    Caring staff but operational issues

I live at Creston and appreciate the caring leadership, compassionate team, positive culture, and staff dedication - nurses are even earning RN licenses and residents are clearly well taken care of (outstanding annual survey). That said, the food is often poor (mushy broccoli, shoe-leather pork chops, watered-down mac 'n' cheese), prescriptions seem overpriced, and response to calls for help can be slow - an operational/inspection review would help. Overall, amazing, super-nice staff - congratulations to Team Creston.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is strongly positive about the people and culture at Creston Specialty Care, with repeated praise for leadership, staff compassion, and overall care for residents. Multiple comments explicitly state that residents are well taken care of and that staff are caring and friendly. The facility appears to support professional development, as reviewers note nurses earning RN licenses, and there is explicit recognition of a dedication to quality of care and positive organizational growth.

Staff and management receive the most consistent praise. Reviewers describe the leadership as caring and highlight a compassionate team and positive culture. A number of individual remarks—such as 'super nice staff' and congratulations to 'Team Creston' for an outstanding annual survey—underscore that the facility performs well in regulatory or quality assessments and that staff morale and commitment are visible to reviewers. The references to professional advancement (nurses obtaining RN licenses) further reinforce the impression of a supportive, development-focused environment.

At the same time, several specific operational concerns were raised repeatedly. Dining quality is a clear pain point: reviewers use concrete examples such as mushy broccoli, pork chops described as 'like shoe leather,' and mac-and-cheese characterized as watered down. These detailed complaints suggest a consistent dissatisfaction with meal preparation and food quality rather than isolated incidents. Medication-related costs are also flagged as an issue, with multiple mentions of prescriptions being overpriced. Another operational concern is responsiveness: some reviewers reported slow responses when residents asked for help, which points to potential staffing, workflow, or communication gaps during care delivery.

There is also at least one comment calling for an audit or inspection, indicating that some reviewers believe a formal review of processes or compliance might be warranted. This contrasts with the positive note about an outstanding annual survey; together these observations suggest mixed perceptions about regulatory or quality oversight—most see strong performance, but a minority wants further review or transparency.

In summary, the dominant theme across reviews is confidence in the people at Creston Specialty Care: engaged leadership, compassionate and friendly staff, and a culture that fosters professional growth and appears committed to resident care. Operational weaknesses are focused and concrete: meal quality, prescription pricing, and response times. These are recurring enough in the reviews to be notable areas for attention. The combination of a strong staff culture and clear, specific operational complaints suggests that addressing those targeted service issues could materially improve overall satisfaction while preserving the facility’s evident strengths in care and team performance.

    About Creston Specialty Care

Creston Specialty Care sits at 1001 Cottonwood Road in Creston, Iowa, and serves older adults who need skilled nursing or long-term care, and the people there seem to take their jobs seriously because they focus on care that fits each person, whether someone needs short-term rehabilitation or long-term support for chronic conditions, so you'll find staff on hand 24 hours a day looking after up to 74 residents, and the staff includes registered nurses, LPNs, CNAs, therapy teams, and medical directors who work together. People can get help with pain management, wound care, IV antibiotics, and medication plans, and there's physical, occupational, and speech therapy offered right onsite; folks living there can use meal programs and there are daily social and educational activities, which keep things from being dull, while specialized services like nutrition and dietary counseling and restorative care try to make life more comfortable for those with specific medical needs, like respiratory care or orthopedic rehab. The nursing home has a long history of providing compassionate care and doesn't boast about fancy awards but has gotten inspection grades like C and some A+ health inspections in recent years with no severe issues found, showing some attention to safe and steady practices. The place is non-profit, part of Care Initiatives, affiliated with networks like IA Health Care Association, and linked to Providence Health Plan and Trinity Health Plan, so they take Medicare and Medicaid, which matters for costs. People can get help whether it's short rehab after an injury, long-term care for ongoing illnesses, or even hospice and end-of-life support, and there are also respite care and both inpatient and outpatient rehab. The community tries to make folks feel comfortable and engaged with recreational therapy and active daily schedules, and while it does have multiple locations in Iowa, not all are taking new patients. There's a dedicated webpage on CareInitiatives.org with current details about the facility. There's no telehealth but the office is open Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. The staff speaks several languages, though it doesn't say which ones, and they focus on making sure residents keep their dignity and as much independence as possible, aiming to support the residents and their families through every stage of care.
