    Caring clean engaging memory care

I moved my mom here and I'm very glad I did. The staff are caring, communicative and go above and beyond - memory care is engaging, activities are varied (entertainers, games, outings), meals are nutritious with gluten-free options and a buffet we enjoy, and the building is clean, bright and conveniently located. I've seen occasional weekend inattentiveness, some disorganization/meal waits and small/odd apartment layouts (and a past walker disappearance that concerned me), but staff addressed issues and stay responsive. Overall safe, compassionate care at good value - I highly recommend.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for The Homestead at Maplewood is strongly positive, with the most frequent and emphatic praise directed at the staff. Multiple reviewers highlight caring, compassionate, and long-tenured team members who communicate clearly with families, respond quickly to resident needs, and often go above and beyond. Families report feeling comfortable leaving loved ones in the community, noting that staff are attentive to personal preferences and provide primary-care level monitoring. Admissions and leadership are repeatedly described as welcoming and helpful, which contributes to a smooth move-in experience and overall confidence in management.

Dining is frequently mentioned as a strength, with many residents and families complimenting nutritious, healthy, and visually appealing meals. The community accommodates special diets (including gluten-free) and uses a buffet-style kitchen that allows choice. However, dining experiences are mixed in some reviews: a number of families reported inconsistent meal quality, occasional long waits for food (reports up to about 25 minutes), and situations where meals needed extra prep for specific residents. While many find the food delicious and satisfying, several reviews suggest the dining service could be more consistent and timely.

Activities and social life are another prominent positive theme. The Homestead offers a varied events calendar — from Balloon Toss games and weekly exercise to outings like van rides for ice cream and State Fair-themed activities — and many residents are described as socially engaged and happy. Memory care programming receives specific praise for daily engagement and weekday entertainers. That said, some reviewers note limited variety for certain residents and mention that weekends sometimes feel less supported, with a couple of reports of weekend staff inattentiveness. Overall, the community’s programming is seen as lively and family-oriented but could benefit from more consistency and broader variety.

Facility upkeep and environment are generally viewed positively: reviewers commonly describe the building as clean, bright, cheerful, and well-kept with pleasant common areas and nicely maintained grounds. The dining room and courtyard are often singled out as nice features. Contrasting comments raise issues around the age of the building and maintenance details — some reviewers report carpet odors or carpeting that needs replacement, windows not cleaned well, and occasional unpleasant smells. These appear to be more isolated concerns rather than widespread reports, but they are recurring enough to merit attention. Apartment sizes and layouts get mixed feedback: many find studios surprisingly spacious and bright, while others describe small or odd layouts that might not fit everyone’s needs.

Safety, health, and operational concerns are limited but important. The community is described as secure, and families appreciate the nursing focus and medical monitoring. A notable negative safety report involved a missing walker and worries about weekend oversight. A few reviews also describe virtual-only visitation policies that led to feelings of isolation for some residents during certain periods. Additionally, a small number of reviewers mentioned staff language barriers and occasional operational disorganization. Some families expressed concern about potential future declines in quality tied to staffing or management changes, though this is expressed more as a worry than a widespread complaint.

In summary, The Homestead at Maplewood is consistently praised for its compassionate staff, positive family communication, engaging activities, and generally clean, homey environment. Dining and social programming are strengths overall, with the facility providing accommodating and personalized care for many residents. Areas for improvement include ensuring consistent meal quality and timeliness, addressing maintenance details (carpeting, windows, odors), increasing weekend staffing consistency, expanding activity variety for some residents, and attending to isolated safety/operational concerns. For families prioritizing staff quality, community feeling, location, and value, reviews recommend the Homestead, while those who require pristine facility finishes or very large/new apartment layouts may want to tour carefully and ask targeted questions about maintenance and weekend staffing.
