    Comfortable social living with caveats

I live here and overall I'm very happy. The location, bright dining room and three meals a day from an excellent kitchen, plus abundant activities, outings and on-site therapy, make life easy and social. Staff are warm and helpful, grounds and common areas are well maintained, and services like transportation and housekeeping are included. Downsides: apartments are a bit small, food can be inconsistent, housekeeping/management sometimes lag, and it's not suitable for those needing assisted care - I'd recommend it for active, independent seniors.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Holiday Illahee Hills are predominantly positive with a clear pattern: residents and family members repeatedly praise the staff, communal atmosphere, food (often described as chef-driven and restaurant-style), and the breadth of activities and amenities. The facility is positioned and reviewed primarily as an independent living community that delivers a social, maintenance-free lifestyle with three meals per day, transportation, housekeeping, and many onsite services. Many residents report feeling safe, welcome, and well-cared-for; several reviewers explicitly describe a "family-like" community and highlight staff members by name for their responsiveness and compassion.

Staff and care quality: One of the strongest and most consistent themes is staff friendliness and helpfulness. Numerous reviewers call out specific employees (e.g., Jess/Jessica, Denyse/Denyce, Greg) and describe staff as attentive, quick to solve problems, and instrumental in smoothing moves and transitions. Maintenance responsiveness and staff that know residents by name are frequently noted. That said, there are recurring caveats: some reviewers report staffing instability, turnover, or low pay that affects continuity; others say staff follow-through can be inconsistent. Importantly, the community is repeatedly described as independent-living focused — it generally does not provide 24/7 nursing or assisted-living levels of care. Several reviewers warn that the facility is not appropriate for people who need hands-on help (e.g., cannot always assist with a fallen resident) or for those with advanced dementia; outside/home-health aides and contracted services are used when more care is required.

Facilities and apartments: Physical facilities receive mostly positive comments: common areas, dining hall, grounds, and renovated spaces are often described as clean, attractive, and well-maintained. There are reports of recent remodeling in parts of the building and a number of reviewers praise the pleasant landscaping and walking paths. Apartment options are varied (studios through two-bedrooms) and some units have patios or balconies. However, apartment size and features draw mixed feedback: while some suites are called spacious and well-laid-out, many reviewers note smaller studios/one-bedrooms with limited kitchenettes or no full kitchen. Carpeting, some dated rooms, ongoing renovations, and occasional unpleasant smells in hallways are mentioned by several reviewers. Parking (no covered parking in some areas) and the hillside location causing slick-day concerns were raised in a few reviews.

Dining and food: Dining is a major selling point for many residents: the facility offers three meals daily in a restaurant-like dining room, with many reviewers praising the chef, variety, presentation, and personalization of meals. At the same time, there is a significant minority thread reporting a decline in food quality after COVID or describing inconsistent meal execution (burnt or cold items, menu not matching served items, limited choices). Some residents are very satisfied with portion sizes and special-diet accommodations (gluten-free, strict diets), while others miss specific menu items and desire more variety. The upshot is that dining is generally strong but inconsistent across time and reviewers — a key area to probe on tour and with current residents.

Activities, social life, and transportation: The community's activity programming is frequently highlighted as robust and varied: daily activities, holiday parties, exercise classes, arts and crafts, card games, Wii bowling, live entertainment, movie nights, and off-site bus outings are commonly mentioned. Reviewers describe a lively social environment with plenty of engagement options and opportunities to form friendships — often likening the atmosphere to "a cruise ship on land." Transportation to medical appointments and local shopping is routinely provided (often complimentary within an approximate radius), which reviewers value highly.

Management, tours, and communication: Tour experiences and management impressions are mixed but tend toward positive. Many reviewers compliment tour staff and office communication, describing welcoming, candid, and thorough tours with invitations to dine during visits. Conversely, some prospective residents felt rushed or pressured during tours or described a sales-focused approach. Reviews also indicate variability in management performance: several people praise facility managers for transparency and responsiveness, while others report poor management, surprise charges, price increases, and weak follow-through. A few reviews allege deceptive marketing (staged photos or fake reviews), which suggests checking multiple references and current resident feedback before committing.

Costs, fees, and eligibility: Pricing perceptions are mixed. Many reviewers find the community affordable and good value for independent living on a fixed income, particularly given the inclusion of meals and utilities. However, other reviewers call attention to rising rents, surprise charges, and pricing differences among apartment types; some note that all-inclusive fees can feel wasteful if services go unused. The community generally operates on private-pay arrangements and reviewers note limited or no acceptance of Medicaid/Medicare for housing — applicants should confirm payment terms and any extra service fees up front.

Health services and partnerships: The community partners with therapy providers and offers on-site PT/OT and occasional clinics (podiatry, BP checks). Some reviewers reported daily or frequent PT for residents. Still, the facility is not a step-up or skilled nursing setting; those needing higher levels of medical monitoring should plan for outside home-health or assisted-living transition. Onsite RN availability appears variable (outsourced RN visits), and family members should verify the exact clinical support model.

Patterns and recommendations: The dominant pattern is a warm, social independent-living community with strong activity programming, generally good food and dining, and compassionate staff who make residents feel at home. Major caveats center on: (1) confirming whether the apartment size and kitchenette layout meet specific needs; (2) evaluating current dining quality and housekeeping reliability; (3) assessing the facility’s ability to support any escalating care needs; and (4) clarifying all costs, policies on rent increases, and what services are included versus extra. Prospective residents should tour multiple times (including at mealtime), speak with long-term residents, ask about recent staffing changes, and get written details on fees and care limits. For independent seniors seeking social engagement, maintenance-free living, and included dining/transportation, Holiday Illahee Hills scores highly in many reviews. For individuals needing more hands-on clinical care, more frequent housekeeping, or larger in-unit kitchens, this community may be less suitable.

    About Holiday Illahee Hills

Holiday Illahee Hills sits on a hill with nice views of the countryside near Urbandale, Iowa, just outside West Des Moines and close to places like Mercy Medical Center and Valley West Mall, and does give you a peaceful feeling right when you drive up, looking out over the manicured lawns, landscaped gardens, and nearby fishing lakes and golf courses, and you'll usually hear people talking about the pleasant walking paths and quiet neighborhood, since the building is only two stories tall and sits among gardens, so you can sit out on a patio any warm day and watch the sun or just stroll around if you feel up for it. The community offers both apartments and cottages with one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and studio floor plans from about 310 to 686 square feet, and people can bring their pets and decorate how they want to make their space feel like home, and you'll see a mix of sleeping alcoves, patios, balconies, and kitchenettes, all with comfortable beds, dining tables, walk-in showers or tubs, safety rails in bathrooms, and individual thermostat controls for each unit, so you can keep your room the way you like it. There's the option for handicap barrier-free units and cottages too, which makes a difference for a lot of folks, and there's parking out in the lot and under some covered spaces, plus transportation for errands and doctor visits when you need it, which comes in handy if going out on your own is tough some days.

Inside, you'll find inviting lounges, a library, a beauty salon, chapel, fitness equipment, a game room, and a big entertainment room with a large screen TV where people get together to watch movies or play Wii golf, and there are common areas with things like a baby grand piano and decorative curio cabinets that give the place a cozy touch. Residents gather for meals in a dining room set with round tables, stylish chandeliers, and large windows, and three meals a day are cooked from scratch by the chefs, usually with a private room set aside if you want to celebrate something special or have guests over, and there's always a coffee pot going in the lounge, which is nice for visits throughout the day with friends. Weekly housekeeping, linen service, and a laundry room for residents are standard, so you don't have to worry about the big cleaning jobs, and there's WiFi in the common areas, a business center, and a locked mailbox system for privacy and security.

Holiday Illahee Hills keeps things social, so you'll find a steady list of activities like book clubs, art classes, poker or casino nights, card circles, and fitness classes, plus organized outings, field trips, and walks on the neighborhood trails, and all the while, people find it easy to meet each other because of all the shared spaces and events going on, and with community managers living on site, there's always someone around for extra support and 24-hour security. The community offers independent living for older adults aged 55 and up, and allows residents to hire home care agencies or third-party providers for whatever care or therapy they need, which can include skilled nursing, diabetes care, IV care, respiratory care, wound care, medication management, and therapy services, along with help from aides for dressing, bathing, grooming, or medication reminders, so the options go all the way from independent living to assisted living, skilled nursing, and even memory care with extra support for Alzheimer's or dementia, as all the different levels are right there on one campus.

The grounds include gardens, patios for outdoor dining or sitting, and lawn areas for walks, while many folks like to venture out to nearby Saylorville Lake or take part in the local fishing or golf, since transportation services make that possible. There's a feeling of comfort and flexibility, since people can arrange for all their support services right on-site using Home Instead or any outside providers, and all apartments include modern kitchenettes and cable TV, which makes daily life easier for everyone. Holiday Illahee Hills gives residents a steady routine, chances to stay active or social, and varying care options, in a peaceful setting just outside the city, which helps keep life straightforward while letting folks make the place feel like their own.
