    Lovely community but care caveats

I live in a light-filled one-bedroom corner apartment with big windows and a balcony; the building, beautiful chapel, and on-site restaurant are lovely. The staff are friendly and caring, the chef-prepared food is excellent, and there's a busy activities calendar plus weekly non-denominational/Catholic-friendly services. The community is clean, quiet, and feels safe, but it is on the expensive side. I have seen recurring staffing shortages, poor communication, and occasional lapses in follow-through (especially around escalating care/memory care), so clarify care expectations and contracts up front. Overall I'm happy here and would recommend it with those caveats.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is mixed but leans positive with notable and recurring areas of concern. Many reviewers praise the physical environment, dining, activities, and the social community. The facility is repeatedly described as beautiful, new, light-filled, and clean. Commonly-cited amenities include a large chapel, a theater with a big screen, an inviting lobby and dining area, outdoor patios, a bar area, library and puzzle rooms, and fitness and physical therapy offerings. Residents and families frequently highlight chef-prepared meals and an on-site restaurant, and many describe the community as welcoming, family-like, and socially active with an extensive activities calendar.

Staff and care quality are where the reviews diverge most sharply. A substantial number of reviewers characterize staff as friendly, caring, and helpful; several families and residents commend proactive communication from housing and nursing directors and say individual care needs are met attentively. At the same time, there are several consistent, serious criticisms: reports of staffing shortages (especially during meals), poor staff training, inconsistent accountability, and what some reviewers call alarming lapses in care. Multiple reviewers claim that aging-in-place or memory-care promises were not honored, that assessments of care needs were inadequate, and that escalating needs were not managed properly. A small but loud group of reviews accuse staff of poor communication, misinformation, and even dishonesty or blaming residents when errors occur. These negative accounts create a polarized picture of care quality that potential residents should note.

Management and communication show similarly mixed signals. Several reviews explicitly praise the facility for clear, proactive communication and applaud the responsiveness of directors and certain staff members. Conversely, other reviews describe the community as disorganized, poorly run, and prone to misinformation—some prospective residents said they were repeatedly misinformed during the sign-up process. These discrepancies suggest variability in managerial performance or inconsistent operational execution across different teams or shifts. Financially, some reviewers feel pricing is reasonable and comparable to other independent living options, while others find it expensive and report poor value when promised services or higher levels of care are not delivered.

Amenities, activities, and worship life are consistent strengths across the reviews. The activity calendar is robust — with bingo, movies, cards, dice games, puzzle groups, music and singalongs, style shows, and happy hours commonly available — and many reviewers emphasize the social benefits of those offerings. The chapel and spiritual programming are highlighted repeatedly; the community is described as Catholic-friendly (including the presence of nuns) while also offering non-denominational services, although a few reviewers noted that the religious affiliation may be less appealing depending on personal preferences. Physical therapy, exercise classes, and security are additional positives cited by multiple reviewers.

Patterns and recommendations: the dominant pattern is one of a high-quality, attractive independent living community that delivers excellent amenities and social life for many residents, paired with notable operational risks around staffing, communication, and higher-acuity care. The most frequent and serious concerns concern understaffing during meals, inconsistent follow-through on care commitments (especially for aging-in-place and memory care), and instances of poor communication or misinformation. These issues are significant because they affect both day-to-day quality of life and safety/trust when residents’ care needs escalate.

For prospective residents or family members: visit and tour (several reviewers praised tours), speak with current residents about both daily life and recent incidents, and ask pointed questions about staffing levels, staff training, and how the facility manages escalation of care and memory-care transitions. Get written specifics on aging-in-place policies, assessment frequency, staffing ratios at peak times (mealtimes, med passes, evenings), and what accountability mechanisms are in place for errors or care lapses. Verify cleaning schedules and ask how management addresses reported problems, and consider requesting introductions to the housing and nursing directors. Overall, Benedictine Living Community–Shakopee Windermere Way appears to offer an attractive environment with strong social, spiritual, and dining programs that suit many residents very well, but prospective residents should conduct careful, documented due diligence regarding staffing, care transitions, and communication practices before committing.

    About Benedictine

Benedictine Living Community- Shakopee Windermere Way is managed by Benedictine.

Benedictine, established in 1985 by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery in Duluth, Minnesota, has grown into one of the largest Catholic senior living organizations in the United States, operating over 35 communities across Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri. With annual revenues reaching billion, approximately 5,000 employees, and over million of senior living assets under management, this faith-based nonprofit organization has experienced significant expansion from a single skilled nursing facility to a multi-state healthcare network through strategic acquisitions, partnerships, sponsorship transitions, and joint ventures.

Under the leadership of President and CEO Jerry Carley, who joined in 2018 bringing over 35 years of senior care experience, Benedictine has maintained its position as an industry leader while preserving its Catholic heritage and mission-driven focus. Carley's leadership has earned significant recognition, including being named to The Minnesota 500 as one of the state's most powerful executives (2018-2020) and designation as one of Minnesota's Most Influential Health Care Leaders by Minnesota Physician Magazine in 2020. His extensive background includes previous roles as president and CEO of CSJ Initiatives and service on LeadingAge Minnesota's board of directors, where he serves as Chair.

Benedictine's innovative memory care program exemplifies their commitment to specialized care through two distinct neighborhoods: Tabitha, named after Sister Tabitha who was the first woman to head a hospital setting, which serves residents with mild to moderate memory loss, and Pauline, honoring Sister Pauline who devoted her life to dementia care, providing specialized support for those with moderate to advanced dementia. These research-based programs employ best practices in dementia care, offering engaging activities, personalized care plans, and family integration support. The organization's comprehensive service continuum extends to Adult Day Programs in Duluth and Winona, providing daytime respite care with trained memory care staff, while facilities like Benedictine Minneapolis specialize in complex medical care including tracheostomy and ventilator support.

The organization's care philosophy centers on nurturing mind, body, and spirit, rooted in Benedictine values of Hospitality, Stewardship, Respect, and Justice. This holistic approach emphasizes listening with the "ear of the heart," creating welcoming environments where unique needs are respected and each person's spirituality is honored. Through comprehensive rehabilitation services, spiritual care programs led by Director of Spiritual Care Rev. J. Scott Cartwright, and purposeful recreation incorporating art, music therapy, and movement, Benedictine continues the healthcare ministry begun by the Benedictine Sisters over a century ago. Recent strategic decisions, including the 2024 transition of Benedictine Living Community-Wausau to The Ensign Group, demonstrate the organization's commitment to ensuring sustainable, high-quality care while adapting to evolving market dynamics and maintaining their mission of empowering older adults to live to their highest potential.
