    Great care, worrying leadership issues

I appreciated the warm, home-like community - caring, attentive staff, great food, engaging activities and well-kept grounds that gave me real peace of mind. However I noticed high staff turnover and troubling management issues (an unreliable director, reports of theft/fraud, a state investigation and occasional cleanliness lapses) that made me uneasy. Overall the hands-on care is excellent, but the leadership concerns temper my recommendation.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Bickford of Davenport are predominantly positive, emphasizing compassionate, resident-focused care, strong dementia programming, an engaging activities schedule, and a welcoming, home-like environment. Most reviewers highlight the staff as the facility’s greatest strength — many call caregivers caring, attentive, and willing to go the extra mile. Multiple reviewers singled out individual employees by name (Miranda, Kayla, Heather and others) and described meaningful impacts on residents’ quality of life. There is repeated praise for the facility’s responsiveness to families, including quick issue resolution and use of direct communication (text numbers) to keep families informed.

Care quality and memory care: A recurring theme is the facility’s emphasis on dementia and Alzheimer’s training. Reviewers describe an approach based on redirection and minimizing stimuli, and several note improvement or stability in memory and engagement resulting from stimulating, appropriately challenging activities. The attached memory unit and small size were seen as advantages by many families, along with reports of residents becoming more active and socially engaged. End-of-life care received specific commendation — reviewers described final days as comfortable and pain-free and expressed gratitude for staff dedication during those times.

Staff, culture, and activities: Staff dedication and a family-like atmosphere are central positives. Many reviewers reported that staff are warm, welcoming, and professional. The activities director is frequently praised as outgoing and effective at involving residents. Daily programs, varied activities, and resident-centered events appear consistent and well-received. Several reviews call out the food as excellent and home-cooked, with memorable items (blueberry muffins) being cited. The property itself — courtyard, pet-friendly policies, and pleasant surroundings — reinforces the home-like environment. Reviewers also noted that the facility size feels comfortable and appropriate, with good access to the memory unit from assisted living quarters.

Facilities, cleanliness, and dining: Numerous reviewers complimented clean, spacious rooms, a lovely building, and good communal spaces such as dining and meeting rooms. The dining program receives repeated positive mentions for taste and quality. However, there are also isolated complaints about housekeeping consistency — specifically, infrequent bathroom cleaning and dirt in some apartments. Several reviewers suggested that light housekeeping is included but that additional housekeeping services may be needed depending on individual expectations.

Management and operational concerns: While leadership and management receive strong praise in many reviews (described as trusted, strong, and responsive), there are a small number of significant negative comments that stand in contrast. A few reviews allege serious problems including a reported state investigation and raw sewage in kitchen and resident rooms, and some mention theft, fraud, or poor management and high staff turnover. These allegations appear to be isolated relative to the volume of positive feedback but are serious enough that they warrant verification by prospective residents and families. One reviewer also noted a negative sentiment about a director/management appointment, indicating that experiences with leadership can vary.

Communication and family involvement: Communication with families is frequently described as a strength. Families reported receiving timely updates, direct contact information, and reassurance from staff. Reviewers appreciated the facility’s willingness to include families in care and to be responsive when issues arise. A Place For Mom guidance was mentioned positively by one reviewer, suggesting effective coordination during placement.

Patterns and recommendations: In synthesis, most reviewers describe Bickford of Davenport as a warm, well-run community with strong dementia care practices, attentive and compassionate staff, good food, and active programming. The most commonly flagged operational concerns are inconsistent housekeeping and a few isolated but serious allegations that should be investigated further by anyone considering placement. Prospective families should take advantage of in-person tours (which many reviewers found positive), ask detailed questions about housekeeping schedules, staff turnover, and any recent investigations or complaints, and confirm the facility’s dementia-care training and staffing ratios. It would also be prudent to verify licensing and inspection records and to speak directly with current families when possible.

Bottom line: The prevailing picture is of a caring, resident-focused community that delivers meaningful daily engagement and compassionate care, especially for residents with memory needs. Most reviewers felt comfortable recommending Bickford of Davenport and credited staff and leadership for creating a welcoming, home-like environment. The small number of serious negative reports should be treated as red flags to be checked during the decision process, but they do not reflect the broader tenor of positive reviews emphasizing dedicated caregivers, good food, attractive grounds, and strong communication with families.
