    Warm well-run facility care concerns

I toured this small, homey assisted-living (8 residents per house) and liked the friendly, experienced staff, 24-hour care with licensed med-techs, on-call nurse and hospice/24-hour nursing assistant support. It's spacious, has cable in bedrooms, a separate family visit room, daily activities (walking/exercise, gardening, art therapy, piano sing-alongs), housekeeping/laundry, gourmet meals with weekly resident input, and transportation to the senior center/appointments; Medicaid/subsidy accepted. Accessibility is imperfect - unavoidable steps despite a stairglide and I couldn't fully assess the driveway/sidewalk because of leaves; owner mentioned a chair-lift drawback. No visiting hours, doors are locked/alarmed; private rooms coming soon but my dad would be in a shared room now. Price is about $3,400-3,500 with a one-month non-refundable deposit. Overall warm and well-run, but I remain worried whether staff can handle my dad's needs.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is positive about the personal, small-house model and the level of daily support available at Ivy Manor Normandy. Reviewers repeatedly highlight an experienced owner and caregivers with extensive eldercare backgrounds, a high caregiver-to-resident ratio, and a generally friendly, home-like atmosphere. The community operates as assisted living 24 hours a day, with licensed medication technicians, 24-hour nursing assistants, and an on-call nurse, which contributes to a perception of strong day-to-day medical oversight. Hospice care is available on-site and the facility accepts subsidies and Medicaid waivers, increasing accessibility for some families.

Care quality and staffing emerge as central strengths. The staffing mix noted in the summaries—licensed med techs, 24-hour nursing assistants, an on-call nurse, and ancillary services such as an art therapist—suggests a facility able to provide routine clinical oversight alongside therapeutic programming. Multiple reviewers praised housekeeping and laundry services, daily walking/exercise programs, and attentive meal service. The small-house layout (two houses, eight residents each) is repeatedly framed as conducive to individualized attention and a familial environment. That model is reinforced by specific conveniences such as flexible breakfasts, snacks, cable in bedrooms, a separate family visit room, and no visiting hours policy.

Facility amenities, activities, and dining receive strong mentions. Gourmet meals with weekly resident input, regular social and creative programming (art therapy, gardening, weekly piano sing-a-longs), and organized outings or bus rides to the nearby senior center and to medical appointments are all noted as routine offerings. These indicate a robust activity calendar and opportunities for social engagement and physical activity. The presence of a separate family visit room and generally clean, spacious interiors also add to the positive impressions.

However, there are consistent and concrete concerns to weigh. Accessibility is the most frequently noted drawback: the site has unavoidable steps, and while a stairglide/chair lift exists, reviewers described it as a drawback or insufficient for some needs. One reviewer specifically said they had concerns about whether staff could adequately handle their father, signaling potential limits in managing higher-acuity or challenging behaviors despite the 24-hour staff presence. Some practical issues were noted: at the time of the summaries some residents were in shared rooms (though a private room was becoming available), driveway/sidewalk visibility was obstructed by leaves (a sign of property maintenance concerns), and building entrances were described as locked and alarmed, which some saw as a security/accessibility tradeoff.

Cost and admissions policies are also explicit considerations. The reported monthly price range of $3,400–$3,500 and a one-month non-refundable deposit were called out by reviewers and may influence decision-making. While Medicaid waiver acceptance and subsidy support are positives for affordability, the out-of-pocket rate and deposit policy may be barriers for some families.

In summary, Ivy Manor Normandy appears to be a small, attentive assisted living option with a strong focus on personalized care, daily activities, and a home-like environment backed by licensed clinical staff and 24-hour coverage. Its strengths lie in staffing, therapeutic and social programming, meal quality with resident input, and on-site hospice and subsidy acceptance. The main limitations identified are accessibility challenges related to stairs and chair-lift use, some concerns about capacity to manage more demanding care needs, current shared-room arrangements for some residents, maintenance/visibility issues, and cost/deposit policies. Prospective families should weigh the benefits of the small-house, high-touch model and the available clinical staff against the physical-access limitations and verify staff experience with the specific care needs of their loved one during a site visit.

    About Ivy Manor Normandy

Ivy Manor Normandy sits in a quiet part of Ellicott City, Maryland, and has a calm, home-like setting for up to 8 residents at a time, so people will find things more personable and less crowded than big places, and while the staff's around twenty-four hours a day, there's always enough help with bathing, dressing, or moving from one place to another, and there's a usual mix of private, semi-private, or studio-style rooms with furnished options, shared bathrooms, and privacy taken seriously, plus wheelchair accessible showers. People can bring their own favorite things when they move in, and the staff helps set everything up, so the transition goes a bit easier. Ivy Manor Normandy has laundry, dry cleaning, and housekeeping, so residents don't have to worry about chores, and meals come from chefs who follow special diets, with vegetarian choices, snacks, and three homemade meals every day, and if someone needs spoon feeding or special care with diabetes or incontinence, the staff's trained and ready, plus there's support for memory care and short-term respite stays.

The community lets both men and women move in, and pets like cats and dogs can stay, but there are house rules, so the place stays safe and clean for everyone, and there's no smoking indoors. Transportation gets arranged for medical appointments, shopping trips, or outings, with a bus and staff supervision, and parking is available for residents who drive. When someone wants to be social, there's plenty to do-arts and crafts, Wii bowling, movie nights, fitness programs, reading rooms, garden walks, games, devotional services both onsite and offsite, music therapy, and even a small courtyard and greenhouse for people who enjoy fresh air, or just watching birds. Internet, cable TV, high-speed Wi-Fi, and large screen TVs let everyone stay connected or watch what they like in their own room or with the group. They run daily plans and schedules for activities, and the staff checks on health and well-being often, so adjustments to care can be made when needed.

Ivy Manor Normandy works with doctors, nurses, and therapists who visit, so residents get medication management, personal care assistance, speech, physical, and occupational therapy, routine health checks, and even podiatrist or dentist help when required, and hospice or aging-in-place care is available too. Residents with high levels of need get tailored care, and people with Alzheimer's or dementia receive special memory care services, all under supervision and with emergency alert systems for safety. The staff makes individual plans for each person, tries to keep things respectful, and sets up care based on routines and individual needs, with a focus on helping people stay independent as long as possible. There's a beauty and barber shop, a wellness area, and no smoking is allowed indoors to keep the air cleaner for everyone. Ivy Manor Normandy aims to be a place where seniors can live with support and comfort, get help when they need it, bring their pets, enjoy activities, and settle into a routine that suits them.
