    Friendly staff but denied funeral

I appreciated the friendly, caring staff, fun activities, and great food. However, I was deeply disappointed when some staff were unhelpful and hostile — showing a lack of compassion and refusing to help me attend my daughter's funeral.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the provided reviews is mixed and somewhat polarized: several comments praise the staff, activities, and dining, while other comments raise serious concerns about staff attitude and compassion. Positive remarks emphasize warm, friendly, and caring interactions, enjoyable programming, and good meals. However, negative remarks focus on perceived unhelpfulness and hostility from some staff members, with one particularly serious allegation that a resident was not assisted in attending their daughter's funeral. Taken together, these themes suggest variability in resident and family experiences at Pocahontas Manor rather than a uniformly positive or negative picture.

Care quality and staff behavior are the most prominent and contested topics. On the positive side, multiple reviewers call the staff caring, wonderful, and friendly, implying that many residents and families encounter attentive and supportive caregivers. These comments reflect positively on day-to-day personal care and interpersonal interactions for a portion of the facility’s clientele. Conversely, other reviewers describe staff as unhelpful, hostile, or lacking in compassion. The allegation that staff provided no assistance for a resident to attend an immediate family funeral is a specific and serious concern; it highlights a potential failure in responsiveness and compassion that would be distressing for families and could indicate gaps in policy, training, or staffing. Because both positive and negative staff characterizations appear, a reasonable interpretation is inconsistent staff performance—some employees provide excellent care while others fall short of expectations.

Facilities, activities, and dining receive predominantly positive mentions. "Fun activities" and "great food" are explicit positives in the reviews, suggesting that social programming and meal quality are strengths and contribute to resident satisfaction for many. These aspects typically impact quality of life and indicate the facility invests in engagement and culinary services. The phrase "highly recommended" and other favorable staff descriptors reinforce that several reviewers would endorse the facility based on their experiences, which is important for prospective residents evaluating day-to-day living and community atmosphere.

Notable patterns and concerns center on inconsistency and the potential for emotionally consequential lapses. The coexistence of strong praise and sharp criticism points to uneven experiences across different shifts, teams, or individual staff members. The presence of allegations about hostility and lack of compassion—particularly around a family bereavement—warrants attention because it can significantly affect trust between families and the facility. These issues may stem from staff training, staffing levels, leadership and culture, or isolated incidents; the reviews do not provide enough detail to determine the root cause, but they do indicate that management should investigate and address variability in staff behavior and responsiveness.

In summary, Pocahontas Manor appears to offer several real strengths—friendly and caring staff (per many reviewers), engaging activities, and good food—that lead some families to highly recommend the facility. At the same time, serious negative reports about unhelpfulness, perceived hostility, and a lack of compassion for at least one family create a countervailing concern about consistency and reliability of care. Prospective residents and families should weigh these mixed signals, consider asking the facility about staff training, bereavement and emergency policies, and seek recent, specific references to better understand whether the positive experiences are typical and how the facility addresses the types of serious concerns raised in the reviews.

    About Pocahontas Manor

Pocahontas Manor gives support for seniors who want a safe and caring place to live, and you'll find staff available at all times if someone needs help getting from the bed to a wheelchair or has an emergency during the day or night, which means families know their loved ones have round-the-clock care and help if they need it. The community handles diabetes care and will monitor insulin levels, and the nurses can provide medical assistance like wound care, incontinence care, and even respiratory treatments, so people with different needs can get help without having to move somewhere else. Pocahontas Manor gives options for assisted living, memory care, dementia care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, hospice care, and independent living, with different treatment plans and therapies made for each person, and because of that, everyone can have a plan that fits what they want and need.

Residents can stay in private rooms and choose from living in the apartment building or the mobile home park, with access to indoor spaces where people can gather and spend time together, so nobody has to feel lonely. There are meal services with nutritious food, and the dining options let people relax at meal times with their neighbors, since eating together can be so comforting when folks are far from family or old friends. Daily activities happen indoors and offsite, including art and craft classes, bingo, cooking groups, table games, animal therapy, and other ways to keep busy, so people can keep their minds active and spirits up. The staff help with hygiene, dressing, and getting around, but encourage everyone to join in when they're able, so people stay as independent as possible and can enjoy life. People who need extra therapies like physical, speech, or occupational therapy can access them onsite, and if families or residents need to know more, they can use the PurpledoorFinders©2025 Purple Door, LLC resource to find out about the community or support services.

Pocahontas Manor tries to meet not only physical health needs but spiritual and emotional ones too, with devotional activities, a beauty salon, and community outreach programs, plus pet-friendly policies for people who feel better with an animal nearby. Staff can help with subacute care, restorative rehabilitation, housekeeping, and transportation, too, so residents get most of their daily needs taken care of without having to leave the property, and people spend less time worrying, more time doing the things they enjoy.
