    Neglect, rude staff, unsafe care

I had a terrible experience. The place is poorly run - rude administration, lazy/unresponsive nurses and CNAs, protocol non-compliance, awful communication and long hold times. Rooms are tiny and often shared two-to-a-room; rooms and common areas were dirty, belongings/money went missing, meds and care were delayed, which led to weight loss, dehydration, bed sores, prolonged wheelchair confinement and even injury. Transfers, billing and retrieval of belongings were a nightmare. A few therapists and some nurses were truly compassionate and excellent, but overall I would not recommend this facility - it feels unsafe and needs major management change.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is strongly mixed and highly polarized. Multiple reviewers praise the therapy and wound-care capabilities of Pontchartrain Health Care Center, often naming specific therapists (Tommy, Michelle, Emily, Beth) and describing effective wound management and successful healing. Several families highlight an in-house nurse practitioner, compassionate nursing staff (including named nurses Philesha and Angie), and supportive ancillary services such as an on-site beauty shop and a beloved hair stylist (Ms. B). Positive accounts frequently cite personalized, caring interactions, engaging activities (bingo, arts & crafts), restorative therapy offerings, and food that some describe as pretty good or very good. In these reports the facility can provide high-quality rehabilitation outcomes and compassionate day-to-day care, and multiple families explicitly state they would recommend or return to the facility.

Conversely, a substantial portion of reviews report serious and recurring concerns about basic care and safety. Several families allege medication delays and that residents were not woken for medicines; there are reports of residents going long periods (8+ hours) without nursing checks, resulting in dehydration and significant weight loss (one report cites ~9 pounds). Alarming claims include nursing assistants sleeping in hallways, broken beds, missing bed rails, and lack of wheelchairs, all raising safety issues. Bedsores, delayed or absent skin care, and at least one report linking facility conditions to worsening medical events (a knee injury, alleged stroke recurrence) underscore potentially severe consequences of the lapses described. Some reviews go as far as calling for the facility to be shut down and describe the environment as abusive, neglectful, or unsafe.

Facility condition and cleanliness are described inconsistently. Several reviewers explicitly state that the building is older but clean, well-maintained, and odor-free, while others describe an old, run-down physical plant with falling ceiling tiles, dirty walls, food on floors, and urine odors. This suggests variability across units, shifts, or time periods. Dining experiences are similarly split: some residents/families praise meal options and alternatives, while others complain about poor food quality.

Staffing, training, and management are recurring themes. Positive reports praise helpful, kind, and knowledgeable staff and administration, whereas negative reviews describe clueless or rude management, unresponsive social workers, reception and phone problems, and long hold times. Several reviews call out misinformation or confusion about residency requirements, referrals, and insurance coverage limits (for example, limited coverage to 20 days), and delays in retrieving residents' belongings after transfer. Multiple comments point to inexperienced staff, protocol non-compliance, and perceived laziness. Together these issues paint a picture of inconsistent administrative processes and communication breakdowns that materially affect families' experiences.

A clear pattern is the facility's inconsistent performance: the same center is credited with excellent therapy outcomes and compassionate care in some reports while accused of neglect and dangerous care in others. Named, high-performing clinicians and specific successful clinical teams (therapy and wound care) appear repeatedly in positive accounts, suggesting pockets of strong clinical competence. At the same time, safety lapses, delayed care, staffing concerns, and administrative failures are frequent and severe in a subset of reviews. This split could indicate variability between wings, shifts, or changes over time (some reviews mention a new administration), or inconsistent staffing and oversight.

For families evaluating Pontchartrain Health Care Center, the dominant takeaway is that experiences can vary dramatically. The facility demonstrates clear strengths in rehabilitation and wound care and has staff who provide compassionate, high-quality care for some residents. However, there are multiple and significant reports of neglect, safety hazards, poor communication, and administrative confusion that must be taken seriously. Prospective residents and families should ask specific, targeted questions about staffing levels, medication administration practices, wound-care processes, weekend/after-hours coverage, and how the facility handles belongings and transfers. A careful tour, direct conversations with therapy and nursing leadership, and reviewing recent state inspection and complaint records would help corroborate which aspects of care will be most relevant to an individual resident’s needs.
