    Pleasant facility but unsafe care

I wanted to love this small, clean facility - private bathrooms, good food, porch and nature path, engaging activities, and many staff were compassionate, attentive, upbeat and worked well with hospice. Unfortunately my experience also had serious failures: medication errors that caused seizures, billing sent to the resident instead of me, no communication with family caregivers, disrespectful staff at times, and theft/missing belongings (cash and a power chair) now under investigation. Because of those safety, communication and financial issues I cannot recommend this place or bring a loved one here.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for New Harmony Care Center is highly mixed, with many families and residents praising the facility's location, cleanliness, food, compassionate caregiving, and small, homelike atmosphere, while a significant number of reviews allege very serious problems including abuse, theft, medication errors, and poor communication. The pattern is one of sharp contrasts: several reviews describe the center as an ideal place with excellent end-of-life care, strong hospice coordination, and staff who treat residents like family; other reviews describe deeply troubling incidents that have caused physical harm or financial loss and warn others not to use the facility.

Care quality and outcomes: Many reviewers reported positive clinical and emotional outcomes for residents. Multiple accounts note thorough care protocols, attentive staff, improvements in physical health, and improvements in emotional well-being. Several reviewers singled out excellent hospice care and compassionate end-of-life services, saying staff provided exceptional coordination and comfort. These positive reports also emphasize that long-term staff and an upbeat atmosphere contributed to a sense of being welcomed and well cared for.

Staff behavior and variability: Staff performance is the most polarized theme. Numerous reviews praise staff as friendly, smiling, engaging, and caring — going beyond clinical needs to give residents personal attention and create a warm environment. Conversely, an equally strong set of reviews describe disrespectful staff, medication errors (one reviewer linked an error to a seizure), theft of money and belongings, and allegations of staff abusing legal documents to take a resident’s home. Several reviewers reported lies about missing items, cash and a power chair not returned, and that an investigation was opened. This variability suggests uneven hiring, training, supervision, or accountability. Where staff are praised, families report peace of mind; where staff are accused of misconduct, families report trauma and loss.

Facility, rooms and amenities: The building and grounds are frequently described positively: the location is convenient, there is a nature path behind the building, and a front porch that fits a few people. The facility is often described as clean with no offensive odors and as a smaller, attractive center. Many residents have private rooms with attached bathrooms, which reviewers appreciated. However, some reviews note specific room issues — especially temporary rooms that are small and depressing — indicating variability in room size and condition depending on placement or availability.

Dining and activities: Dining and activities are consistent relative strengths. Multiple reviewers commented that the food looks and tastes good, dining staff are attentive, and there is a variety of engaging activities like bingo, word games, and trivia. Those positive mentions contribute to reports of residents feeling happier and more engaged.

Management, communication and billing: Communication and administrative practices are recurring concerns. Several reviewers reported poor or non-existent communication with family caregivers, billing problems including bills being sent to the patient rather than the responsible caregiver, and frantic calls about payment. Some families said they bore unexpected financial responsibility. There are also reports of arbitrary rules and poor transparency around belongings and incidents. Where management and communication are strong, families reported coordinated care and clear interaction; where management is weak, families reported distress, surprise charges, and unresolved allegations.

Notable patterns and risk considerations: The reviews suggest two distinct types of experiences at New Harmony Care Center: for some families it provides compassionate, high-quality long-term and hospice care in a clean, small, community atmosphere; for others it has been the site of severe problems — theft, alleged legal abuse, medication mistakes, and poor accountability. Because of these starkly contrasting accounts, the most important pattern is inconsistency. Positive indicators (clean facility, private baths, good food, engaging staff) are real and recurring, but the presence of multiple serious allegations (theft, abuse, medication error leading to seizure, misuse of notarized documents) is alarming and cannot be ignored.

Conclusion and practical implication: Anyone considering New Harmony Care Center should weigh both the frequent positive reports and the serious negative allegations. The center appears capable of delivering excellent, compassionate care for many residents, but families should perform thorough due diligence: ask about staffing levels and turnover, staff training and background checks, medication administration protocols and safeguards, secure handling and documentation of residents’ personal belongings, billing procedures, and whether there are any ongoing investigations or substantiated incidents. Visit in person at different times of day to observe interactions, speak with current families when possible, and get written policies on billing, property handling, and incident reporting. The mixed reviews indicate potential for very good care but also documented risks that merit careful scrutiny before placement.

    About New Harmony Care Center

New Harmony Care Center has a wide range of senior care options all in one community, so people can move in while they're still living independently and stay as their needs change over time, which a lot of families find helpful since the place handles independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing care, all within the same property. They've been open since 2005 and operate both at their main Maplewood address and from a Saint Paul mailing address, so that's something to keep in mind for families looking at locations. The building itself feels home-like and quiet, with semi-private suites for different levels of care, assisted living apartments and suites, dedicated memory care areas, and spots for short-term rehab stays if someone needs extra help after surgery or a hospital visit. For people with Alzheimer's or dementia, New Harmony Care Center has special staff, memory-focused programs, and secure units designed just for their needs, and there's always staff on hand around the clock, doing things like helping with medication, personal care, meals, and support through the day and night.

The community offers meal service, housekeeping, linen services, and maintenance-free living, so residents don't have to worry about daily chores, plus there's transportation for doctor visits, plenty of social and fitness activities including walking paths, a chapel, a fireside lounge, a barbershop and salon, and private dining options for special occasions. Amenities focus on comfort, making the suites furnished and equipped with cable TV, phone, and wifi, and the place also has things like a fitness center, spa services, scheduled activities, and programs intended to keep everyone engaged. They provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies on site for people who need extra support, and full skilled nursing and wound care services for those who need medical attention. Residents who just want independent living can enjoy a busy social calendar and get help with things like meals or medications if they want, but those who need more help get extra support with dressing, bathing, transfers, and care coordination. The grounds have outdoor spaces and walking areas, and the whole community aims for a neighborhood feel, so new residents can settle in and feel like part of the group, whether they're there for a short stay or planning to age in place for years to come. There's also respite care if a family needs somewhere safe for a loved one to stay for a few days or weeks. New Harmony Care Center focuses on individualized care plans, keeping people as independent as possible but stepping in with the right amount of help when it's needed, all within a steady, supportive, and neighborly environment.
