    Warm staff, peaceful campus, aging

My parent lives here and I'm very pleased overall - staff are warm, attentive and genuinely know residents, the place is clean and well maintained, and the small lakeside campus feels homey and peaceful. Activities are excellent (Becky the activity director is pure joy) with crafts, church services, outings and pontoon rides that really engage people. Care is customizable and unobtrusive, housekeeping and maintenance are strong, and pricing/waiver options make it good value. Downsides: the building is older with outdated kitchens (no dishwasher/garbage-disposal/microwave issues), occasional medication/communication hiccups, unclear lease/dual independent-assisted policies, and a recent management change was concerning. In short: great staff, friendly residents and location - just be aware of aging facilities and policy/amenity limitations.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive about the people, atmosphere, and lakeside setting at Elim Shores, with recurring praise for the staff, activities, and the sense of community. Reviewers consistently describe the staff as warm, kind, personable, and genuinely engaged with residents; multiple reviewers highlighted that staff know residents personally and that interactions feel authentic. Named staff and leaders—Becky (activity director), Chris and Mark (management), and a praised RN—are noted as particular strengths. The community’s smaller size is repeatedly framed as an advantage that creates a home-like, social environment where residents quickly form friendships and staff can provide individualized attention.

Activities and social life are standout positives. Becky, described as “pure joy,” and the activities team receive specific acclaim for offering a broad set of options: bridge club, bingo, crafts, weekly religious services, pontoon rides and dock access, fishing, theater and shopping outings, shuttle service, and organized social events. These programs help residents stay engaged and are frequently cited as a key reason people feel their relatives “came to life” after moving in. Facilities such as the dock, lake-view balconies, underground parking, beauty shop, and laundry (not requiring quarters) add convenience and quality-of-life value.

Care quality receives mixed but generally favorable comments. Many reviewers praise good care coordination, customizable help for residents, unobtrusive caregiving, and an attentive RN. The facility accepts senior waivers and offers three meals a day with meal plan or pay-as-you-go options, which reviewers view as helpful for budgeting and care continuity. However, notable concerns were raised about medication management errors and occasional fluctuations in care quality. Some families noted variability in supervision and a worry about staff continuity after incidents such as an abrupt managerial change, which suggests reliance on key individuals and a potential vulnerability if staff turnover occurs.

The physical plant is described as attractive for its lakeside location and grounds but also clearly aging in places. Many reviewers said the community is well-kept and clean, with ongoing remodeling of common areas, yet several apartment kitchens and units are outdated—missing dishwashers, garbage disposals (some units had broken disposals then later fixed), microwaves, or modern stoves. Reviewers describe the apartments as comfortable and spacious overall but note that the building’s age means some updates are still needed. On-site therapy services (PT) were mentioned as not well-equipped, which may matter for residents with heavier rehab needs.

Dining impressions are generally positive regarding nutrition and the ability to accommodate special requests, but several reviewers pointed out a limited variety of ethnic foods and a tendency toward basic, traditional fare (“meat and potatoes”). Meals are described as thoughtfully prepared and nutritious by many, and staff involved with dining are appreciated, but families seeking a more diverse menu may find it lacking.

Cost and policy transparency are recurring themes. Multiple reviewers called out Elim Shores as affordably priced and a good value, especially given included services and the acceptance of waivers. At the same time, some mentioned rent increases, lease term questions, and additional optional costs that could influence a decision. There were also comments about unclear policies regarding transitioning between independent and assisted living services, which is an important operational detail for families planning long-term care trajectories.

In summary, Elim Shores is consistently praised for its compassionate staff, active and joyful activities program, strong sense of community, and appealing lakeside environment. It is particularly well suited to residents who value a smaller, homey campus with frequent social engagement and personalized attention. The main areas for improvement are facility updates (especially kitchen amenities), clarity around lease/policy and assisted vs. independent status, more robust medication management protocols, and better-equipped on-site therapy. Families who prioritize warm staff, activities, and location will likely view Elim Shores very favorably; those prioritizing modern apartments, extensive medical/therapy services, or a broader dining variety should ask specific questions and confirm current upgrades and policies during a tour.

    About Elim Shores

Elim Shores sits on the quiet shore of Mitchell Lake in Eden Prairie, MN, covering about eight acres full of trees, gardens, and walking paths, and there's even talk about putting in a dock and pontoon down the line, so if you like the outdoors, this place gives plenty of space for fresh air and views of the water. The community offers both independent and assisted living options, with 64 spacious apartments, many with balconies that look out over the lake, and you can pick from studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom layouts, all with either a full kitchen or kitchenette, private bath with grab bars, and walk-in showers, plus the rooms have individual heat and air conditioning controls so you can keep it how you like. The staff is around 24 hours a day and stays pretty consistent over the years-they know the residents well and can help whenever needed, using urgency pendants so someone's always available for emergencies, and they focus on letting residents stay as independent as possible while still lending a hand, which means folks can get light or medium care, but there's no heavy care on site.

For folks needing extra support, the community tailors services like diabetic care and incontinence care-though if someone has incontinence, they need to handle changing themselves-and there's standby help for things like getting in and out of a bed or wheelchair, yet the staff can help check blood sugar levels but can't give insulin shots. Elim Shores's health services include an initial assessment and personal care plans, monthly check-ins by a nurse, two loads of laundry a week, weekly linen changes and housekeeping, plus they'll help schedule transportation. There are meals made from scratch every day, snacks and drinks always available, and the satellite TV and Wi-Fi are basic but get the job done, and there's transportation for activities or appointments if someone doesn't want to worry about driving anymore.

Life at Elim Shores has indoor common spaces for socializing, a beauty salon/barber shop on site, lounges, and a full calendar of clubs, classes, and scheduled events, plus devotional services and support for spiritual needs, and if getting out is more your speed, there are outings for shopping and entertainment. The facility is owned and operated by Cassia, a faith-based group, and residents need to be at least 62 years old. There's a separate memory care community and access to hospice and home care services, so the place tries to cover most needs as folks age, and being able to make a home in a place where people know you by name and where there's always someone to check in on you can bring some peace to both residents and families.
