    Warm caring staff, modern facility

I toured and moved my mom here and have been impressed: the new, clean, modern facility feels homey and staff (Joan, Dena and caregivers) are warm, know residents by name, and genuinely care. Meals in small dining rooms are good, rooms are comfortable (studio or pricier suite), and activities are plentiful - church/Bible study, bingo, exercise, salon, movies, speakers and outings - with nice outdoor seating and walkable grounds. Medical support and safety measures feel solid (care continuum, on-site pharmacy, pendants) and residents are well looked after. Caveats: occasional staff turnover and communication hiccups, and rates can be high, but overall it's a peaceful, supportive community and great care for my mom.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with repeated emphasis on compassionate staff, a safe clinical environment, and a warm, home-like atmosphere. Reviewers consistently describe staff as friendly, helpful, attentive and personally engaged — frequently noting that caregivers and front-desk personnel know residents by name, pray at meals, and bring a genuine sense of warmth and peace. Multiple comments highlight memorable tours guided by specific staff members (for example, Dena and Joan), and families praise long-term positive relationships with management and caregiving teams. The facility’s Benedictine values and visible commitment to resident dignity are commonly cited as central strengths.

Care quality and clinical supports are a major positive theme. Reviews mention thorough medical assessments, a clear care continuum that allows adjustable care levels, and practical supports such as call pendants and an on-site pharmacy that assists without charging extra medication fees. Families appreciate assistance with long-term care insurance processing, and many express confidence that residents are safe and well cared for. There are numerous statements describing excellent care and caregivers who go beyond routine duties; some reviewers called the facility a “gold standard” for care.

The physical environment and amenities receive frequent praise. The building is described as new, modern, well-maintained and tastefully decorated, with clean common areas and no strong odors. Residents live in smaller neighborhood-style units within the larger campus, which contributes to a more intimate feel. Outdoor access, walkable grounds, ample parking, and pleasant dining areas are positive practical features. On-site amenities such as a salon, exercise rooms, weekly housekeeping, regular trash pickup, and artful decor add to a comfortable daily life for residents.

Dining and activities are also notable strengths. Meals are included and generally described as good; reviewers enjoy mealtime moments, the small dining areas, and the social aspect of eating together. The community offers a broad slate of activities: exercise classes, Bingo, music, guest speakers, movie days, group visits, trips, church services and Bible study. These social and spiritual opportunities are repeatedly linked to residents’ sense of belonging and reduced stress.

Despite the many positives, several recurrent concerns should be noted. Staffing instability and turnover are mentioned by multiple reviewers, and some families reported communication gaps between staff and relatives during transitions. While many reviews emphasize excellent caregiver dedication, a few note inconsistency tied to staffing changes, and at least one review explicitly asked for better compensation for caregivers. The facility’s size and its neighborhood structure—an asset for many—may create a risk for residents with advanced memory impairment or confusion who could become disoriented by separate wings or larger campus navigation. Several reviewers also called attention to small studio rooms that feel more “hospital-style,” and suites are available only at a higher cost.

Cost is another mixed area. While some reviewers describe fees as reasonable and inclusive of utilities and meals, others note higher rates and additional charges for upgraded accommodations. The menu was praised for quality but described by some as routine, suggesting occasional desire for more variety. A few references to COVID-era changes (meal delivery and other adjustments) indicate that communal routines were disrupted at times, though these appear situational and not ongoing complaints.

In summary, Benedictine Living Community–Rochester Madonna Meadows is presented in these reviews as a compassionate, well-run community with a strong emphasis on personal attention, clinical safety, and a home-like culture. Strengths include deeply committed staff, comprehensive clinical supports (including pharmacy assistance and insurance help), a modern clean facility, inclusive meals, and a rich activity and spiritual life. Areas to watch are staffing consistency and communication with families, room-size options and associated pricing, and potential navigation/memory risks posed by the building’s neighborhood layout. For prospective residents and families, the reviews suggest a community that excels in care and atmosphere but that may warrant specific questions about room types, staffing stability, and costs during the touring and contracting process.

    About Benedictine

Benedictine Living Community-Rochester Madonna Meadows is managed by Benedictine.

Benedictine, established in 1985 by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery in Duluth, Minnesota, has grown into one of the largest Catholic senior living organizations in the United States, operating over 35 communities across Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri. With annual revenues reaching billion, approximately 5,000 employees, and over million of senior living assets under management, this faith-based nonprofit organization has experienced significant expansion from a single skilled nursing facility to a multi-state healthcare network through strategic acquisitions, partnerships, sponsorship transitions, and joint ventures.

Under the leadership of President and CEO Jerry Carley, who joined in 2018 bringing over 35 years of senior care experience, Benedictine has maintained its position as an industry leader while preserving its Catholic heritage and mission-driven focus. Carley's leadership has earned significant recognition, including being named to The Minnesota 500 as one of the state's most powerful executives (2018-2020) and designation as one of Minnesota's Most Influential Health Care Leaders by Minnesota Physician Magazine in 2020. His extensive background includes previous roles as president and CEO of CSJ Initiatives and service on LeadingAge Minnesota's board of directors, where he serves as Chair.

Benedictine's innovative memory care program exemplifies their commitment to specialized care through two distinct neighborhoods: Tabitha, named after Sister Tabitha who was the first woman to head a hospital setting, which serves residents with mild to moderate memory loss, and Pauline, honoring Sister Pauline who devoted her life to dementia care, providing specialized support for those with moderate to advanced dementia. These research-based programs employ best practices in dementia care, offering engaging activities, personalized care plans, and family integration support. The organization's comprehensive service continuum extends to Adult Day Programs in Duluth and Winona, providing daytime respite care with trained memory care staff, while facilities like Benedictine Minneapolis specialize in complex medical care including tracheostomy and ventilator support.

The organization's care philosophy centers on nurturing mind, body, and spirit, rooted in Benedictine values of Hospitality, Stewardship, Respect, and Justice. This holistic approach emphasizes listening with the "ear of the heart," creating welcoming environments where unique needs are respected and each person's spirituality is honored. Through comprehensive rehabilitation services, spiritual care programs led by Director of Spiritual Care Rev. J. Scott Cartwright, and purposeful recreation incorporating art, music therapy, and movement, Benedictine continues the healthcare ministry begun by the Benedictine Sisters over a century ago. Recent strategic decisions, including the 2024 transition of Benedictine Living Community-Wausau to The Ensign Group, demonstrate the organization's commitment to ensuring sustainable, high-quality care while adapting to evolving market dynamics and maintaining their mission of empowering older adults to live to their highest potential.
