    Good care but staff issues

I placed my grandmother here and she's doing very well - nurses and CNAs are attentive and residents seem well cared for. However, staff can be unhelpful, meals often arrive cold, and I noticed what appeared to be discriminatory hiring practices.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the brief reviews is mixed but leans positive with respect to clinical care and the physical facility. Multiple reviewers explicitly praise the nursing staff and certified nursing assistants, and several comments emphasize that residents are well cared for. One reviewer notes specifically that their grandmother is doing very well, reinforcing a perception of competent hands-on care for individual residents.

Care quality and direct caregiving are the strongest recurring themes in the positive comments. "Good nurses and CNAs" and "residents well cared for" appear consistently, indicating that day-to-day medical and personal care tasks (medication administration, assistance with activities of daily living, and general supervision) are viewed favorably by several family members. This suggests that the facility has staff who are trusted to provide attentive, effective care to long-term residents.

However, there are important and serious concerns raised that temper the positive impressions. One review alleges discriminatory hiring practices, which is a significant management and culture issue. The wording in the summary indicates this is an allegation from a reviewer rather than a documented finding; nonetheless, it points to potential problems with leadership, human resources, or workplace culture that could affect staff morale, turnover, and ultimately resident experience if true.

Related to staff and service, another negative theme is staff helpfulness — at least one reviewer described staff as "not helpful." This contrasts with the praise for nurses and CNAs and may reflect inconsistent experiences: clinical caregivers may perform well while other staff (e.g., administrative, support, or dining personnel) may be less responsive. The dining experience is also singled out: a reviewer reported food being served cold. That specific operational complaint suggests issues in food service timing, kitchen-to-dining coordination, or meal reheating and could affect resident satisfaction and nutrition if recurring.

Facility impressions are positive — reviewers called it a "great facility" — which implies the physical environment, cleanliness, or amenities are satisfactory. There is little direct information about activities, programming, or long-term management practices beyond the hiring allegation, so no strong conclusions can be drawn about recreational or social offerings.

In summary, the dominant positive themes are reliable, hands-on caregiving from nurses and CNAs and an overall well-maintained facility that has produced good outcomes for at least some residents. The dominant negatives involve potentially serious administrative/cultural concerns (an allegation of discriminatory hiring) and operational/service issues such as inconsistent staff helpfulness and cold food. These mixed signals suggest that while clinical care may be a strength, prospective residents and families should probe management practices, staff responsiveness across all roles, and dining operations during tours or conversations with leadership to determine whether the negative items are isolated incidents or indicative of broader problems. The reviews are limited in number and detail, so further investigation and direct observation are advisable before making placement decisions.

About Good Samaritan Society - Luverne

Good Samaritan Society - Luverne sits at 110 South Walnut Avenue in Luverne, MN, serving Rock County since 1959, and it's part of the larger Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society network, so you get a place with strong roots in the community and a history of caring for older adults, and they make sure someone's in charge of following Section 504 and Section 1557 regulations to support everyone's rights and needs, which helps residents feel included and safe. The facility provides a skilled nursing wing for both short-term rehab and long-term care, though right now they're not taking new patients, and the staff speaks English. They've got different types of living arrangements, like assisted living, independent living, and memory care, with special focus on helping residents with dementia or Alzheimer's stay comfortable and avoid getting confused or wandering off. Seniors can also use home-based services and home health, depending on what works best, and there's help for caregivers if needed. Folks can access both inpatient and outpatient rehab therapy, and they've got programs for diabetic care, non-ambulatory care, and incontinence care, aiming to cover a wide range of health needs. The community makes sure nutritious meals are planned and cooked by chefs, and they have spaces for meals, daily activities, and devotional times, so residents can keep their body, mind, and spirit active. There's staff specially trained to give non-medical friendship, too, and amenities are designed for comfort and ease, with common areas for socializing and quiet time. They're very focused on matching care types to what each resident needs rather than a one-size-fits-all plan, and they coordinate with local referral partners and resources for whatever extra support a person might require. If you're interested in seeing how everything works, the facility offers scheduled tours.
