    Kind caregivers but safety concerns

My experience was mixed. Many nurses and aides were kind, professional and supportive, the older building was clean with good activities and 24-hour nursing, but chronic understaffing, slow fall-alarm response, inconsistent/wrongful care (including hygiene and theft concerns), billing/Medicare problems and rude employees left me worried about safety and management. I'm grateful for the good caregivers I saw, but I can't fully recommend the place without confirming recent improvements.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment about Northbrook Healthcare And Rehabilitation Center is highly mixed, with strong positive experiences described by many families and residents alongside severe negative allegations from others. Several reviewers emphasize that the facility is older but well maintained: common positive remarks include cleanliness, absence of unpleasant odors, and clear hallways. Many families praise the staff as kind, patient, courteous, well-trained, and generally happy, noting round-the-clock nursing coverage and supportive nurses who communicate well with families. Multiple reviewers report concrete improvements in residents’ well-being — weight gain, improved mood, and increased laughter — and express satisfaction with choosing Northbrook. Social programming receives frequent positive mentions: weekly events, happy hours, daily exercise, live entertainment, bingo, and newspaper-reading groups contribute to an active atmosphere for many residents.

Staff performance is a central and polarized theme. On the positive side, reviewers describe compassionate, professional, and attentive staff and administrators who create a safe and healing environment; some families recount exceptionally caring gestures from nurses and high praise for leadership and team dedication. Conversely, a number of reviews raise serious concerns: understaffing, slow responses to fall alarms, multiple falls, rude or negative attitudes by certain employees, and reports of inconsistent care quality. This split suggests variability in staff performance and possible staffing-level fluctuations that materially affect resident experience.

Facility and safety issues also show a stark contrast in reviewer experience. Several comments describe a tidy, well-kept facility, but other reviews allege severe sanitation and neglect problems — including reports of feces and urine in rooms and staff refusal to change diapers — which, if accurate, are critical and alarming. There are also reports of theft (e.g., a stolen jacket) and broader safety concerns. The presence of both positive cleanliness claims and extreme sanitation allegations points to highly inconsistent conditions across different units, shifts, or time periods.

Management and administrative matters are another area of division. Some reviewers single out a caring, attentive administrator and praise strong leadership and progressive changes. Others criticize management harshly for delayed payments, reportedly poor business practices (such as not honoring late fees), and call the management “horrible” or advise others to avoid the facility. Financial and administrative pain points include mention of Medicare claim issues and an extra furniture fee ($5/day) for outdated furnishings — practical matters that affect resident families directly.

Patterns and overall impression: the reviews depict a facility capable of providing high-quality, compassionate care and meaningful activities when staffed and managed well, but also vulnerable to episodes of neglect, poor administration, and safety lapses. The divergence between glowing family testimonials and severe negative allegations suggests inconsistency in service delivery—either across different times or different parts of the facility. For prospective residents and families, this means due diligence is important: ask specific questions about current staffing levels, fall response protocols, sanitation practices, recent regulatory inspections, handling of complaints, security measures for personal items, and billing/Medicare support. In summary, Northbrook demonstrates strengths in social programming, some strong caregiving teams, and an active community environment, but reviewers also report serious, sometimes alarming failures in care, management, and safety that warrant careful investigation before choosing the facility.

About Northbrook Healthcare And Rehabilitation Center

Northbrook Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, provides nursing home and assisted living services for seniors and has both semi-private and private rooms, with monthly rates ranging from $4,500 to $7,500, and offers a wide range of healthcare support such as nurses, wound care, medication management, and therapies like occupational, physical, and speech therapy, which is helpful for those recovering from strokes or needing long-term care. Residents have access to personal care like bathing, dressing, grooming, and support with walking or wheelchairs, and the center takes care of individual needs with personalized care plans made alongside families who want to stay involved, and always tries to create a warm, welcoming, and home-like environment where being friendly and kind is important to both staff and residents.

Dining services here mean meals are provided in shared dining rooms, and the staff pay attention to nutrition as well as meal enjoyment, which has even earned awards for Best Meals and Dining; there are also active programs for socializing, such as arts and crafts, educational sessions, health activities, devotional events, and plenty of offsite outings that keep people engaged since the community is known for having the Best Activities and values making new memories in later years. For medical support, Northbrook provides podiatry on-site, manages incontinence and diabetic care, helps non-ambulatory residents, and offers regular transportation for appointments or activities, and the team encourages families to ask about different healthcare choices, staff ratios, and to review all licensing and inspection reports before making a decision, because it's important to know about staffing, care levels, and potential payment options, including long-term care insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid.

The center sits at 6420 Council St NE and comes with a total of 130 certified beds but an average daily census of about 67 residents, which gives everyone a little space; property features include housekeeping, game and activity rooms, kitchens and kitchenettes, maintenance staff, guest parking, cable TV in rooms, WiFi and internet, washer and dryer access, along with safety help like handrails, handicap features, and fire sprinkler systems that are all standard for nursing homes. The facility has had some deficiencies during inspections, with reports mentioning things like not fully protecting residents' rights to dignity or self-determination and several environmental issues with safety and cleanliness, and while there's been no actual harm found, the reports showed a potential for harm that families might want to be aware of, with 40 deficiencies and two infection-related deficiencies for not stopping the spread of infections, and a higher-than-average nurse turnover rate at 66.7 percent and a slightly lower nurse staffing rate than the state average, which is something that might matter for people considering this facility.

Northbrook is a for-profit limited liability company owned by Dovid Glenn, Isaac Labkovsky, and Moshe Neiman, and is affiliated with Cypress Healthcare La, plus it is active with the Iowa Health Care Association, Iowa Center for Assisted Living, and the Iowa Center for Home Care, and the staff encourage families to come for a tour or do a virtual visit and suggest checking inspection results or discussing financial options before moving in, to make sure the facility meets a person's specific needs and that everyone's comfortable with the level of care offered.
