    Caring staff but inconsistent care

I placed my mom here and I appreciate the beautiful, homey building, friendly and knowledgeable staff, excellent food, lots of activities and amenities, and the genuinely caring CNAs who give us real peace of mind. That said, staffing is inconsistent and understaffed at times - delayed call lights, nurse-station communication issues, and some unprofessional behavior (including a trainer who was intoxicated and lied before being fired) have been alarming. Family communication and transparency are weak, there have been service lapses (no Sunday meals, a weekend without central AC), and the monthly cost is high (~$6K). Overall the caregiving is often excellent, but be prepared to monitor staffing and insist on clear communication.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment for Aftenro Home is mixed but leans positive on facility quality, amenities, and the demeanor of many frontline caregivers, with significant and recurring concerns about staffing levels, communication, and a few serious isolated incidents. Multiple reviewers praise the physical environment — calling the building beautiful, clean and home-like — and highlight private rooms, walking paths, and a variety of on-site amenities (hairdresser, library, physical therapy room, convenience store). The dining program also receives consistent positive remarks: a well-planned dining room, good food, and competent dieticians and cooks. Activity programming and restored church services are noted as meaningful aspects that support resident social life and wellbeing.

Care quality and staff behavior form a central theme with contrasting reports. Numerous reviewers describe staff as friendly, compassionate, knowledgeable, and attentive, with several calling the caregiving team exceptional and a source of peace of mind. Management and certain employees are singled out for praise, and some reviewers state they consider Aftenro a good place to work — a factor that can support continuity of care. However, an opposing and significant thread concerns understaffing and low staff-to-resident ratios; these staffing pressures are tied to problems such as delayed call-light responses and nurse station communication failures. A few reviewers report unprofessional conduct by specific nursing staff, including allegations that staff avoided residents and a troubling claim of an intoxicated trainer who was allegedly deceptive and followed by abrupt termination. These serious allegations, while not reported universally, contribute to a pattern of inconsistent experience depending on shift, team, or timeframe.

Communication with families is another prominent dichotomy. Some reviews emphasize excellent, communicative staff who are responsive to needs and keep families informed. Conversely, multiple reviewers felt left in the dark: failures to return calls, lack of transparency, and poor staff-family communication were repeatedly mentioned. These mixed reports suggest variability in administrative follow-through or differences between individual staff members' communication practices. Management receives praise from some reviewers for being effective and service-oriented, yet other accounts imply that management did not address communication or staffing issues to families' satisfaction.

Operational and logistical concerns appear intermittently but are salient to affected reviewers. Specific incidents include a weekend without central air conditioning and at least one report claiming no meals were provided on a Sunday. Such events, while possibly isolated, were significant enough to be raised alongside ongoing complaints about understaffing. Cost is also a factor: a roughly $6,000 monthly fee was mentioned and viewed by some as high; other reviewers considered the facility reasonable or average in value given the care and amenities. Finally, COVID-19 related restrictions were noted as having impacted services in the past (for example, suspension and later restoration of church services), which is consistent with broader sector trends but still meaningful for prospective residents and families.

In summary, Aftenro Home appears to offer a well-maintained, amenity-rich environment with many compassionate and skilled caregivers, good food, and a home-like atmosphere that many families appreciate. At the same time, there are recurring and serious concerns about staffing adequacy, inconsistent communication with families, and at least a few troubling incidents of unprofessional behavior and service lapses. Prospective residents and their families would benefit from direct, up-to-date inquiries about current staffing levels and turnover, procedures for handling call lights and complaints, policies on AC/meal continuity during outages, and references from recent families to gauge how consistent the positive caregiver experiences are across shifts and over time.
