    Helpful staff, affordable co-op apartments

I live here and appreciate the helpful, pleasant staff and the good-sized, economical co-op apartments - in-unit washer/dryer, customizable carpeting/color, and rentable community/dining/guest rooms are great. The dining area is clean and management is responsive, but decor can be dated and activities are mostly low-key (cards/games) with limited fitness/assisted services. Overall, it's a wonderful, practical over-55 living option.

    Summary review

Overall impression Cardinal Pointe of Maplewood is consistently described as a practical, community-oriented independent living option for adults 55 and older. Reviews emphasize that it is strictly independent living — there is no assisted living or on-site care — which makes it appropriate for relatively healthy, self-sufficient seniors. The tone across reviews is generally positive about value and livability: apartments are considered a good size, economical, and adequate for most residents’ needs. Multiple reviewers were impressed with customization options (carpeting and color choices) and in-unit conveniences such as washers and dryers.

Care quality and staffing Because the property is independent living only, there is no medical or assisted-care staffing to evaluate. Where staff are mentioned, descriptions are favorable: staff are called pleasant and helpful. A new property manager was noted by at least one reviewer, which may indicate recent or ongoing adjustments in leadership and operations. The co-op/committee governance structure and active resident involvement come through strongly; this can be a pro for people who want a say in community life, but it also means some operational decisions may be handled by volunteer committees rather than a centralized professional management team.

Facilities and physical condition Facilities get mixed but largely favorable notes. Positive amenities include an on-site community room, a rentable dining room for events, a guest room for visitors, and attractive grounds. Some reviews mention an exercise room and a woodworking shop, but this is an area of inconsistency: at least one summary explicitly states there is no physical fitness area while another reports an exercise room and an active social group. The property was refurbished in 2020, suggesting some recent investment, yet several reviewers still describe dated colors, wallpaper, and areas that could use renovation. Overall the facility is characterized as adequate and economical rather than luxurious or top-of-the-line.

Dining A clear pattern is that Cardinal Pointe does not provide food service; it is not a meal-plan community. The dining area itself is reported to be clean, and the dining room can be rented for events, but prospective residents should not expect on-site dining or meal preparation services. This aligns with the independent-living model and the self-directed lifestyle many residents appear to prefer.

Activities and social life Activity levels and programming appear variable. Multiple reviews mention limited formal activities — often smaller, resident-led gatherings, card and game groups, and social meetings — and emphasize self-directed plans. Conversely, other reviewers note an active social group and robust resident engagement. This mixed picture suggests the community can be very social for people who take initiative, but may lack more structured programming, fitness classes, or professionally led activities that some seniors seek.

Management, governance, and finances The co-op status and committee-run nature of the community are recurrent themes. Several reviewers appreciate the funding arrangements and describe the financial picture as favorable and economical. However, committee governance can produce variability in services, amenities, and the pace of renovations; prospective residents should understand that changes and improvements may be driven by resident committees and funding cycles rather than a single management company.

Notable patterns and recommendations There are a few recurring contrasts that deserve attention: some reviewers report an exercise room while others say there is no fitness area; some praise active social groups while others describe limited activities. These inconsistencies suggest either changes over time (perhaps tied to the 2020 refurbishment or recent management changes) or differences in personal expectations and involvement. The community is repeatedly described as a wonderful living option for people who want an affordable, independent, engaged lifestyle and who are willing to participate in resident-led activities and governance.

In summary, Cardinal Pointe of Maplewood is best suited for independent, active, budget-conscious seniors who value apartment customization, community involvement, and modest but functional amenities. It is not appropriate for those needing assisted living, regular meals, or extensive professionally led programming. Before deciding, prospective residents should verify current amenities (especially fitness facilities and activity schedules), ask about recent renovation plans, and consider visiting during several events to gauge the social atmosphere and management style driven by the co-op/committee structure.

    About Cardinal Pointe of Maplewood

Cardinal Pointe of Maplewood is a cooperative senior housing community for adults aged 55 and older, located at 3003 Hazelwood Street in Maplewood, Minnesota, and it's a place where people can choose from 1-, 2-, or 3-bedroom units, with names like Hummingbird, Bluebird, Robin, Dove, Oriole, Meadowlark, Finch, Sandpiper, and Wren. The building has 108 units on three floors, with each unit offering one, one and a half, or two bathrooms, and some units are pretty spacious with sizes from about 792 to 1,402 square feet, and there are share prices that are in the range of $53,075 to $96,000 depending on the unit you pick, plus monthly fees go from $806 up to $1,420. You'll find all sorts of common spaces, like a community room for gatherings, a craft room for creative work, an exercise room, a game room, a woodworking shop, a library, and heated underground parking, and they even keep a guest room for visitors, so people don't have to worry too much about having friends or family over when they need to. There are also laundry facilities available if you call for them, and every resident can enjoy the heated car wash in the garage if they need it. They don't allow pets, so someone who needs an animal companion for comfort should keep that in mind before looking further.

People who live here can expect plenty of chances to join in with all sorts of activities, such as game nights, book clubs, and group outings, and the community does focus on keeping folks active, both physically and socially, so everyone has a chance to stay connected and feel at home. Being a co-op means there's a sense that folks have some ownership in the place as well as maintenance-free living, so nobody has to worry much about things like mowing lawns or fixing leaky pipes, and it seems community life is a high priority, with the staff having a reputation for kindness and looking out for both the residents and their families.

This facility is set up to help people in many different situations because you can find independent living, assisted living, memory care, short-term rehabilitation, long-term skilled nursing, home health care, adult day services, and even hospice care, so residents have support as their needs change, and the facility provides personal care services like help with dressing, bathing, grooming, toileting, and getting from place to place in the building. Therapies available here include physical, occupational, and speech therapy, plus there's wound care, pain management, and intravenous medication therapies for those who might need that, and there're in-home services available too, through things like Optage Home & Community Services, Hospice, Therapies, and Senior Dining Choices, so meals are chef-prepared and planned by nutritionists to make sure everyone stays healthy. When it comes to comfort, there're amenities set up to make life easier and more pleasant, so there's no need for folks to leave the building just to get basic needs taken care of, which does make a difference for people as they get older.

Many people, including families, seem to use the free consumer information service the facility runs, and there's a personal consultation process in place with a senior living advisor for those who want some help sorting through the choices about what living or care options might fit best. Cardinal Pointe of Maplewood holds a verified provider status and tends to get good ratings, around 8.5 out of 10, with reviews averaging 4.2 stars and people often mentioning the friendly and helpful atmosphere, so it seems like a place where staff and residents look out for each other and many find themselves happy with the choice. Guided tours happen regularly and can be scheduled ahead, giving people a chance to see the apartments and facilities for themselves. The place is popular for people who want an independent lifestyle but with the safety net of extra support when needed.
