    Smooth move, beautiful building, caring

I moved my mom in after a smooth, fast enrollment and have had a very good experience. The building is beautiful and impeccably maintained, her apartment fits her needs, and staff-especially Liz, Angie and the activities director-are warm, welcoming, and very responsive. There are lots of engaging activities, strong family communication, and attentive daily care; I'd happily recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment in these review summaries is mixed: many reviewers praise Elk River Senior Living for its attractive, homey environment, active programming, and friendly, helpful staff, while a substantial number raise serious concerns about cost, maintenance, cleanliness, staffing levels, and food quality. Positive comments frequently emphasize social engagement, community amenities, and strong personal connections between staff and residents. Negative comments repeatedly point to deferred maintenance, inconsistent cleanliness, and operational issues that suggest declining management attention.

Care quality and staffing: Reviews paint a nuanced picture. Several reviewers report that aides and nurses are attentive, approachable, and helpful — staff often learn residents' names, are responsive to family requests, and an activities director is singled out as proactive and effective at engaging residents. For residents with relatively minimal care needs, reviewers express satisfaction and say needs are being met. However, multiple accounts also highlight short-staffing, high turnover of aides, and a small number of RNs (three mentioned), which contributes to concerns about continuity of care. Some reviewers explicitly call out lazy or rude HHA staff, rigid nurses who do not collaborate well with families, and periods when staff are unavailable. Taken together, these comments indicate variability in staff performance and staffing levels: strong relationships exist for many residents, but staffing shortages and turnover are meaningful concerns that could impact care reliability for higher-need residents.

Facilities and maintenance: Facility amenities receive praise — reviewers note a beauty salon, theater room, activity room, library, transportation, and generally pleasant apartments. At least one reviewer described the community as beautiful when it opened. Contrasting that, a persistent and recurring theme is deferred maintenance and cleanliness problems. Multiple reviewers mention hallways not cleaned for months, unfinished painting left for nine months or longer, a deck repair outstanding for over two years, and a missing screen porch door for a similar timeframe. The fitness room is reported as undersized with only two pieces of equipment and one needing repair; no treadmills are available. These complaints suggest an ongoing maintenance backlog and inconsistent facilities upkeep. Some reviewers explicitly say the community has declined in management and physical condition since opening.

Dining and resident life: Activities and social opportunities are consistently reported as strengths. The activities director is repeatedly praised for getting residents engaged and out of their rooms, and community members appreciate being among peers of similar age. Meals receive mixed-to-negative feedback: presentation and table settings were appreciated by some (e.g., four-plate settings with goblet and coffee cup), and pandemic adaptations such as room delivery were noted. Yet several reviewers complain about poor food quality, limited meal options (a single meal option mentioned), and unclear meal plans or pricing/inclusions related to dining. Food quality appears to be one of the more common service criticisms.

Management, costs, and transparency: Cost is a frequent and strong concern — reviewers repeatedly describe the community as expensive and question whether services and quality match the monthly fees (one reviewer called it a waste of $4,000). Some say the place feels 'dollar-driven' and that management has declined, implying a tension between pricing and perceived value. There are also comments about unclear pricing inclusions and questions around meal plan details. On the positive side, a few reviewers found pricing fair and the location convenient, and several families praised the enrollment process as fast and staff as accommodating during move-in and tours.

Patterns and notable concerns: Two clear patterns emerge. First, social and programmatic strengths are strong selling points: residents and families frequently praise activities, staff who engage residents, and amenities that support social life. Second, operational weaknesses — especially deferred maintenance, cleanliness lapses, understaffing, turnover, and inconsistent food quality — are repeatedly mentioned and appear to be chronic in some reviewers' experiences. These operational concerns are often tied to perceptions of management decline and value-for-cost issues.

Bottom line: Elk River Senior Living offers many of the hallmarks families seek — pleasant apartments, active programming, caring staff members, and useful amenities — and several reviewers strongly recommend the community. However, prospective residents and families should weigh these positives against repeated reports of deferred maintenance, cleanliness issues, limited dining choices/food quality, staffing shortages and turnover, and relatively high cost. If considering this community, visitors should specifically inspect common areas and recent maintenance work, ask detailed questions about staffing levels (including RN coverage and aide turnover), request written specifics on what is included in monthly fees (meals and activities), and discuss recent or ongoing repair and cleaning plans with management to assess whether the operational issues have been addressed.

    About Elk River Senior Care

Elk River Senior Care has 115 licensed beds and offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care, including specialized dementia services licensed by state and local governments. The Blue Stone unit, identified as "Blue Stone 20241," provides extra support for memory care. You'll find long-term care services that don't take Medicare unless the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services certifies them, but the staff helps with things like incontinence, high acuity care, medication management, diabetic support, and non-ambulatory needs. The team includes a Director of Nursing and a Licensed Assisted Living Director who handle unexpected deaths, falls with injury, VA incidents, or elopement attempts, and there's an after-hours nursing line for emergencies or concerns. Families can call from 7am to 9pm in case an incident happens without injury.

This community has a focus on meaningful living and encourages residents to stay involved, with a variety of activities, social events, exercise programs, and wellness on wheels to keep everyone active. The apartments are spacious, have plenty of natural light, safety features, carpeting, and you'll find both independent and assisted living spaces with a continuum of care that lets people stay in the same community as their needs change. Housekeeping, a pub and billiard room, a library, a community room, a chapel, and outdoor features like a large covered porch, three-season porch, patios with gazebos, and a putting green add to the comfort. Chef-prepared meals get served in bright dining rooms or outdoors, and the Best Meals and Dining award shows meals use quality ingredients, with menus designed for residents' needs.

Security's addressed with controlled access, and there's Wi-Fi and high-speed internet throughout. Pets are welcome, and the building's handicap accessible, with an on-site salon for residents who want some pampering. The staff runs memory care programs with specialized support and brain-boosting tasks for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, and they keep residents active physically and mentally with an active therapy program, calendars of social and fitness events, and spiritual and educational activities. Residents get help with daily needs when needed, such as bathing, dressing, medical reminders, and scheduling, so people can age safely while still living as fully as possible. The staff has won awards for their kindness and joyfulness, and reviews often mention friendly team members and good activities. Elk River Senior Care has earned awards like Best of Senior Living and Best Meals and Dining for 2024, showing that people who live there and their families feel it's a solid place for seniors who need different levels of care. The whole community has a home-like feel with spacious apartments and different living options for every stage, from independence to more hands-on help, and residents can count on having something meaningful to do every day in a safe, friendly, and supportive setting.
