About Larkin Chase Center - CLOSED

Larkin Chase Center in Bowie, Maryland was a for-profit skilled nursing facility that operated under Genesis Healthcare, with a 120-bed capacity, and was part of a larger health campus that included the UM Bowie Health Center Emergency Department, offering Level 2 emergency care, lab, and x-ray services, so residents got care day or night, seven days a week, and the place provided both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care, including hospice, palliative, and dementia services along with pain management, psychiatric care, IV therapy, colostomy and bariatric care, wound management, and cardiac programs, while also having occupational, physical, speech, and respiratory therapy for those recovering from illness or surgery, plus support for veterans through the We Honor Veterans program and an AHCA Bronze Quality Award for commitment to care, and the staff included specialists in rehabilitation and social work, and rooms came both private and shared, with features like air conditioning, kitchenettes, common and activity areas, gardens, beauty/barber shops, as well as amenities like wheelchair access, WiFi, phones, a full call system, and mail and newspaper service, so folks could have pets, and there were outings, movie nights, community activities, and garden spaces for those able, with meals fitting diabetic or allergy needs and full service for housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and medication management, and the staff helped with bathing, dressing, and other daily tasks while the transitional care unit and cardiac management program tried to help people get back on their feet if they were able, and the whole place was set up to handle a wide variety of medical and social needs for people of any age, though inspectors found issues like high physical restraint usage-several times the state average for long-stay residents-along with infection control violations, pressure ulcers in short-stay residents at about half the state and national averages, and a total of 16 deficiencies during its last health inspection, including quality of care and resident mistreatment problems, and with all that, they held a 3-star rating in quality measures, but just 2 stars for staffing and a 1-star overall Medicare rating, and the center had no nearby competition within four miles, accepted both Medicare and Medicaid, but is now closed, having once been part of a bigger campus that served everybody from newborns to seniors, all on 50 acres in suburban Prince George's County.
