meals and communal dining, which contribute to a sense of community. The facility is described as having a large common living area/great room with a big-screen TV and outdoor yard/sidewalks that facilitate walks and outdoor time. Reviewers highlight a diverse activities program — exercise sessions, sing-alongs, crafts, art opportunities, music, and even themed events like football with snacks — and report residents are engaged, offered companionship, and not left alone.

Care quality and day-to-day staff interactions: Several reviewers praise the care as attentive and exemplary, mentioning medication assistance, long-term care planning, insurance guidance, and specific staff members (Joe and Mary) as being professional and compassionate. Expressions of strong gratitude (one reviewer called the experience an "answered prayer") and recommendations reflect positive, high-quality experiences for some residents and families.

Serious concerns about staff behavior and management: Contrasting the positive accounts are serious allegations that cannot be ignored. Some reviews report unprofessional interactions (e.g., staff using pet names such as "Sweetie" in a way the reviewer found offensive) and at least one allegation of racial discrimination tied to a resident's skin tone. More severe allegations include verbal abuse by a caregiver, neglect, and lack of adequate supervision — concerns amplified by claims that staff are overworked. There is also mention of police involvement related to an incident and at least one reviewer stating an intent to report the situation to the Department of Labor. These reports suggest inconsistency in staff behavior and supervision and raise red flags about incident handling and resident safety.

Management responsiveness and accountability: A recurring operational concern is management unresponsiveness. Multiple reviewers described the owner and general manager as unresponsive or as having "ghosted" them; one reviewer specifically noted the GM failed to arrive for a scheduled interaction. These management issues are tied in the negative feedback to the handling (or perceived mishandling) of staff misconduct and supervisory shortfalls. Where reviewers experienced strong, compassionate care, they also frequently cited specific caring staff members; where they experienced problems, they pointed to a lack of timely, effective managerial intervention.

Patterns and implications: The most consistent pattern is a bifurcated experience: families who connect with the nurturing aspects of a small, home-style setting report positive outcomes — close attention, meaningful activities, and helpful staff — while other families report troubling lapses in professionalism, supervision, and responsiveness from leadership. The small size and family atmosphere that benefit many residents may also make the community more vulnerable to the effects of a few problematic staff or management decisions. Given the gravity of some complaints (verbal abuse, neglect, alleged discrimination, police involvement), these are significant concerns that stand alongside multiple affirmations of good care.

In summary, TenderCare demonstrates clear strengths in creating a homelike, activity-rich environment with dedicated caregivers and individualized attention for some residents. However, there are substantive, recurring complaints about staff conduct, neglect, potential discrimination, and management unresponsiveness that prospective residents and families should weigh carefully. The reviews indicate uneven experiences: strong positives in daily life and activities for some, and serious administrative and behavioral issues for others.

    About TenderCare Assisted Living

TenderCare Assisted Living has three small residential homes for older adults in Denver, Colorado, with locations in Harvey Park, Pinehurst, and University Hills, and at each home, you'll find private rooms for every resident, most with their own bathrooms and a few with shared options, along with secure entrances, door locks, and alarms for safety. Each home holds up to eight residents, so the staff, including two caregivers during the day and one at night, can give close support with tasks like bathing, dressing, meals, laundry, housekeeping, and help with activities of daily living. The owner, who's a practicing critical care nurse, is there to oversee care plans and make sure everyone gets just what they need, and you'll notice that doctors, dentists, podiatrists, and therapists visit regularly, which many families appreciate, and since the homes have an emergency call system with buttons and mats for falls, residents and their loved ones tend to feel a bit more at ease.

TenderCare at Pinehurst, along with the other locations, offers assisted living, memory care for people with Alzheimer's and other dementias, respite care for short-term stays, daily medication help, help with incontinence at no added charge unless supplies like Depends are used, and support for those who have physical challenges or tough behaviors. Home health and hospice care can come in when needed, but there's no skilled nursing staff on site, though the team does work with outside nurses if care ramps up. Residents live month-to-month with a 30-day notice and no age restrictions, but Medicaid payments aren't taken, which is something to consider. Meal preparation, activities like music, arts and crafts, bingo, and even visits from children are all part of the weekly schedule, and regular outings in the landscaped outdoor areas with flowers and covered seating give a pleasant break in the day, along with pet dogs or birds sometimes allowed if everyone agrees.

Every home's been updated to be comfortable, social spaces have been renovated, and the facilities aim to give a warm, home-like feel, with a focus on meaningful relationships and steady support. People can schedule a tour Monday through Friday to see amenities and understand the daily routine, and the community has both independent and assisted living options, plus memory care, home care, nursing home services, and continuing care services. Residents get health monitoring, guidance on nutrition, and can join in therapy sessions if needed, with everything set up to offer steady, respectful help in a smaller, quieter setting right in Denver.
