    Caring staff, clean but pricey

I toured this community and eventually moved my mom in. The staff are overwhelmingly caring, attentive and organized; the building feels clean, homey and updated, with good restaurant-style dining, pets allowed and lots of activities and outings. Rooms range from studios to companion suites and memory care is on a secured floor, though some families reported odors, hygiene and activity inconsistency. Overall very welcoming and well run but it's on the pricey side and you should watch for extra fees and occasional communication gaps.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviewers overwhelmingly describe Sunrise of Frederick as a place with warm, compassionate staff and a strong, home-like community atmosphere. Many families praise the caregiving team as attentive, responsive, and professional; reviewers frequently note specific staff members and managers who go above and beyond, and many describe quick, proactive medical communication and advocacy. The combination of stable staffing, supportive move-in assistance, and an open-door administrative approach leads many families to recommend the community and report that their loved ones are happy and well cared for.

Care quality and staff: The dominant theme is positive: numerous reviewers highlight excellent nursing and medical care, reliable medication delivery, and caring attendants who form real bonds with residents. Several accounts describe staff as treating residents like family, offering bedside support, personalized care plans, and regular updates to families. Transportation and logistics support (e.g., help getting to doctor appointments) is commonly praised. That said, a subset of reviewers reported serious lapses: missed medication administration, insufficient feeding assistance, inadequate grooming, or residents appearing unclean. These negative accounts are less frequent but serious in nature, indicating an unevenness in care delivery for some residents and shifts in performance that families monitored closely.

Dining and food: Dining is one of Sunrise of Frederick's strongest and most consistent positives. Many reviewers describe restaurant-style dining, a daily-changing menu with multiple choices, nutritious options, homemade desserts, and a chef willing to accommodate requests and old favorites. Dining staff are often noted for taking personal interest in residents and accommodating allergies or special diets (including an iPad ordering system referenced). A minority of reviewers wanted fresher options or objected to specific menu items, but overall the dining experience is a pronounced strength and a major contributor to resident satisfaction.

Facilities and environment: The physical environment earns largely positive comments: bright, well-decorated common spaces, multiple lounges (including themed rooms like a soda/Coke room and a bistro area), library, game room, and inviting porches and sitting areas. The community is frequently described as clean, upbeat, and home-like rather than institutional. Pet-friendly amenities and therapy animals are appreciated and lend to a cozy atmosphere. However, several recurring facility concerns appear: apartment sizes (studios and one-bedrooms) are often described as small or cramped, some layouts are not wheelchair-friendly, and portions of the building (notably some memory care areas) have been reported as older or with occasional unpleasant odors. A few reviewers mentioned clutter or maintenance lapses in common areas.

Activities and engagement: Reviewers report a wide range of activities — exercise classes, day trips to restaurants and parks, reminiscing programs, gardening, bingo, music and sing-alongs, arts and crafts, and regular social events. Many residents seem engaged and happy with outings and varied programming. Yet there are also multiple comments about inconsistency: some activities are canceled, attendance can be low, and restrictions (COVID or otherwise) have limited scheduled programming at times. Families who prioritize highly structured or high-participation programming may notice variability in activity quality or availability.

Management, communication and billing: Communication and management receive mixed but generally favorable marks. Numerous reviewers praise proactive, open, and approachable leadership who listen and make adjustments. The community offers direct contacts and regular updates, and intake processes are noted as thorough. However, billing and fees are a recurring pain point for a notable minority: reviewers reported confusing billing, extra/hidden charges, unexpected price increases tied to promised improvements, and in a few serious cases disputes over refunds or post-death billing. Cost is also a common concern: while many families feel the price is fair for the level of service, others find Sunrise pricey or report charges that feel excessive.

Patterns and areas of concern: The most significant negative patterns are related to cleanliness/hygiene and inconsistent care in a minority of cases, and billing transparency. Several reports of residents being unkempt (infrequent showers, dirty diapers, unbrushed teeth) and allegations that care was prioritized around finances rather than resident dignity are serious red flags for any family evaluating the community. Memory care also draws mixed reactions: while some families praise memory-specific programs and secured units, others report odors, understaffing, or an institutional feel in those areas. Accessibility concerns — small rooms, narrow circulation in some places, and wheelchair-unfriendly layouts — are frequently called out and should be evaluated by families with mobility needs.

Bottom line: Sunrise of Frederick appears to deliver high-quality, compassionate care for many residents, with particularly strong dining, engaging common spaces, and an overall home-like culture supported by many dedicated staff members and managers. However, experiences are not uniform: a number of reviewers report troubling lapses in hygiene, inconsistent activity delivery, therapy delays, billing confusion, and space/accessibility constraints. Prospective residents and families should weigh the consistently praised aspects (staff warmth, medical responsiveness, dining, and community feel) against the documented concerns, visit multiple times, meet current residents and staff, carefully review contracts and billing practices, and, if possible, check recent inspection records or follow up on how the community addressed the specific cleanliness and billing issues mentioned by some families.
