    Care declined after ownership change

I placed Bob here and while he's still happy and healthy, the place has gone downhill since the ownership change. The new owner is controlling, unkind and unprofessional, staff are rude and disrespectful, and care quality is lacking - residents have been denied medication and clothing. The building is messy with a cigarette odor and not welcoming. I would not recommend.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Windy Acres Long Term Care Inc. are predominantly negative, with multiple reviewers describing a marked decline in the facility after an ownership change. The most common themes are concerns about management and staff demeanor, deterioration of physical upkeep, and concrete care-related complaints. There are, however, isolated positive comments indicating that at least one resident (named Bob) is happy and healthy and that one reviewer found the facility friendly. These positive notes are sparse compared with the volume and severity of the negative feedback.

Management and ownership: A recurring pattern is that a change in ownership has led to perceived decline. Reviewers explicitly characterize the owner or management as controlling, rude, unprofessional, and lacking compassion. Several reviews singled out the owner’s behavior as unkind and not welcoming; this appears to set the tone reviewers experienced for overall interactions. The ownership/management complaints are significant because they are tied not only to interpersonal issues but also to reported operational decisions (for example, denial of medication or clothing) that directly affect resident wellbeing.

Staff behavior and culture: Staff conduct is another major negative theme. Multiple reviewers use words such as disrespect, contempt, rude, and disorderly to describe staff interactions with residents and families. This suggests a broader cultural problem rather than isolated incidents. One review mentions “staff contempt” specifically, indicating a perceived lack of dignity and respect toward residents. Although one reviewer described the facility as friendly and reported a happy resident, that positive view appears to be the exception and not the norm in the available summaries.

Care quality and resident safety: Reviews contain serious care-related allegations, including that residents were denied medication and denied clothing. These are specific and alarming claims that point to potential lapses in both clinical oversight and basic custodial care. Several summaries directly state that care quality is lacking or poor. The presence of explicit reports about medication denial elevates the severity of the concerns beyond general dissatisfaction and suggests possible risks to resident health and safety.

Facilities and cleanliness: Multiple reviewers describe the physical environment as unkempt, messy, or untidy. There is also a specific report of cigarette odor in the building, which raises concerns about ventilation, indoor smoking policies, and the general sanitary condition of the premises. These facility-related complaints align with the broader theme of decline following ownership changes and reinforce perceptions that upkeep and resident comfort may be deprioritized.

Other aspects (dining, activities, etc.): The supplied review summaries do not provide information about dining, activities, medical staffing levels, therapy services, or other specific programmatic offerings. Reviewers focused primarily on interpersonal interactions, management behavior, basic care provision, and facility cleanliness. Because of that, no conclusions can reliably be drawn from these summaries about the quality of food, recreational programming, or clinical staffing beyond the direct care complaints noted.

Patterns and recommendations for readers: The dominant pattern is negative—multiple independent reviewers raise similar issues around management tone, staff behavior, and basic care/cleanliness. The most actionable and concerning specifics are the allegations of denied medication and denied clothing, the reported unkempt conditions and cigarette odor, and repeated descriptions of the owner as rude and controlling. If evaluating Windy Acres Long Term Care Inc., prospective residents or family members should seek direct, up-to-date information from the facility about medication management, staff training and turnover, recent ownership changes and their operational impact, housekeeping/ventilation policies, and the facility’s approach to resident dignity and complaints. Given the mixed but largely negative reviews, an in-person visit, meetings with current residents and families, and checks with local regulatory or licensing bodies would be advisable before making placement decisions.

About Windy Acres Long Term Care Inc.

Windy Acres Long Term Care Inc. sits over on Lake Blvd in Forest Lake, offering care for seniors since November 1, 1971, and you'd find that it's got just 17 licensed beds, so things feel a bit more like a small neighborhood than a big, busy building, which some families say gives them peace of mind knowing folks won't get lost in the crowd. The place is licensed with the Minnesota Department of Health and the Secretary of State and focuses on long-term care, with both assisted living and memory care for people living with dementia, including Alzheimer's, and you can expect staff to speak English and be ready to help non-ambulatory residents or those who might need extra support, even with incontinence care or moving from place to place. Residents get help with daily tasks like dressing, bathing, transfers, and such, and there's medication management set up, which is useful for those with mild cognitive struggles, and the staff works with outside healthcare providers to keep medical care coordinated. Windy Acres has private or shared rooms, including studio options, and there's 24-hour supervision along with a call system throughout, which helps if someone needs quick help in an emergency, and because it's a secured community with emergency alerts everywhere, families can feel safer if their loved one needs memory care. There are meals planned by chefs and meal planners-special dietary needs like allergies or diabetes can be handled-and residents can eat all day in a dedicated dining space or pick from options, with housekeeping, laundry, and move-in help all available too. Windy Acres includes things like a community room, gardens, walking paths, arts room, movie nights, and a salon and barber, plus organized activities, transportation for errands or outings, and plenty of parking for visitors or those still able to drive. Entertainment, phones in rooms, and help with daily chores make it feel homelike, while hospice and dementia waivers allow for a level of care you don't get everywhere. There's no BBB accreditation and you won't find a lot of detailed public information about every service or amenity they provide, but what's known points to a steady, supportive place for seniors, especially those who need memory care, in a setting that doesn't feel overwhelming or impersonal.
