    Caring staff but poor management

I've lived here long-term and the staff are genuinely caring - the facility offers a wide array of programs and amenities (fitness room, personal trainer, music rooms and lessons, bus passes, tobacco-cessation and social/mental-health programming), is IRTS-licensed and even has dieticians and an active resident council; the artwork is nice. However, rooms are tiny (feel like jail cells), bedroom and mail privacy are poor, carpets need replacing, and building cleanliness is hit-or-miss. Food service is disappointing (cold sandwiches, even mold on meals reported), and management/control issues worry me: medication safety and supervision feel mismanaged, there have been unexplained pay deductions and I had to demand an itemized bill. Overall, caring staff and strong programming can't overcome poor management, safety concerns and low value for the cost.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed but leans toward negative in several important operational areas despite repeated praise for frontline caregiving and programming. Reviewers consistently note that clinical and day-to-day caregiving can be strong — phrases such as "excellent care," "caring staff," and "consistent care quality" appear, indicating that many residents experience attentive, compassionate staff. The facility also offers a broad and notable slate of services and activities: health and mental health housing, IRTS-licensed services, dieticians, a fitness room with a personal trainer, music rooms and personal lessons, social and mental health programming, tobacco cessation programs, bus passes, and flexible personal scheduling. The active resident council and visible artwork are also cited as positives that contribute to community engagement and the environment.

At the same time, multiple reviews raise serious and recurring operational and environmental concerns. Physical accommodations are frequently criticized: rooms are described as very small ("jail-cell size"), bedroom privacy is inadequate, carpets need replacing, and building cleanliness is described as variable with at least one report of mold. These facility issues directly affect resident comfort and safety. Dining is a mixed area — while all meals are provided in a cafeteria-style format and dieticians are present, there are complaints such as cold sandwiches that suggest inconsistent food service execution.

Several administrative and safety-related problems stand out. Medication safety and potential mismanagement are explicitly mentioned, which is a major red flag for any senior living environment and contradicts the otherwise positive notes about caregiving. Reviewers also report concerns about mail privacy and request greater billing transparency (an itemized bill was requested), and some mention "pay deductions," which could refer to billing or payroll issues. Management and governance are criticized: terms such as "poor supervision," "negative management," and problematic "owner/admin control" appear, and at least one long-term resident expresses unhappiness and suggests they would have been better off elsewhere. These governance and administrative concerns likely amplify residents' frustration with physical and service shortcomings.

In summary, Andrew Residence offers a robust programmatic and clinical framework — good caregiving by staff, comprehensive activities, and licensed health services are clear strengths. However, significant weaknesses in facilities maintenance, environmental cleanliness, dining consistency, medication safety, billing transparency, and perceived management issues undermine the overall resident experience. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility's strong staff and programming against the reported physical conditions and administrative concerns, seek clarification on medication management and billing procedures, and, if possible, speak with current residents or the resident council to get up-to-date, specific information about improvements or ongoing problems.

    About Andrew Residence

Andrew Residence sits in Minneapolis and carries license number 1009809 from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, standing as a Level II Nursing Facility with 212 beds for adults over 21 who live with mental illness, and while some people may have a secondary substance abuse disorder, the rules ask for at least 30 days of sobriety before admission. It's a place where people with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, psychosis, PTSD, eating disorders, gambling disorder, and many other mental health conditions, even problems tied to different addictions like alcohol, opioids, and stimulants, can get evidence-based, trauma-informed care and support from a team that treats everyone like an expert on their own experience. The staff, including social workers, nurses, and therapists, offer around-the-clock nursing for both physical and mental health needs, and they also help with everyday tasks through services like laundry, dining, medications, transportation, and housekeeping, plus group exercise, religious activities, and various therapy options such as physical, occupational, and speech and language therapy right onsite, with amenities like a clinical lab, pharmacy, dental, podiatry, and vocational services all rolled into the care plan. The programming covers a wide ground with things like Partial Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient, Detox, Outpatient, Sober Living, Transitional Housing, Psychiatric Hospital care, and Telehealth, as well as classes in budgeting, laundry, work skills, nutrition, and recreation led by the health education team, and even music therapy, which donors help support, to enrich residents' daily life. There's a focus on building up independent living skills, helping residents spot their own strengths, learn new coping skills, and grow towards more independence, while a multidisciplinary team looks after folks who have both mental illness and other issues such as dual diagnoses or chronic medical problems, making sure everyone's health, safety, and comfort are looked after with security systems and emergency call systems in place. People living there can take part in recreational programs, vocational training, volunteer opportunities, paid work like phone reception or cleaning, and family or community events, which help keep everyone involved and connected, while staff maintain a supportive working atmosphere and strive to communicate clearly-though texts or SMS aren't used-making sure admissions go smoothly and both residents and families get the resources and care they need over the long term in what they call the Andrew Community.
